To: To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. To: To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. apache2 + ddclient + ¿iptables?
-- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 As Florian Kulzer suggested, I purged network-manager, network-manager-kde, network-manager-openvpn, network-manager-vpnc and the packages they depend upon, but which are not dependencies of any other packages, a total of 12 packages in all. I then added auto wlan0 to file /etc/network/interfaces and then rebooted. The boot process still did not successfully activate the wireless connection. Syslog showx that it tried to by running DHCPDISCOVER on wlan0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 'n' several times and ultimately reported No DHCPOFFERS received. and No working leases in persistent database - sleeping. Activating a connection after failure to do so during boot-up, with auto wlan0 still in /etc/network/interfaces is revealing. First I discovered that running ifup wlan0 returned ifup: interface wlan0 already configured. So, ifupdown thinks the connection is activated even though it is not. Apparently the developers are aware that a false configuration reading is possible, because in directory /usr/share/doc/ifupdown/contrib are two shell script files and a perl script file -- all dating from 2006 -- to determine whether the interfaces are really up. One of these shell scripts, ensureifup, does not work because it is probably outdated. It apparently needs file /usr/local/sbin/ifstate which does not exist in the laptop. The other two, ifstate and ifstate-check report that all interfaces are activated or up, when in fact only lo is up; eth0 and wlan0 are not. So, to activate the wireless connection when the boot process tried to do so but failed because auto wlan was in file /etc/network/interfaces, first I have to run ifdown wlan0. Doing so has the effect of deleting the PID file. If however I next run ifup wlan0 wireless still is not activated. Ifup nevertheless thinks it is, as running the command again returns ifup: interface wlan0 already configured. After considerable experimentation I discovered that to activate the connection in this situation I have first to run ifdown wlan0. Next, in order to confirm the existence of the cell I want to connect to, I have to run iwlist wlan0 scan. Finally, running ifup wlan0 only then will activate the connection. Booting without line auto wlan0 in file /etc/network/interfaces obviates the cumbersome procedure just described. The interface will be enacted simply by running ifup wlan0 (as root of course, like all the other commands mentioned herein) after the boot process is finished. All the foregoing raises the three questions, if not more. 1. Why cannot the wlan0 be activated on boot? 2. Why does command ifup report that the specified interface is already configured when it may not be? It appears that it will say the interface is already configured if by finding the PID file, rather than actually testing the connection. 3. Why, to activate an interface after an unsuccessful attempt, do I need to do what I have described above? Surely ifup should be able to tell whether an interface is *really* connected, and act accordingly: if *really* connected, say so; if not, activate the interface and so report. I am inclined to think that these are bugs in the ifupdown application, rather than problems specific to my computer. Catalyst on new install
Hello, I'm trying to install Catalyst on my newly installed computer, however the aticonfig --initial doesn't update my xorg.conf properly. I'm new to ATI (I've used the Nvidia prop. driver for years and installed it dozens of times) and I need some help on this. I tried to find some help on the forums here and there, but I can't seem to find a satisfactory solution. Here's the problem: I installed Lenny 64-bit on my computer, debconf generates the following xorg.conf: [snip] Section InputDevice IdentifierGeneric Keyboard Driverkbd OptionXkbRulesxorg OptionXkbModelpc104 OptionXkbLayoutus EndSection Section InputDevice IdentifierConfigured Mouse Drivermouse EndSection Section Device IdentifierConfigured Video Device EndSection Section Monitor IdentifierConfigured Monitor EndSection Section Screen IdentifierDefault Screen MonitorConfigured Monitor EndSection It seems to use the vesa driver, and this wouldn't be a problem if my screen resolution was correct (1680x1050 vs. 1400x1050 which vesa gives me). After installing Catalyst and running aticonfig --initial this xorg.conf is generated: [snip] Section ServerLayout Identifier aticonfig Layout Screen 0 aticonfig-Screen[0]-0 0 0 EndSection Section Files EndSection Section Module EndSection Section InputDevice Identifier Generic Keyboard Driver kbd OptionXkbRules xorg OptionXkbModel pc104 OptionXkbLayout us EndSection Section InputDevice Identifier Configured Mouse Driver mouse EndSection Section Monitor Identifier Configured Monitor EndSection Section Monitor Identifier aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0 OptionVendorName ATI Proprietary Driver OptionModelName Generic Autodetecting Monitor OptionDPMS true EndSection Section Device Identifier Configured Video Device EndSection Section Device Identifier aticonfig-Device[0]-0 Driver fglrx BusID PCI:1:0:0 EndSection Section Screen Identifier Default Screen MonitorConfigured Monitor EndSection Section Screen Identifier aticonfig-Screen[0]-0 Device aticonfig-Device[0]-0 Monitoraticonfig-Monitor[0]-0 DefaultDepth 24 SubSection Display Viewport 0 0 Depth 24 EndSubSection EndSection After a restart of X my screen goes blank but the backlight of my LCD is on, the computer becomes highly irresponsive but doesn't seem to hang completely. Need help installing ndiswrapper
I am installing ndiswrapper and can't get it to complete properly. In the INSTALL it states: You need a recent kernel, at least 2.6.16, with header files for the kernel. Make sure there is a link to the kernel source from the modules directory. The command ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build should have at least 'include' directory and '.config' file. I have kernel 2.6.26 and I have installed both the kernel headers and the kernel source but I still don't have the build directory and the required directory file. How do I get these setup? TIA!! Odd Backspace behavior in vim
Hello people, yes, I've done my Google homework. Yes, everybody seems to solve this problem using set backspace=eol, start, indent and set fixdel. However, it doesn't work in xterms on this machine: Whenever I hit backspace, the character to the right of the current cursor position gets deleted. Of course this is something one could get used to, but I'm using vim not only in xterms but also in the text console and in cygwin on another machine, and in all of these, backspace deletes to the left. Needless to say that it works fine in all other apps as well, and, most puzzling, even in vim's very own command-line editor. Just not in the text window. I don't get it. I really don't. BTW, it also worked fine before I stopped using screen. I stopped using screen because I didn't really feel I needed it, and because the Xterm mouse support in vim, which I like, wasn't supported. AFAIK, SOHO routers / APs / switches are generally configurable via a web interface, which will work with any platform. Note, though, that they often recommend, or even require, Javascript, which can make using a TUI browser such as links difficult or impossible. Another reason to use a firmware other than the default that the SOHO router ships with. Agreed, but see above. UFS/UFS2: I see the ufsutils and libufs2 packages and there is also an ufs kernel module, so I assume there is at least some level of support, but they are only present in unstable, so I don't know if they'll be part of the next release. IPv6: should be supported out of the box firewall: Debian GNU/Linux uses the built-in capabilities of the kernel (netfilter). Iptables is used for configuring it, but many prefer to use some kind of wrapper (ex. shorewall). NFS: the nfs-kernel-server package is version 1.0.10 in etch and lenny will probably ship with 1.1.2. The version in lenny claims to support NFSv3 and NFSv4. The version in etch doesn't have this information in the package description, I would try the README.Debian file. AC97 sound chip: Linux has decent support for a lot of chips, but it's impossible to tell without chipset manufacturer/brand/version and so. In the end the best way to test would be to boot with a Debian Live image. I am coming the the understanding that each of the packages that comprises a debian release is documented independently.
