Τουλάχιστον τα βασικά DEs (Gnome/KDE/XFCE) παίζουν out of the box στο Debian. Τουλάχιστον τα βασικά DEs (Gnome/KDE/XFCE) παίζουν out of the box στο Debian.

ώστε να μπορέσουμε να είμαστε οι πρωτοπόροι ιδρυτές και ambassadors της; Σας ευχαριστώ πολύ όλους εκ των προτέρων, Λεωνίδας - Leonidas Boukouvalas, Debian User, Debian Translator, Proud Member of the Ano Panagia's Debian Users' Team

duvida samba-3.5.6 win7
Just now I found that iceweasle can show the password I saved. very bad, hope she didn't realize it and read my password. I don't know how to do in this situations. Thanks for any advice. A bit of history as to why I say this has been a nightmare is because the basic problem has been a lack of straight-forward documentation, but that could be my inability to find it To be honest it's an absolute nightmare. I forgot until I saw your reply that I've also needed to perform the following tweaks when using libvirt in a true client/server model: EITHER 1. Carry the libvirt/qemu protocol across an ssh tunnel to the server. This requires you to have a login account on the server 2. Add the user account from #1 to the libvirt group on the server 3. In the client GUI, create a connection to nelson@server (or whatever) rather than just to server OR 4. Edit /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf and /etc/libvirt/libvirtd.conf on the server to allow non-local connections to the daemon. Ideally with authentication (but this isn't essential if you are on a controlled and/or restricted network). I've never found SASL an enjoyable experience, so I would recommend that you go for the first option. However, you have have a policy dictating otherwise. The first error I got was Failed to connect socket to '/var/run/libvirt/libvirt-sock': No such file or directory I think this may be a consequence of omitting #2 So, I am now installing an OS on my VM. That leaves one final item, but this is really low on the priority list. How do I clean up after those failed initial attempts? The nasty but effective way is to shut down the libvirt daemon and delete the relevant xml files from /etc/libvirtd/qemu/. Chris Thank you Chris. This is good info, based on experience. Not sure if you saw my post saying I got it working, but not in the manner you describe. I will have to do more of this in near future, so I will give your method a try. I will try to put together a list of the steps for working methods and post it somewhere. I do have good notes on what I've done so far, and I have added your information to them. And thank you for the xml file location info. I figured it was something like that, since Virtual Box is similar, but wasn't sure where to find the files. Back to work. I mean, there are more GNOME/KDE users out there than XFCE/LXDE/Razor-QT and more users means well probed software. To make a DE as a default for a distribution without being tested intensively can give a bad impression to newcomers. but make it look like Gnome 2 (like Xubuntu does, or at least used to -- I haven't used it in a while). It feels very at home for Gnome 2 users, and I think it's important for Debian to provide some consistency to users from one release to the next. I realize the Gnome upstream has made this difficult recently... Which leads to another question: do you people seriously think there's any gain in promoting an old toolkit such as GTK+2 over GTK+3? Further to above, I did a file copy using K3B onto one of the BD-RE discs that won't mount. K3B appeared to recognize that there was a udf file system on the disc. After it finished, it automounted as /media/cdrom0 with fs type iso9660. However, I could also mount it as /media/dvd. Switching to root, I was also able to mount it using mount -t udf /dev/sr0 /media/dvd Running mount shows that it is mounted as a udf file system. However, I can't mount it -rw. The format dialog has a pulldown for the media which shows Complete Data BD-RE. It wouldn't do a format - said it didn't need to do one - unless I do a force, which I decided against. I was able to burn a data project, after which the BluRay disc automounts as /media/cdrom0 again. The mount command (no options) shows it as: /dev/sr0 on /media/cdrom0 type iso9660 (ro,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime) I can also mount it as /media/dvd, where the mount command shows it mounted as: /dev/sr0 on /media/dvd type udf (ro,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,utf8) Trying to format the disk using dvd+rw-format is now giving me: root@transponder:/home/garydale# dvd+rw-format -force=full /dev/sr0 * BD/DVD±RW/-RAM format utility by ap...@fy.chalmers.se, version 7.1. * 24.2GB BD media detected. * formatting .:-[ FORMAT UNIT failed with SK=5h/INVALID FIELD IN PARAMETER LIST]: Input/output error I get the same if I try to -blank or -format as well. How to add self-compiled kernel module in debian installation
Hi, I have a new LSI MegaRAID card which is not recognized by the Debian 6.0 squeeze installer so I thought I would modify the initrd.gz installation image which gets loaded at PXE boot in order to include my self-compiled latest version of that module (megaraid_sas.ko). If the installer created one single partition, you may also need rescue set prefix=($root)/boot/grub rescue insmod normal rescue normal And from there the regular grub commands (linux, initrd) should work. There may also be a command to start the menu from there (insmod gfxmenu?). But also run: cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec Codec: Conexant ID 2bfa Codec: SigmaTel STAC9200 $ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* |grep -i mic Pin Default 0x04a11020: [Jack] Mic at Ext Right Probably, says about connector only? So it seems. Because you seem to have two different codecs listed. May one for modem, another - sound card? Yes, that makes sense. Conexant is a well-known manufacturer for embedded modem chipsets. Mmm... Now run, juts to be sure: arecord -l List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 Good. I wanted to verify the STAC92xx chipset was selected as the default recording chipset instead the other. Okay, okay... let's try then to restore the honour of your oldie laptop. Actually, I never saw it. :o) - Only on desktops - w/o any problems. Shhh! Be quiet, your netbook can be listening and won't like seeing you're in doubt about it :-) Wait. I must have missed this line from your very first post, but this has to be your mic input (this is what I also get from my netbook and I can from the mixer applet the mic is there) :-? Hmm. On desktops I see exactly word microphone or mic - do not remember correctly. Then alsa mixer has appropriate handle w/ which I can change its gain. - Here, on laptop, I miss all this. Yes, I also see a Mic device in desktops but not in my netbook (and you know what? My netbook also has a STAC92xx chipset, I didn't notice until now :-P). I mean, this can be normal and not an error per se. Of course, despite not being displayed, the microphone has to be visible/ controllable from the sound applet and has work :-) And now I realized I share the same chipset as yours and we also share the same kernel version, I can run more tests from my side. Run dmesg | grep -i mic, I can see a line referencing the microphone device, check if you also have it. How are you testing your microphone? Eventually, knocking on microphone gives no any sound in speakers. Whereas on desktops - it does. The microphone is working - tested on desktops. Okay, have you checked for the input (mic) volume levels? What kind sound controller are you using (gnome/kde volume applet...)? Also, test with the usual command line utility to test the mic: arecord -d 10 /tmp/mic.wav The above will record from your mic input for 10 seconds and save the sample result at /tpm/mic.wav which you will be able to play with: aplay /tmp/mic.wav Well, you can also try with a different one as this won't hurt: options snd-hda-intel model=ref And so on... (remember to reboot or restart alsa service after editing the file to changes take effect) Done, restarted w/ # /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart correct? - But nothing. Mmm... maybe this indicates that specifying a model by hand is not needed and the problem is elsewhere :-? Indeed yes, I managed to compile the megaraid_sas module by using an older version of it (looks like the latest source code from LSI has an issue with Debian). I see you follow very well what happens on this mailing list :) Thanks for your suggestion of the USB key, unfortunately that's exactly what I would like to avoid as I want to setup a fully automated installation using Debian's preseed so going to the server and add a USB key is not really an option. Re: BD-RE mount problem
Hi, [i am subscribed to cdwr...@other.debian.org, not to debian-user] I tried a new disc again, and this time formatted it through K3B instead of using dvd+rw-format directly. I don't know what K3B does as formatting, but dvd+rw-format does only a hardware level formatting. It does not create a filesystem. Further to above, I did a file copy using K3B onto one of the BD-RE discs that won't mount. K3B appeared to recognize that there was a udf file system on the disc. I would rather expect that it created one around the files which you told it to copy. After it finished, it automounted as /media/cdrom0 with fs type iso9660. So it is probably an ISO 9660/UDF hybrid filesystem created by mkisofs (which was started under the control of K3B). However, I can't mount it -rw. It insists that the file system is read-only. This is not the variant of UDf which you want. You want a read-write filesystem. root@transponder:/home/garydale# mkudffs /dev/sr0 Error opening device: Read-only file system This should have worked. Do you have no w-permission to /dev/sr0 ? I just exercised with success: mkudffs /dev/sr1 mount /dev/sr1 /mnt cp /some/dir /mnt umount /mnt Hardware: INQUIRY:[HL-DT-ST][BD-RE GGW-H20L ][YL03] Mounted Media: 43h, BD-RE Media ID: VERBAT/IM0 (Not that i ever would do that for backup. The umount time alone gives me creeps. No chance to get full write speed. Arrrgh !!! I use my own ISO 9660 multi-session tool xorriso for backups.) root@transponder:/home/garydale# dvd+rw-format -force=full /dev/sr0 * BD/DVD±RW/-RAM format utility by ap...@fy.chalmers.se, version 7.1. * 24.2GB BD media detected. * formatting .:-[ FORMAT UNIT failed with SK=5h/INVALID FIELD IN PARAMETER LIST]: Input/output error It would be interesting to see what paramaters the program sent with the FORMAT UNIT command. According to the source code it would be Format Type 0x30 with sub-type 2. This should not cause an error. Here's the dvd+rw-mediainfo: root@transponder:/home/garydale# dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/sr0 READ FORMAT CAPACITIES: formatted: 11826176*2048=24220008448 Well, it is already formatted. That should suffice for a whole media life. The problem is to get mkudffs to work. Maybe it is reluctant to overwrite a valid ISO 9660 or UDF on the medium ? Try to overwrite it by brute force umount /dev/sr0 dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sr0 bs=2048 count=1024 mkudffs /dev/sr0 If 1024 blocks of 0s is not enough, then try to flood the whole medium dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sr0 bs=2048 count=11826176 Any ideas anyone? You could use sequential burn programs like growisofs or xorriso. Both can add files to ISO 9660 filesystems on BD-RE. Those filesystems are mountable read-only. If you canafford to have the medium only readable on Linux, then you could try to format it by mkfs -t ext2. But that might reduce the lifetime of your BD-RE by overwriting the same blocks frequently. Actually your mkudffs approach should just work (with all its advantages and drawbacks towards ISO 9660 sessions.) My numbers seem a little suspect there. Is a graphical session REALLY used by such a small majority of the userbase? You seem to be suggesting that xfce4-session and gnome-session are the only desktop environments - I, for example, use pekwm at the moment (and openbox before that) so will not be in either that 20% (assuming no overlap, which is probably wrong). Looking at xserver-xorg[0], the most popular X server at the moment, it is installed on 52% of systems partaking in the popularity contest. I suspect this is a reasonable reflection on the number of graphical installs in popcon as a lot of production headless servers will probably not be reporting stats (whereas my headless boxes at home, which do not have an X server installed, do). Because of this I expect the real number of graphical desktop (compared to non-desktop installs) is less than 52%. OK. Perhaps I was a little lax in my language there. xserver-xorg-core is probably the more accurate package for uses graphics. xserver-xorg is a meta package which brings in all the drivers. But if you want a slimmer system, you'd probably remove them. You'd still use xserver-xorg-core, though. 37% of users use that regularly. A little less than twice the above numbers. So the remaining 17% (xserver-xorg-core minus gnome-session minus xfce4-session) of users use another session manager (such as kde) or no session manager at all. Still, while this is a big change, it seems like it will affect only a minority of users. What are the percentages of users who download a CD iso vs. a DVD? And compare that to the number of network installs? That is, surely everyone who wants GNOME has a DVD drive? Is this just a tempest in a teapot? Re: [OT] Will upcoming Debian 8 release default to XFCE for the CD media?

But one could expect the tasksel team asks about this change to the rest of the involved teams (e.g., boot/cd and the others in charge of the DE packages such as GNOME/KDE/XFCE/LXDE...), right? I don't mean to sound rude but this seems to be a rather quick decision with little debate over it. You've already provided a major reference for the discussion which has taken place on debian-devel. It included controversy (altering the status quo always does) but it really does come down to size. The first CD is not big enough to hold GNOME but I assume it will be on the first DVD. So maybe the decision was quickly made but it didn't come from nowhere. Well, the idea came from one mind, that's for sure :-) yet still there are many questions floating in the air and not just because of the decision itself but (warning, rant starts here): 1/ The time of the change (when freeze is already in place) 2/ The nature of the change (the installer is a key piece of any OS and it has to be well tested and yes, I run the installer from time to time in a VM to see if there's something missing or that fails) 3/ No feedback (there can be another alternatives to XFCE) You may sympathise with this response: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2012/08/msg00066.html He. Yes, that's a nice one coming from Christian :-) The way the artwork for Wheezy was chosen also had its critics. See the June archive for debian-desktop. The work is done by people who step forward and surveys are not necessarily going to make that happen. Choosing the background, banner colours et al and defaulting a DE from the installer are not quite the same, I'd say :-) Greetings, -- Camaleón -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: BD-RE mount problem
On 09/08/12 12:08 PM, Thomas Schmitt wrote: Hi, [i am subscribed to cdwr...@other.debian.org, not to debian-user] I tried a new disc again, and this time formatted it through K3B instead of using dvd+rw-format directly. Arrrgh !!! I use my own ISO 9660 multi-session tool xorriso for backups.) Yes, I have read-write permissions. I tried xorriso to fix the disc as well but it also fails. root@transponder:/home/garydale# dvd+rw-format -force=full /dev/sr0 * BD/DVD±RW/-RAM format utility byap...@fy.chalmers.se, version 7.1. I've seen mention of this in some of my google searches on the various messages I've been getting. Can you elaborate on how to change the format type from the command line? Here's the dvd+rw-mediainfo: root@transponder:/home/garydale# dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/sr0 READ FORMAT CAPACITIES: formatted: 11826176*2048=24220008448 Well, it is already formatted. That should suffice for a whole media life. The problem is to get mkudffs to work. Maybe it is reluctant to overwrite a valid ISO 9660 or UDF on the medium ? Try to overwrite it by brute force umount /dev/sr0 dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sr0 bs=2048 count=1024 mkudffs /dev/sr0 If 1024 blocks of 0s is not enough, then try to flood the whole medium dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sr0 bs=2048 count=11826176 Already tried that. dd complains: dd: opening `/dev/sr0': Read-only file system Any ideas anyone? You could use sequential burn programs like growisofs or xorriso. Both can add files to ISO 9660 filesystems on BD-RE. Those filesystems are mountable read-only. If you canafford to have the medium only readable on Linux, then you could try to format it by mkfs -t ext2. But that might reduce the lifetime of your BD-RE by overwriting the same blocks frequently. Actually your mkudffs approach should just work (with all its advantages and drawbacks towards ISO 9660 sessions.) I use udf so I can access the files directly. I have found it useful to do a cmp between the files on the HD and the BD-RE to ensure they copied correctly. If the cmp fails, I rsync the bad file (these are .tar.lzma archives that are often quite large). I try this 3 times before reporting a backup error. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
