added second /dev/md1 to system by hand into /etc/fstab and system won't boot cause udev doesnt create device /dev/md1

2012-10-20 Thread Mitchell Laks
Dear Gurus,

I have copied over my home directory to a new drive which is a raid 1 software
raid.
I added the corresponding correct information to /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf.

ARRAY /dev/md1 level=raid1 num-devices=1
UUID=69547109-c527-6986-fab9-5ff707241177

and i replaced the old drive entry in /etc/fstab with the new information

/dev/md1 /home ext3 defaults 0 2

however the boot from grub fails and drops me into a partial state because the
device

/dev/md1

is not existent.

I can manually create

mknod /dev/md1 b 9 1
and then
mdadm -A /dev/md1

and then mount it

but this is clearly wrong.

What do I do to enable my system to boot normally with this new configuration??

ie what tells the boot process to create /dev/md1 and assemble the raid?

thanks
Mitchell

Hi Wanderer,

Did you ever find a solution to this? I'm experiencing the exact same
problem when trying to clone a system into a fresh wheezy
installation. I've Googled around and it seems like we're the only two
people on the planet with this problem.

Let me know if you've found anything interesting. Otherwise I think
I'll open a bug report with dpkg.

Cheers,

Eric

Here is what appears to have changed since my last night's upgrade:

[UPGRADE] ffmpeg:amd64 7:0.11.1-dmo5 -> 7:1.0-dmo1
[UPGRADE] gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg:amd64 0.10.13-5 -> 1:0.10.13-dmo1
[UPGRADE] libxine2-ffmpeg:amd64 1.2.2-4 -> 1:1.2.2-dmo3
[UPGRADE] libavcodec54:amd64 7:0.11.1-dmo5 -> 7:1.0-dmo1
[UPGRADE] libavdevice54:amd64 7:0.11.1-dmo5 -> 7:1.0-dmo1

[UPGRADE] libavutil51:amd64 7:0.11.1-dmo5 -> 7:1.0-dmo1

Could this have broken motion?

motion: problem finding codec

2012-10-20 Thread H.S.
Hello,

Today out of the blue, the 'motion' (ver 3.2.12-3.2) application on my
Debian Testing (kernel 3.2.0-3-amd64) box has stopped working. It
appears as if it cannot find the necessary av codec.

It doesn't matter what video output format I choose (avi, flv, swf,
etc.), or if I run it with "sudo motion", the error is the same:
avcodec_open - could not open codec: Invalid argument
[1] ffopen_open error creating (new) file
[/usr/local/motionvideo/01-20121020213958.swf]: Invalid argument

Can somebody suggest how to troubleshoot this one?

So it really does work to use the driver from NVIDIAs website? What

You need to be able to build kernel modules, e.g. m-a, build-essential,
the version of gcc that matches the version used to compile the kernel,
kernel headers, dkms, that sort of thing, etc. The nvidia blob for
64-bit comes with a 32-bit compatibility library, and the installer will
ask you if you want to install those as well (it's optional). You have
to recompile the kernel modules every time the kernel is updated, if
that changes the ABI, which is not unusual at all. (This is true of the
Non-free glx package as well.)

Yes, you can use "vmware converter", it's a free download (need to
register though) and then use the converted system in vmware products,
or virtualbox, or even kvm (be careful to pick the right image format,
one that can be converted later). I had good results with windows 7 and
vmware converter 4, not so much with the newer 5 edition. Be aware that
to run windows in a virtualized environment you need to re-activate your
copy of windows, whatever that implies (I am not familiar with Microsoft
formalities).

Hi John,

Yes there is. Now, it will depend on what virtualization platform you want
to bring it to. If you want, for example, to use VMWare, they've got it.

Either way, google for P2V (physical to virtual) for your virtualization
(vmware, virtualbox, xen, etc).

Cheers!

I'd love to know. One system on our local net needs windows in order to
talk to the ISP (Telmex): they will only talk to you if you have windows
installed. Although they yet have to solve anything in 3 years with
several week-long outages.

Re: OT: man in the middle attack ?

2012-10-20 Thread Dr Beco
The freedom to offend? I'm sorry, but there is something wrong here.

I think someone is misunderstanding netiquette (or etiquette) and good
manners with freedom/censorship by law enforcement.

A good mannered people is not forbidden to curse. He freely chooses
not to. Well, in some cultures, you are really forbidden to curse. In
others, they allow you to do so only in certain places (like a
football stadium, for instance).

In a live person contact, a group can choose not to hang out with a
guy that is disturbing. That is the freedom to be with people you
like, people that contribute to society, that you can develop a
friendship.

In an internet group, it's not the group that moves around to hang out
somewhere else. It's the disturbing guy that is supposed to fit or go
away.

If the majority of the group is for people who curse, mistreat
persons, and alike, Miss Manners will leave. But usually, a big group
that has a very strong philosophy of sharing and contributing to
society will have a majority of good mannered people. This is a
comforting thought, isn't it? After all, we all (or at least the great
majority I strongly believe), do not want Miss Manners to leave. We
like her. ;)

Beco.

I wouldn't bother buying a complete system. I built my own. This
motherboard:

It's perfect and you are in control. No bother with windows.

Those sites are interesting but why not go straight to the heart of the
matter. Get at 64-bit netinst. Run it. Shrink the Windows partition if
necessary. Or get rid of Windows. Install Debian. Couldn't be easier.

You are in control with this. No need to search for websites with
64-bit versions of some software which is intended for someone actually
having Windows and wanting to install Debian from it without putting any
effort into it.

Consider building your computer from components. For one thing, you can
pick what goes into it, such as getting a motherboard that is known to
run Debian (or whatever flavor) well, and customize to your heart's
content. Second, You can avoid that pesky Windows entirely. And third,
you will be able to build a better machine than you can buy.

As far as installing a dist from scratch, the installers are pretty good
these days, and you should be able to do it easily from a DVD. Get the
amd64 ISO for Wheezy and burn it to a disc. Boot the disc, AND bOB'S
YOUR UNCLE.

cannot detect USB3 external hard disk, uas the problem

2012-10-20 Thread H.S.
Hello.

I have a Hitach Touro USB3 external hard disk. When I connected it to a
USB port (the one on the front of the case, it is usb2), my Debian
testing (amd64, running 3.2.0-3-amd64) does not detect the disk.
/var/log/syslog reports errors and I have pasted those further below.

Searching various webpages and forums resulted in narrowing down the
solution to removing the "uas" module:
$> sudo modprobe -r uas

Now, when I connect the same hard disk to the same physical usb port, it
is detected fine.

Can somebody explain why this problem occurs and if there is a better
solution?

Thanks.
HS.

Did you solve your problem(s)?

I wish to do something similar, but more perhaps more
restrictive.

I am trying to demonstrate a possible installation bug and
prove that the "bug" is not "operator error".
Based on more than a half century of trouble shooting
experience in a variety of environments, I will

restrict the installation to:
  1. a laptop dedicated to this test which will never be
connected to any network, actual or virtual.

  2. the hard drive will be reformatted prior to each test run.
  3. the install media will be DVD 1 of 8 of Debian 6.0.5
from a commercial source.

  4. preseed.cfg will be on a USB stick.

I think I've found links to tell me how to point to preseed.cfg.
I think it should be possible to record the post install
state. I've more reading to do.

Comments, hints, pointers?

No, you cannot assume that the developers read the list. Many of them don't.
This is the _users_ list.

Yes, but the list is the wrong place to report it. If you want the
developers to take any notice, you have to file a bug report. A bug report
can, I believe, be a request for something that is not there. You can
complain all you like, the users can't do anything. And the fact that you
think something is obviously needed, does not mean that the developers will
necessarily agree with you.

That's complete nonsense md5sum is at first place a hash algorithm

Sorry for late reply.

I got the error message "command not found" when running 'glxinfo', I'm not
sure if I install the nvidia-glx correctly. here are the command I used when
I installed my driver:

# apt-get install module-assistant gcc nvidia-kernel-common
# m-a update
# m-a prepare
# m-a get nvidia
# m-a build nvidia
# m-a install nvidia
# apt-get install nvidia-glx

and i edited my xorg.conf after these commands, I commented out 'Load "dir"'
and 'Load "dir2"'(Load "glx" is in the file),then run command "echo
nvidia>/etc/modules".

output of lsmod is blow:

Chuckle.
My critical requirement was "single page". I mentioned
"html" only because all the Debian docs I've seen are in
html and I've seen web based documentation whose default was
similar to the d-i manual but offered an alternate URL for a
single page version. It's likely that at some point I would
have converted the html version to plain text ;)

Comment aimed at future readers:

The d-i manual is available in HTML, PDF, and plane text -

Information on txt2html available at

Mark, I know, that this multiarch is still on the way to working, However, I
see great power in it. But at the moment, I think, it is no good idea, to put
essential packages into multiarch. Instead they should put those packages
step-by-step into it. My mail aimed to show, what problems appear at the
moment. So others (and first of all the developers) can see, what trouble
appears.

Chris: There is no need, to file a bugreport, as a) it is wanted, to split 64-
bit and 32-bit of nvidia packages and b) it is already recognized in the list
what problems appear.

Best regards

Hans

Postfix 2.9.1: memcache support not build in

2012-10-20 Thread Urban Loesch

Hi,

I'm new to the list.
I have installed postfix 2.9.1 from squeeze backports to try out the new
"memcache" table feature in postfix.

But it seems that the .deb package has not build in the "memcache" table
by default.

postconf -m doesn't show me "memcache" as a build in module:

btree
cidr
environ
fail
hash
internal
mysql
pcre
proxy
regexp
sdbm
static
tcp
texthash
unix

Postmap gives me the error:
postmap -q "test" memcache:/etc/postfix/memcache.cf
postmap: fatal: unsupported dictionary type: memcache

Installed packages:
ii postfix 2.9.1-2~bpo60+1
ii postfix-mysql 2.9.1-2~bpo60+1
ii postfix-pcre 2.9.1-2~bpo60+1

I tried to download the debian source packages an recompile it with
dpkg-buildpackage, but I had no luck. Same result, the "memcache" table
feature is missing.

But if I compile postfix from the original sources postconf show's me
the "memcache" table build in by default.

According to me, here must be something wrong with the debian source
package.
Can you give me any hint how I can get "memcache" support in debian
packages? Probably is there some configuration option to change before

rebuilding the package?

Thanks and regards
Urban Loesch

Package gnus is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or

Excellent.!! So if you are going to install emacs23, you get Gnus for
free. It would be a waste not to use it.

BUT ...

root@tal:~# apt-get install emacs23

Compared to icedove it requires 69% more download and uses 43.7% more
diskspace.

I'm not running any desktop, just basic xorg and fvwm, and yet icedove
doesn't pull in extra libraries.

Just as (since I last looked) gnus is now included within emacs, icedove
has been "cleaned up" since you last looked?

login screen it showed me a black blank screen with a flashing cursor
- not mouse - and after more waiting it stayed there too.

Good! Now you know exactly what edits to what config files that you need
to undo.

I reboot after it and start with a previous kernel version number -
the number ends with 486, not 686 - with Rescue Mode. It started and
after Ctrl+D - when it needs - it booted the gui succesfully and
everything worked well.

So it sounds to me like there is no problem with your system as a whole,
just the boot config for the 686 kernel.

I would like to start the computer with the newest available kernel
version number, what ends with 686, and what were the default when I
started the system before, but it doesn't work and give me the error
screen what I mentioned before.

Please give me help to repair this to boot the computer normally as
before it was happenned.

I would:

Start the system the way you can, via rescue mode.

Undo the edits you made before. It might be enough to replace

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset
video=uvesafb:mode_option=1400x1050-24,mtrr=3,scroll=ywrap"

by

CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"

Run the same update-initramfs and update-grub commands as you did when
following the guide.

Hope it helps

Johan
