I have some bad news, it is happening again. Now, the problem is not
the keyboard; instead, if I change from virtual terminal (VT) 7 to 1 pressing
Ctrl + Alt + F1 before SDDM finishes loading, then when I come back
to VT 7 it gets stuck again.

I saw the logs with "journalctl -xe" and the messages are the same,
"sddm-helper" can not connect to display :0 of the X server,
or any display and it returns with an error. The "systemd" session
for "sddm" is stopped and the VT 7 only has a black screen and a cursor;
SDDM itself and the X server is still running.

What do you think? Should I report this as a bug?

Well, thanks for your time and help.

Have a nice day.

Assuming your sshd server is on a computer attached
to a router which is your gateway to the internet, and
the router is set to forward port 22 to that computer
some ISP's don't route port 22 traffic. I know that
AT&T blocks port 22 traffic and it gives that message.
I set the sshd server to listen on port 26 instead and
it works fine.

This message means one of these things:

1) The sshd process is not running, or is not listening on the default port.

2) A firewall is preventing your connection.

You would normally check the first thing by using "ss" or "netstat" on
the server, and verifying that the process is indeed LISTEN-ing on the
expected interface(s) and port. For example:

unicorn:~$ ss -ant | grep :22
LISTEN0  128  0.0.0.0:22 0.0.0.0:*
[...]

This tells me that something is listning on port 22 on all IPv4 interfaces.

If you don't see a line like this, then you need to investigate the ssh
service more deeply. Perhaps start by running "journalctl -u ssh" to
read its logs.

If you *do* see a line like this, then you need to look at network-level
stuff, like firewalls, routers, and so on.

Ideally you need to do more than open the ssh port, particularly if you
intend to connect from the Internet. ssh is one of the most commonly
attacked services, for obvious reasons.

You need a tutorial on setting up ssh with keys, and disabling password
access. There are many such on the Net.

openssh server remote access

2021-10-21 Thread Semih Ozlem
Hi everyone,

I set up an openssh server and I am trying to access that machine remotely
(not from the local network. but from another ip address). I get an error
(something about port 22). What setting needs to be checked and what needs
to be done on the machine that openssh server is running and on the router
that machine is connected to, so that openssh server can be accessed
remotely?

Thank you

isc-dhcp-server and use-host-decl-names

2021-10-21 Thread Charles Curley
I run two dhcpd servers on my LAN with failover and DDNS updates. In the
past I have set certain machines up with fixed addresses and host
names, like so:

host dragonw
{
   option host-name "dragonw";
   hardware ethernet ee:ee:ee:ee:ee:ee;
   fixed-address iii.iii.ii.i;
   ddns-hostname dragonw;
}

However, if I understand the man page for dhcpd.conf correctly, I can
get rid of both the ddns-hostname and host-name declarations by
enclosing the host declaration in a group which has use-host-decl-names
on, like so:

ignore client-updates;

group {
use-host-decl-names on;

host dragonw
{
   hardware ethernet ee:ee:ee:ee:ee:ee;
   fixed-address iii.iii.ii.i;
}

}

However, at least three cases since I made that change, dhcp has used
another name, which I guess is the name requested by the host.

What am I missing?

Early 2021 (Q1) is when that particular G6405 model was launched[1], but it's a
Comet Lake, which was originally launched August 21, 2019[2], so should be
Stretch-compatible at least via backports.

Very Interesting and most informative Dan, and thank you.

Carefully reading between the lines of several hits also explains why I
stopped having major failures of amanda, the backup software, when I
replaced a 1Tbyte seagate with a 240 gig series 860 samsung SSD, used as
a holding disk while amanda is collecting its data to be written to tape
w/o shoeshining the tape while at the same time cutting the time to do a
20 gig backup from 3 or 4 hours, to 20 minutes.

This post is also being sent to the amanda-users list to alert the users
who are currently being affected by this and not finding a definitive
answer.

Bottom line for amanda users is, do not use todays spinniing rust drives
as holding disks. They are simply not trustworthy for short term buffer
storage.

Symptoms are reported to the user as crc errors in the holding disk. That
particular DiskList Entry is then repeated until a good crc is obtained.
But that also leaves the bad crc data left on the holding disk
eventually using up its capacity without manual intervention to clean up
the mess. A genuine PITA for us, and leaves the drive makers in an
unfavorable, bad dog, no biscuit light.

Cheers, Gene Heskett.

So... that name is confusing as all hell, isn't it. I just Googled it,
and it turns out the full name of the CPU is "Intel Pentium Gold G6405"
and it was released this year.

I completely fail to understand Intel's branding strategy here. It
sounds like something ancient ("Pentium"), but apparently "Pentium Gold"
is something new. If they wanted it to sound new, they failed.

Now, knowing that this is a piece of hardware that was released in 2021,
I would *not* attempt to run Debian 9 on it. You *might* be able to
run Debian 11 on it, if you're lucky!

The xserver-xorg-video-intel package description says use of it is

Wikipedia is quite helpful for such queries.

Searching for 'SMR' brings one to a fairly long disambiguation page, but
there is only one entry mentioning hard drives ;)

The first two paragraphs of the article is already quite informative on
why one might want to avoid SMR drives.

Questions like this can be answered with an
internet search engine. Search for "Seagate SMR".
For fun you can add search terms like
"controversy guilty dreaded bad press" etc.

And what does this SMR acronym mean, Dan?

You could try manually installing only the kernel from bullseye (Debian
11) or buster-backports if that doesn't work out.

In general Debian is very flexible in using an older or newer kernel and
as far as I can tell the dependencies for the kernel in bullseye are
satisfied in stretch.

Hope this helps,

You should be able to return this drive without proving that it
is defective; this is one of Seagates' SMR drives that they did
not disclose were SMR.

Do you have a backport xserver-xorg-video-intel ? That's usually
the determining factor for X11 issues like this.

The other thing would be -- have you explicitly set the driver
to be intel in xorg.conf?

If neither of those things work, you should upgrade to 10 and
then 11.

Debian 9 on H410 hardware

2021-10-21 Thread altech
In general I'm wondering if it is possible to upgrade an older Debian
system to be compatible with newer hardware, without upgrading the whole
system to a later Debian version?

In particular, I'm wishing to get a Debian 9 system to run on an MSI
H410M-PRO-C board, with an Intel Pentium G6405 CPU. Have updated to
latest backport kernel, and firmware packages. For the most part
everything works fine, however Xorg is falling back to using fbdev

This system is used in an offline application, and I'm not ready to
upgrade to Debian 11 at this time.

Hi,
you may fist determine if it is a hardware issue or a software issue.
Some Mac screens are known to flicker after a while.
What is your computer ? Can you boot on Windows/MacOS to see if the same thing
happens ?
Knowing your hardware may help a lot.

First things first: update your computer. Security fixes and fixes for
other problems come out all the time.

What Debian version are you running?

On what sort of computer?

Do you have screensavers or similar kicking in?

is there a temperature issue?

Are there logs?

A little more information would be helpful.

Hi Lina

Try running aptitude update - to pull the updated list of packages - then
aptitude full-upgrade - you shouldn't see those sorts of inconsistencies.

Bullseye - Debian 11 - OK.

Temperature issue - only thinking that if it was something that only
happens after a long time, it might be because a componetn inside your
screen warms up / misbehaves.

Does anything else happen just before it all locks up?

All the very best, as ever,

RAID is meant only for uptime, backup is something else, see:

> You can try Btrfs raid1 or mdadm raid1.

Mostly agreed with btrfs[1] (though ZFS is probably better, if you are
fine with out-of-tree kernel modules[2]).

On the other hand mdadm can't detect silent corruption. In case a flaky
drive (like the one discussed here) returns corrupted data claiming it
is good mdadm RAID can't detect this, and in case it detects it, it has
no way to determine which data is good.

Worst case it might even overwrite the good data with the bad one
(because the bad data appears to be newer).

Yep.
