2) For some reason pppd disconnects after some amount of time all by

Thats probably your ISP kicking you off. Mine has a 2 hour limit.

I don't know the correct solution to your problem, but you could try this:
Do touch ppp.log to create the file, then use chown and chmod so

Unless it's a PnP modem, in which case pon will not connect. So if it's
pnp, get isapnp pzackage first and configure the modem.

Hi,
How do I set up my modem in Debian? I have installed the base system and a
bunch of other things including Minicom and when I opened Minicom the system
froze while itializing the modem.
Thanks.
What kind of modem is it?
Anyway, that freezing sounds like it could be an IRQ
I was able to get the font and keyboard support (didnt go into locales,
since I still live in US) for koi8 by installing the fonts from cronyx and
a keyboard switcher called xrus.
Works very good for me, Netscape/xterm/emacs are now russified.
You can get the exact procedure from A. Chernov's page
So,
How do I setup lilo or loadlin to boot hdb? Which is better??
AFAIK, loadlin is used to boot to linux from Dos/Windows.
I use LILO myself. Kinda gives me flexibility of being exposed to windows
only whenever I have to be.
But to setup LILO:
chances are you already have it. If you don't ,
Ok, I've recently got my hands on one more modem, and I have this
question:
On the box of my original modem, SupraExpress 33.6, there was somehting
about if I had 2 modems, I could set them up so that they work
simultaneously, thus increasing the speed.
Anyone done that in Windows, and did it
Have you done any upgrades to your system lately hardware-wise?
I've had a problem with system locking down for 30 sec-1 minute whenever
ppp was working. Solved with a kernel recompile and a little bit of time.
(It was a time when I put in a new motherboard and didnt recompile the
kernel for it.)
devices in Linux are named as follows:
/dev/hda for master on primary IDE
/dev/hdb for slave on prim. IDE
/dev/hdc for master on sec. IDE
/dev/hdd for slave on sec. IDE
Now, just you need to know where your cdrom is.

Well, basicly, it's all been said how to get the card working.
I hope you succeed at that. I was never able to get my card working,
though. What you can do is this:
WHenever setting up the sound options in kernel, do the loadable module
support. As I was explained before, kernel will initialize
I had no luck with it, but just couple of days ago I ran across an old
SB16 card. One that comes with 2xCDROM, that has an IDE interface on the
card itself. That card worked perfectly with kernel compiled to SB
support.
Dunno where you can get one of those antiques, though. I got it from a
DX2
Ok, I figured I'd upgrade to potato from hamm.
What packages/libraries will need to be upgraded, except downloading the
kernel?
TIA,
Andrew
Next get into the /usr/src/linux dir and type make xconfig.
Then do each of these:
click on Sound
click y for Sound card support
click y for Sound Blaster (SB, SBPro, SB16, clones) support
scroll down a little ways
click y for /dev/dsp and /dev/audio support
click y for MIDI interface
Yeah, that should be no problem. You can install it and use LILO to get
in, or boot from a floppy.

Afternoon all.
Is there any circuit design software for Linux?
I need to find a replacement for the program that my prof. wants me to
useand I would hate to go back to windows every time I wnt to work on
it, since wine will not do the sim.
I am trying to build a dedicated Windows machine, but
Ok, this is what I had to do when I needed to free one of my disks for
Windows.:
1. reinstate the mbr on that disk, if it has been changed.
2. cfdisk/fdisk to partition to fat16
After this it SHOULD work, however, when I was doing it, I actually had to
reformat the disk.
Now, to the bootable disk.
I want to set up the OS and of course experiment with internet access.
I would like to download Netscape. Could someone please enlighten me as
to which version I download?
Hrm. That depends on your machine. If you are using glibc6, download
glib6 one from netcape ftp. If you are using libc5,
Buying OSS could be a way, yes...
But what would you need sound for the very first minute you install Linux
for anyway? I think that you'd have more things to do than listen to
music.

Actually, I haven't edited mine at all, so unless the kernel
compilation does something to it, there's no sound stuff in it.
Kernel compilation does nothing to isapnp.conf
You have to do pnpdump (if you havent done do yet), and configure the card
manually.
Andrew
JUst post the isapnp.conf you have to the list, we'll take a look at it.
