That's because DOS is broken. You have to zero the first 512bytes
of the partition (as DOS does) or it gets confused. It's all
documented in cfdisk's man page.

. You need to copy the file
atapi.sys from service pack 2. This fault has a very similar effect for
NT - you can't make an NT rescue disk because it insists on formatting
the disk first.

unless you've already removed the script itself.
I believe the Right Way is just to unset the
executable permission for /etc/init.d/xdm .

My experience with SunOS is that if you put a ~/.terminfo tree on
the sun with xterm-debian, everything works correctly. Just copy
/etc/terminfo over recursively.
