Changing starting directory for video players

2015-05-01 Thread Edward C. Jones

I use Debian 8.0 (Jessie), amd64 port, and KDE.

Dragon Player has starting directory: ~Videos.
VLC has starting directory: ~
KPlayer starts at the last directory used.
KMPlayer starts at ~/Documents.

How do I change the starting directory for these video players? Which
config files contain this information?

A few pixels are missing at the left and right of screen

2015-04-29 Thread Edward C. Jones
I have just installed Debian 8.0 (Jessie), amd64 port. I have a Samsung
E2420 monitor. The video board uses the AMD (ATI cedar) Radeon HD 5450
chip set. I had to install firmware-linux-nonfree to get the full 1920
x 1280 resolution.

In Jessie, a few pixels at the left and right of the screen are off the
edge of the monitor. The same thing happened in up-to-date Wheezy but
all the missing pixels are on the right side of the screen. If I adjust
the monitor to move the screen to the right, a black edge of the display
appears at the left side of the monitor, but the pixels are still
missing. My guess is that the monitor is displaying every pixel it
received. Perhaps the video driver or the software is chopping off the
display. How do I fix this?

Locally compiled Python 3.3.0a3 cannot find Debian BeautifulSoup4

I use up-to-date Debian testing (wheezy), amd64 architecture. I downloaded,

altinstall. Debian wheezy comes with python3.2 (and 2.6 and 2.7). I
installed the Debian package python3-bs4 (BeautifulSoup4 for Python3).

Python3.3a3 cannot find module bs4. Python3.2 can find the module. Here is
a session with Python 3.3:

Where to store Icon for xv

2012-05-03 Thread Edward C. Jones

I use up-to-date debian testing (wheezy), amd64 version, with kde.

I have just compiled and installed the old image viewer xv. In stable
(squeeze), there is an icon for xv that can be put on the panel. For
testing (wheezy), the system could not find an xv icon, so I installed a
blank icon. But an icon appears to exist in
/usr/share/icons/mono/scalable/apps/xv.svgz.

The process for changing a application icon on the panel appears to be:
Right click on the old icon
   Click Icon Settings
Click on the spot where the icon should be (upper left of Icon
Settings window)

   Choose new icon.
Where do I put xv.svgz (or any icon I download) so this process can find it?

octave linked to octave-3.6.1 but only octave-3.6.1 will start octave

2012-03-01 Thread Edward C. Jones

I use Debian stable linux (squeeze). echo $PATH gives (newlines added and
name replaced):

/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/games:
/usr/games:/home//bin:/home//lib:/home//lib/python:
/home//bin:/home//lib:/home//lib/python

If I do

cd /usr/bin
ls -il *

the output includes

262067 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Mar 21 2011 python - python2.6
262052 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2288272 Dec 26 2010 python2.6

If I type python, Python runs. Python also runs from my home directory.
This Python came with squeeze.

I have just compiled and installed octave from source and removed the Debian
octave packages. If I do

cd /usr/local/bin
ls -il

the output includes

1584647 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root staff 12 Feb 29 22:14 octave - octave-3.6.1
1584644 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root staff 7346 Feb 29 22:14 octave-3.6.1

If I type octave, it does not run. The error message is:

bash: /usr/bin/octave: No such file or directory

But octave-3.6.1 or ./octave both start octave.

If cd to my home directory, octave-3.6.1 runs octave but octave gives
the same error message.

Both the python and octave links appear to be soft links. /usr/local/bin
is in my PATH. Why do python and octave behave differently? What do I
change so I can run octave by typing octave?

Guarddog causes intermittent system hang during boot

font size in an xterm, hit control-right-click and a VT Fonts menu will
appear. Choose a new font. I prefer the Small font. I want to change
the default font to Small so I don't have to reset the font every time I
 open a new xterm.

If you already have a .Xdefaults and/or a ./Xresources file in your home
directory then you know what you are doing and do not need my suggestions.
I start without without either a .Xdefaults or a ./Xresources file.

Look at /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm. There are the following 6 lines in this
file:

*VT100.utf8Fonts.font2:
-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--8-80-75-75-c-50-iso10646-1
*VT100.utf8Fonts.font:
-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-is
*VT100.utf8Fonts.font3:
-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--14-130-75-75-c-70-iso10646
*VT100.utf8Fonts.font4:
-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--13-120-75-75-c-80-iso10646
*VT100.utf8Fonts.font5:
-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--18-120-100-100-c-90-iso106
*VT100.utf8Fonts.font6:
-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--20-200-75-75-c-100-iso1064

I suspect but I am not sure that the fonts are defined here. But they are
also in /etc/X11/app-defaults/UXTerm.

I created a ./Xdefaults file in my home directory containing:

xterm.VT100.font: -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--14-130-75-75-c-70-iso10646-1

This is copied from the font3 line above. Note the dots in
xterm.VT100.font. They are important. Dots override

stars in X resource definitions.

Restart X and all is well.

If I remember correctly, this was easier to do in Debian 3.1 (sarge).
Right-click on the title bar or something.

Synaptic hangs when updating Debian testing

I use Debian testing, i386 port, on a PC. Today (4/28/10), I tried to

Those imports can not be found. Falling back to pager.
The error is: No module named glade

Smartcard support is now available using PKCS#11 tokens. If you
were previously using an unofficial build of Debian's OpenSSH
package with OpenSC-based smartcard support added, then note

that commands like 'ssh-add -s 0' will no longer work; you need to use
 'ssh-add -s /usr/lib/opensc-pkcs11.so' instead.

Screen shifted to left for console and X for Acer AL2016W

2010-02-27 Thread Edward C. Jones
I have a new computer with an Intel DH55TC Motherboard. Attempts to
install the i386 stable distribution failed because the installer could
not find the DVD reader. I was able to install i386 testing. I have an
Acer AL2106W monitor with a length/width of 1.6. When I boot the system,
KDE and the _console_ are not centered on the monitor. They are too
large in the vertical direction by about 1/2 cm (1/3 in). The display is
shifted to the left by about 6 cm (2.5 in) so the left part of the
screen in invisible and there is a black area on the right. The fonts
are poor. If I create a Xorg.conf with the largest mode being 1280x1024
instead of 1680x1050, X works but the screen is stretched.

Google shows that many people have had X configuration problems with
this monitor. But I am also having the same problem with the console.
Where is the best place to find real expertise about this problem?

Huge fonts: X / KDE may be ignoring DisplaySize

relevant. The first is Bug#461501: xserver-xorg-core: dpi set to 96 inspite

Problem installing local package

2007-12-08 Thread Edward C. Jones
I am installing Debian on a new hard drive I bought. I have a PC with an
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ chip. I installed Debian stable (4.0) amd64 port. I
updated it to unstable. I put xv-doc_3.10a-1duo1_all.deb and
xv_3.10a-1duo+etch1_amd64.deb into /usr/local/src/debian. The file
/etc/apt/sources.list contains the line:

  deb file:/usr/local/src/ debian/

apt-get install xv failed. Does anyone know what I did wrong?

Icedove 2.0.0.0-3 badly broken

2007-05-22 Thread Edward C. Jones
I have a PC with an AMD Athlon64 3500+ chip. I have up-to-date Debian
unstable, i386 port, on the system. Yesterday synaptic installed a new
version of icedove: 2.0.0.0-3. This version was badly broken: I couldn't
even press the buttons on the GUI. I replaced the broken version with
1.5.0.10.dfsg1-3 which works fine.

The package documentation at debian.org says:

  Package: icedove (2.0.0.0-3, 2.0.0.0-2, 2.0.0.0-1, 1.5.0.10.dfsg1-3)

  Versions: 2.0.0.0-2 [alpha, hppa, ia64], 1.5.0.10.dfsg1-3 [arm, i386,
  kfreebsd-i386, m68k, mips, mipsel, sparc], 2.0.0.0-1 [powerpc],
  2.0.0.0-3 [amd64, s390]

Was there some confusion somewhere that led to the wrong version being
installed?

Re: Can't find cable Internet Connection

2007-05-19 Thread Edward C. Jones
Roberto C Sanchez asked about lights on the motherboard lan connector
for the cable modem. This lan connector is the type of connector used on
US telephones which has a lever that must be pressed to release the
connector. There is a light on which is just counterclockwise of where
the lever enters the rececticle. At Sanchez's suggestion I removed the
connector and plugged it back in. /sbin/ifconfig showed only the
loopback entry.

Ron Johnson suggested I run /etc/init.d/networking restart. It wrote
nothing to /var/log/syslog.

ps ax shows no dhcp or dhcpcd demon running.

These manpages have been relocated from /usr/share/man/man1x to
/usr/share/man/man1. For example the xtrap man page is now at
/usr/share/man/man1/xtrap.1x.gz.

This is clearly a bug. But I don't have a clue which package the bug
belongs with.

Xorg upgrade: Getting twm not kde

2006-04-16 Thread Edward C. Jones

I use a PC with an AMD Athlon64 3500+ chip and Debian unstable, i386 port.

At about 6 PM (EDT) on April 15, 2006, I used synaptic to upgrade my
system. When I enter startx I now get some simple window manager
instead of KDE. An article in debian-user suggested that X was using
/usr/lib/x11/xinit/xinitrc. This seems to be correct since I am getting
the three xterms and a clock mentioned in that file. Therefore I am
probably in twm.

I want startx to start KDE. Which config file changes do I need to make?

How do I exit twm?

New X upgrade in unstable makes fonts too big

2006-04-12 Thread Edward C. Jones
I have a PC with an AMD Athlon64 chip and Debian unstable, i386 port. My
monitor is 1024x768. It is 328mm by 246mm (17 in).

Today (April 11 2006) X was upgraded in unstable. Now all my fonts are
much bigger.

Some of the lines returned by xdpinfo are:

version number:11.0
X.Org version: 7.0.0
screen #0:
  dimensions:2032x1530 pixels (321x241 millimeters)
  resolution:161x161 dots per inch

Here is part of my xorg.conf. Note the Virtual.
SubSection Display
Depth24
Modes1024x768 832x624 720x400 640x480
Virtual 2032 1530

If I comment out the Virtual line and restart X, the fonts are much
smaller. It looks like the Virtual line is being used (incorrectly) to
set font size. What is the problem and what should I do?

Unpack the bz2 files. The installation instructions are in

libxt-dev should be installed. libtiff, libjpeg, libpng and zlib

compiler will complain.

There are compiler warnings for xvpcd.c. If they say something like

They can be ignored.

installed with the Dec 19 testing Net Install instead of the Dec 12
testing CD set.

Can I install a package and restrict its use to only one other package?

2005-12-31 Thread Edward C. Jones
The unofficial packages for the image viewer XV are getting old. When
I try to install them it fails because XV requires libtiff3g which
cannot be installed because of conflicts. Is there some way of
installing XV and libtiff3g so that only XV sees libtiff3g? Some sort of
renaming or encapsulation?

Should installation process fix firefox, thunderbird mailto problem?

2005-12-31 Thread Edward C. Jones
After I install the firefox and mozilla-thunderbird package, mailto
links in firefox and http links in thunderbird do not work. The
well-known fix is

In the prefs.js file for firefox put the line:

user_pref(network.protocol-handler.app.http, mozilla-firefox);

and in the prefs.js file for thunderbird add the line:

user_pref(network.protocol-handler.app.http, mozilla-firefox);

Should (Can) this be done automatically by the installer for the packages?

Installing testing: can't get cable Internet after reboot

2005-12-29 Thread Edward C. Jones
I have a PC with an AMD64 chip. I have two disks with different versions
of debian on them. The first system (which I will call K) is Kanotix
which I regularly update from Debian unstable. It has been working well
for quite a while. The second system (which I will call T) is Debian
testing based on the 12/12/05 release on CDs. I select which system to
boot in the hardware by using cables and jumpers for the drives. When K
is booted, it can see T. I prefer to completely disconnect K when I am in T.

Both systems connect to the Internet using a cable modem connected to an
ethernet board. I have had the following problem twice with sytem T: I
install the system and it works for a while. I spend this time
installing packages and running updates using aptitude and/or synaptic.
This process involves a number of reboots of T. After one of these
reboots, I cannot connect to the Internet. Afterwards, each time I
reboot again, I have the same problem.

Here are some packages that might be relevant:

packageinstalled on
dh-makeK
dhcp-clientK T
dhcp3-common K
dhcp3-server K
dnsmasqK
dnsutils K T
host K
libdns20 K T

The following line is in ps ax for both systems:
dhclient -e -pf /var/run/dhclient.eth0.pid -lf
/var/run/dhclient.eth0.leases e

This line occurs for K only:
/usr/sbin/dnsmasq -u dnsmasq

The first time I had the problem I solved it by reinstalling Debian.
Ugh. The second time the bad boot happened after I had configured KDE.

How can I solve my problem? Do I need to install dnsmasq on T? If so,
can I download it to K then copy it somewhere in T?

Anyone know how to turn Kanotix into pure Debian unstable?

Why does Debian default to Gnome?

2005-12-28 Thread Edward C. Jones
Why does Debian default to gnome? When I install a recent testing, if
I choose a desktop system, both kde and gnome are installed and gnome is
used. Is there a Debian document somewhere explaining why gnome ws chosen?

The default gnome theme is first rate but kde seems to be more
configurable. Is there a gnome-like theme for kde? Are there hidden
configuration options for gnome (in conf files, etc.)? Sample question:
how do I make windows snap to each other in gnome?

Why are KDE and Gnome mixed together?

2005-11-25 Thread Edward C. Jones
I installed stable (3.1) and got a mix of KDE and Gnome. I removed most
of Gnome and upgraded (easily!) to unstable. I still get the mix. Why
are KDE and Gnome mixed together? Where is this mix and its
configuration documented? Why was this done?

Re: Why are KDE and Gnome mixed together?

2005-11-25 Thread Edward C. Jones
I removed X and everything that needs X. Then I reinstalled X and KDE.
So I presume I am running KDE. But why gnome menus, themes, fonts, etc.?
Where are the docs for this? Configuration program? Configuration files?

I use Debian unstable on a PC.

Anyone know where I can find a list of the status codes returned by

The last sentence should be changed to:

So the interpretation of this enum may not be trivial.

Synaptic claims deb files not at debian

2005-07-26 Thread Edward C. Jones

I use a PC with Debian unstable. synaptic has been giving me many
messages like:

W: Failed to fetch

My browser showed the file and wget downloaded it. What is the problem?

Difficulty using Synaptic for recent big update to unstable

2005-07-13 Thread Edward C. Jones

I have a PC with an up-to-date installation of Debain unstable.

Two days ago, a large number of packages in unstable were updated,
mostly gcc and X related. The Synaptic Smart Upgrade did not accept
the x-window-system-core, xbase-clients, or xutils packages. Anyone know
what the problem is?
