Re: OFF TOPIC: where did MICROPOLIS go?

1998-09-13 Thread Jieyao

I believe that group is ST - Singapore Technologies. The former factory is now
in the process of finding someone to takeover. And no one is taking it up due
to
the bad sate of economy here.

sorry to be a pain, but does anyone know what ever happened to
Micropolis Corp.? I found an old 3243 4.3gig SCSI drive that I need info
on. I've searched for Micropolis, but the phone numbers and web sites I
found are all dead. Did someone take them over?

Loss-making Micropolis was taken over by a Singapore group, which closed
Micropolis after failing to get it out of the red.

Copying files over samba

1998-09-11 Thread Jieyao
Hi,

I am thinking of doing something as follows...

I have a debian and a win95 connected over a network and samba is running.
I am thinking of setting up something like a 'mutual backup'. That is, I want
some data files on the win95 to be backup to the debian and vice versa.

I was thinking of writing a perl script to do that but have no idea how to
access
samba. A check at CPAN did not find any modules to access samba.

Is there any way to do this?

TIA!

Lotus Notes like application

1998-08-23 Thread Jieyao
Hi,

We were discussing Linux vs Win one day and we got stuck when someone
mentioned that there isn't any Linux application that does what Lotus Notes
does. Indeed, off hand we knew of nothing that does work flow stuff or what is
commonly termed 'groupware'.

Is this true? I feel that there might be some application that does a bit here
and
there of what Notes does, but not one as integated as Notes.
Perhaps there is a project some where taking care of this?

Thanks.

Hi,

Did the telnet to the site work before you upgrade to 2.0?
Are you using Xwindows?

When I connect to certain hosts via telnet (similar via ftp), I'll get a
 messgae like this:

 Connected to site.whatever.edu
 Escape character is '^]'.

 which is as usual

 then followed by:

 Connection closed by foreign host.

Assume for the moment that it is not an ISP problem, is there anything
specific to my machine that is causing this?

 I'd love some hints.

any risk in using /home/root

I figured that since this is gonna store user information and files, I might as

put the root home there too.
So I created /home/root and change /root to a symbolic link to /home/root
Is there any security risk in doing this?

One problem that I can think of is if there is any serious problem and the

partition can't mount than probably root can login. This is correct?

Diald problem

1998-07-26 Thread Jieyao

I am having some problem with diald. Iam using it with ppp and ip masquerade.
I have an internal network which I assign the standard 192.168.0.x This is
working fine. The modem is connected to the linux box. If I don't use diald,
pppd works fine and I am able to go out using ip masquerade, no problem.

Now, the problem start when I add diald. When it dial out, it some how does
not change the default route from pointing at sl0 to ppp0 so the network can't
go out. So what I do is at the ip-up and ip-down scripts I manually delete the
default sl0 before ppp is up and add default sl0 when ppp is down. This makes
it work. But am I doing it correctly? I thought diald is supposed to handle all
this rerouting??

Re: Please help with IP Aliasing

I am currently setting up a Mail and Webserver (hamm, 2.0.33). I have
got a whole package of 256 IP addresses that I want to assign to this
server. In the NET-3-HOWTO I read that I have to set it up like this:
Why do you want to give the machine 256 ips? It's pointless unless you do
webhosting, and there are better ways of doing that eg with apache's
 VirtualHost setup.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I believe that even for apache you still need IP for
each
virtualhost since each is going to be a diffenent domain. I think there are
some
way to do non-IP virtualhost but you would be handicapped in other services.

What is the danger of continuing?

When I do a forced check on bootup (using shutdown -F) I almost always get

Re: Samba: password for mapping network drives

1998-06-27 Thread Jieyao
Hi,

If you are running your samba in an internal network like for my case (at home),
you can try commenting off security = user

Then you will not be prompt for password at all.

Any comment about this? Security?

I'm running the nmbd and smbd Samba daemons, and having trouble
mapping a
network drive on my windows machine to any of my mounted drives. I've
tried the following ways of connecting using windows' map utility (i.e. in
 explorer):

 \\debian\hda# (where # = appropriate drive partition)
 \\debian\usr (or \root, \var, or \usr)

In either case, the map utility prompts me for a password to connect to
these resources. I've tried the root password, and all the passwords for
individual users, but it always comes back and says, the password is
incorrect, please try again. Is there another password that I'm not
aware of that I need to be entering here, or another daemon I'm not yet
running to be able to map a network drive in this way? The man pages
didn't provide as much help as I wished.

Re: Linux system Instalation - CRC Error

1998-06-26 Thread Jieyao

I have a feeling that Debian /Linux is particularly sensitive to media defect.
Even
when I use disk that are formatted perfectly in win95, I still get error during
installing.
Something retrying works.

But the easiest way out is to get a new box of floppy. You would need 9 disks,
about a box.

BTW, what's the root disk for? I don't think it was used for installation.

Sounds like you there may be a media defect on the floppy you used for the
rescue disk. Use another floppy. This is pretty common.

Here is what I do do make a Debian boot floppy set. It is kinda time
consuming, but it has pretty much eliminated this kind of problem for me.

DOS (Win95, whatever) format the stack of floppys that you plan to use for
your installation set. Watch the output messages. If the format program
marks any sectors as bad, toss the disk or at least dont use it to make
 your installation set.

How do you know the route is lost? Typing `route' will result in a slew
of DNS lookups - that could be your delay. Try `route -n'. (`netstat -rn'
does the same thing and has the added benefit of being in a user's default
 path :)

Well I I don't know for sure. What I know is before I do anything, it takes
forever
to find the route. But if I rerun the network setup, route pops up immediate.
And not only that, external network can't reach it until I rerun the network
setup.

 If `route -n' doesn't show anything, then yes, you've got a problem.

I think I do... any idea what I can do?

BTW, your emailer tries to use unusally long lines.
