I have found out that the problem occurs only if the menu entry for this app
needs text, as in

It does seem to occur if the app needs x11. An example for such a text app

Dselect is slow on my old machine. How can I put a package on hold without
using Dselect?
dpkg does not have such an action as far as I can see.
