Re: x will not let me log in as anything but root
Hello. I changed the second line of /etc/X11/Xserver to allow anybody to ryn the Xserver with the same result. Which other X files are related to passwords? Could some other file need to be edited ? mouse and keyboard problems in x 3.3.6
Good day, Thanks to help from several on this list, I am very close to getting my mouse and keyboard problems taken care of. I really appreciate the time out of your busy schedules. Here is where I'm at currently. I'm so very close to fixing both problems. My mouse works in console mode just fine, in x not so fine. The line in the /etc/gpm.conf file reads : type =PS/2, so I changed the same line to type=PS/2 in the XF86Config file. In the /etc/gpm.conf file there is a symbolic link from /dev/mouse to /etc/gpmdata. However, in the /etc/gpm.conf.file, an earlier line reads: device/etc/psaux. There is not a symbolic link between /dev/psaux to /dev/mouse. I took care of most of the keyboard problems, the only thing is that I have a microsoft natural keyboard, and I cannot use the number pad on the far right. Everything else on the keyboard works fine, and the server no longer sends me error messages when I try to start x. For your review, relevant sections of my XF86Config file as it now stands: ** keyboard section Protocol standard AutoRepeat500 5 XkbModel Microsoft EndSection *** Section Pointer ProtocolPS/2 Device /dev/gpmdata BaudRate 1200 #ZaxisMapping 4 5 Buttons3 EndSection ** X does start, and the pointer goes to the bottom of the screen, but it will only move back and forth across the bottom of the screen, but not up and down. regards, Bob Edwards [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fayetteville, Arkansas
Mouse not working in X -- still
Greetings, My mouse is not working in X. I've made a lot of silly mistakes along the way that have made things a lot more difficult than necessary. But I persist . . . Pertinent information: PS/2 Mouse Bus mouse Potato version: 2.2.17 X version: 3.3.6 If I'm understanding the HOW-TOS correctly, 2.2.17 does not support a busmouse. Is that correct. Please be patient with a newbie, and help if your own busy schedules permit. Regards, Bob Edwards [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fayetteville, Arkansas
usb mouse
Good morning! I had no luck geting linux to recognize my mouse (at least partially I suspect because of some unique I/O and IRQ settings the people that built my system for me -- non-standard stuff). I've installed a USB mouse which works fine on the windows side of my system, HOW DO I GET LINUX AND X TO RECOGNIZE MY USB MOUSE (and other USB devices as far as that goes). I'm under tremendous time pressure, please help if you have the time. Thanks in advance. regards, Bob Edwards [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fayetteville, Arkansas
more problems with X
Greetings ! After help from a lot of folks on this list, I have a good news-bad news situation. The good news is that x is now running. The bad news: (1) when x fires up, I only have what appears to be the upper left 25 % of the screen; (2) I have a Microsoft Natural keyboard, and the number pad on the far right of the keyboard does not work; (3) linux automatically starts the xserver, and I can't get to a console to check out my xf86config file to see what the is the problem. I will be most appreciative of any guidance. Please point me to a HOW-TO or something that can give me some guidance. Regards, Bob Edwards [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fayetteville, Arkansas

installing Mach 64 Xserver
I installed debian from a 3 CD set. When I tried to use 'XF86Setup' I got as far as trying to install my video card and XF86Setup gave me the following message: The server required by your card is not installed. Please install the MAch 64 serever as /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_Mach64 When I went through the install program with the 3 CDs, I don't recall having had the opportunity to install an X server. frustration with debian installation
Greetings from a very frustrated newbie. After numerous attempts, I finally got the base system and packages installed, but I now have what seems like the overwhelming task of configuring everything so I can actually use the new system I saved for months to purchase. (1) What all do I have to configure if I want to use gnome as my gui ? (2) Am I correct in my understanding that the x-windows system is the standard debian gui, and I can choose to use gnome instead? (3) how do I configure gnome? (4) I have readLinux system commands by Volkerding and Reichard, and got some help there, but at the moment I'm extraordinarily frustrated. (5) I hate windows so bad, that I will never go back. (6) please guide me through the jungle of configring my new debian OS so I can use this wonderful computer and debian to accomplish my long-held dream of establishing a publishing company. Regards Bob Edwards Fayetteville, Arkansas [EMAIL PROTECTED]

preparing to install debian
Good morning! I ordered a three CD set of debian cds and am preparing to install debian. I have some specific questions: (1) how do i configure debian for dsl ? (2) What do I have to do to get debian to recognize all three of my hard drives ? (3) what do I have to do to be able to dual boot to either debian (yea) or windows 98 (boo!!) ? (4) what is this potato that I keep reading about? I am very new to Linux, but have chosen it as the primary os for my computer because of its stability and reliability. I have a lot to learn, but I have to start somewhere. regards, Bob Edwards Fayetteville, Arkansas [EMAIL PROTECTED]
