Strange reboot
Hi all, I was wondering whether any one could explain why my machine would spontaneously reboot itself. It's a Debian unstable box running kernel 2.4.4. Personally I suspect some sort of issue with the kernel itself. I doubt that the machine has been broken into since absolutely nothing has shown up in my logs, no port scans, no TCP/IP connections, nothing in my Apache and proftpd logs. Any thoughts? Thanks for the help, Cheng

There's also an open bug report at bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=97195repeatmerged=yes Currently the only workaround I've seen is to rebuild ypserv with the new libc. HHTH, Cheng
Mutt and NFS
Hi all, I have a question about running Mutt and NFS together. My current mail setup has procmail delivering mail to ~/mail and mutt reading the mail boxes from there. However, when I'm reading mail from my other box (which has /home mounted from NFS), mutt always open my mail-boxes read-only. I've read the Readme.NFS that came with mutt but would rather not have to mount the entire /home tree with the 'nolock' option. Also, the mutt FAQ says that I can get around this by configuring mutt using the '--with-homespool' option, but I haven't figure out how to do this. Any hints/advice? Both boxes are currently running unstable. Thanks in advance, Cheng
Re: ssh in woody?
I've build a new box, very basic. I did an upgrade to woody and now I try apt-get install ssh and it can't find a candidate??? Help? ssh is in the non-US part of Debian. To install it add a line like deb ftp://ftp.de.debian.org/debian-non-US potato/non-US main contrib non-free to your sources.list file, and then run apt-get again. Hope this helps, Cheng
Mail receipts
Does anyone know how to configure either exim or mutt so that I can request and receive read receipts for my email? Thanks for any help in advance, Cheng

Re: apache
anybody the debs of apache-common_1.3.13 or 1.3.12 and apache_1.3.13 or 1.3.12 left to mail me? libapache-mod-perl requires apache = 1.3.13 and woody's current version is 1.3.14 I think it's been fixed. mod-perl now works with 1.3.14. Cheng pgp1uZbY9YmmV.pgp Description: PGP signature

Sawfish default font color
How do I change my default font color in sawfish 0.34? I'm running dark-colored GTK Sawfish themes; in a lot of apps, like GnomeCal and Gnome Control Center, the text defaults to black and thus is impossible to see... I suspect that it has something to do with the 'default-foreground' variable. However, trying to change it to white through my .sawfishrc doesn't seem to work; when checking the value in sawfish-client, it is set to white, but the font is still black. Any solutions? Thanks in advance, Cheng

Yes...don't know about the reasoning behind the change. On my machine, it's set to anybody to allow me to run gdm and use startx. If it's set to console, gdm doesn't seem to work; setting it to rootonly prevents me from using startx. Also, I had a problem about gdm not respawning the X server properly after logging out when it was set to rootonly. anybody seems to be the only option that allows me to do both. YMMV. Cheng
Re: spidermonkey.helixcode.com down?
Yes, the site was down for a bit earlier today. It's back up now as of 1:40 a.m CST. Cheng Dear debian-users, I decided to take the plunge and add the HelixCode site to sources.list, and 'apt-get install task-helix-gnome task-helix-gnome-dev' -- I figured I might as well get up to date with Gnome and see how it is these days. I get some errors from apt-get of this nature (for about 5 packages): Err http://spidermonkey.helixcode.com unstable/main sawfish-gnome 0.33.1-helix2 404 Not Found Failed to fetch http://spidermonkey.helixcode.com/distributions/debian/dists/woody/main/binary-i386/sawfish-gnome_0.33.1-helix2_i386.deb 404 Not Found Unable to correct missing packages. E: Aborting Install. I tried again, a couple times. Then I tried apt-get update just to make sure things were square, and the connection is timed out. Now I can't even ping spidermonkey. Am I just unlucky in my timing, or what? Anyone else seeing this? =wl

First off don't use telnet...use ssh instead. Telnet isn't secure at all because it's completely clear text. And yes, there are debs for the ssh system (but you'll need a non-US deb source). Once you've converted to ssh, edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config and set PermitRootLogin to yes. Personally, I wouldn't do that -- I have PermitRootLogin set to no for safety; this requires me to ssh in as a normal user then su to root. Cheng

Re: looking for the libssl095a file
To support the https protocol in Konqueror(KDE2) I need the libssl095a.deb file, it isn't in kde.tdyc.com site, someone knows where I can find? libssl095a is a non-US package (due to export restrictions). You'll have to grab it from one of the non-US sites, like ftp.de.debian.org I would suggest adding a non-US mirror to your sources.list just for convenience sake. Insert a line like this: deb ftp://ftp.de.debian.org/debian-non-US stable/non-US main contrib non-free You can then 'apt-get libssl095a' to grab the package. Cheng

You can prevent modprobe from trying to load it by commenting out the appropriate line from /etc/modules.conf 2) Also when i boot up how do i disable a nfs and lpd service from starting automatically? Provided nfs is a user space daemon and not one built into the kernel -- change the symlinks in your /etc/rc2.d directory to stop these services instead of starting them. This is accomplished by changing the symlink from S* to K*. For example to stop the lp service, move /etc/rc2.d/S20lpd (or whatever it's called on your system) to /etc/rc2.d/K20lpd Simlarly, to stop NFS, move /etc/rc2.d/S20nfs-server (again, if that's what it's called on your system) to /etc/rc2.d/K20nfs-server 3) I just installed console-apt, what are the differences between console-apt and dselect (which one should i use?) Not sure what the exact differences are. Personally I prefer apt over dselect unless I'm not sure exactly what package(s) I'm looking for. In my experience, apt does a better job of checking for dependency problems. Hope this help, Cheng
Re: Gnome window raisng question
Give focus to windows even when they have not asked for it ? If not selected, you can click on a window, raise it, and it still won't have focus. Does click to focus mode pass the click through to the window (Well I don;t want click to focus mode) Just a word of caution: disabling pass the click through to the window can have some weird effects. I tried that once and windows stopped responding to mouse clicks... Raise windows when they are focuse (No, I don;t want that). Uncheck that. Focus follows mouse. Change the When does the mouse pointer affect the input focus option from click to either enter-exit or enter-only Windows are raised _only_ whne you click on the border. Wow...not really sure how or even if it can be done (I'm pretty sure it can). One other place that might have something to do with this is the 'shortcuts' section of the sawfish config tool. Unbinding the 'Button1-Click' and 'Button1-Up' events in the window and title context may solve your problem...again, a word of caution, this can possibly lead to some really weird behavior. Cheng
