bad dist-upgrade - starting over

2002-05-21 Thread Eric Smith
Unfortunately on the way from potato to sid, my upgrade froze on
one of the main lib6 packages. Now I have a really disturbed
package database.

I don't care if I have to start from scratch by removing all
packages. What's the best and surest way to get a working
installation going - any distribution.

thanx

printcap setting for lexmark 100XL

I cannot get this printer to work when I boot into linux. With
the same hardware it works perfectly in windows. Other printers
I have no problem with from my Debian.

Anyone have any success with this printer?

aspelling an grammer checking

2001-12-18 Thread Eric Smith
Two questions in one ( I know it ain't good practice).

I was looking for a grammar checker in the unstable repository
- is there anything that will check for obvious errors silly ;)

While foraging I came across aspell and thought that might be a
good replacement for ispell, so installed it but get this:

Sorry, I can't read the file /usr/lib/aspell/english.

Then looked at the contents of the deb and saw this:

/usr/bin/aspell
/usr/bin/word-list-compress
/usr/bin/run-with-aspell
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/aspell
/usr/share/doc/aspell/copyright
/usr/share/doc/aspell/changelog.gz
/usr/share/doc/aspell/README.gz
/usr/share/doc/aspell/changelog.Debian.gz
/usr/share/man
/usr/share/man/man1
/usr/share/man/man1/word-list-compress.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/aspell.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/run-with-aspell.1.gz

There seem to be some files missing - what gives?

The easiest way is to edit /etc/filesystems and list vfat above msdos.
When you specify a type of auto, mount must try things (in some
order) to find one that works. For some reason it defaults to trying
msdos before vfat, it works, and you only get 8.3 characters. You can
specify a preferred order in /etc/filesystems and have it try vfat
 first.

excellent.

Wish the package maintainers would attend to these annoying

Re: sid - new lilo installed and boot error - SOLUTION?

Could some one please advise whether this is the best / safest
way to recover a bootable system?

backup the / partition.
reinstall a base system - upgrade this to sid - copy back
the / omitting /boot (I actually have /boot on another partition).

Thanks for an answer.

add a root= entry (or something to that effect)

enclosed is the relevant lilo.conf which does show the root fs

Re: new lilo installed and boot error

2001-11-28 Thread Eric Smith
According to Donald R. Spoon on Wed, Nov 28, 2001 at 04:28:17AM -0600:
See comments in your text copied below.

Thank you for a complete and very informative answer -

Well I have not managed to Fix the /boot for my 2.4 kernel,
i did manage for the previous 2.19 though.

I re-installed the kernel-image for 2.4, lilo and mbr The kernel-image
complained there was no mbr and I should reinstall that package but that did
not give me any mbr in the /boot dir.

I am now booting off a 2.19 floppy and have a reasonably working system as we
talk. I am sure it will all come right - its just burning a lot of time.

The error with 2.4:
request-module[block-major-3] root fs not mounted
VFS: cannot open root device 303 or 03:3
Please append a correct root= boot option
unable to mount root fs on 03:03

or some rant to that effect.

Then with some more uninstalling and reinstalling of the above 3 mentioned
packages in both kernel falcours i now get a flashing 40 40 over the screen
when I try to boot either kernel.

So why is this so difficult, I though a package install that you allow to
overwrite broken configurations just fixed things and worked ;)

Anyway FWIW, here are the tortured results of my efforts:

Yes. You will have to boot up using a rescue disk, mount /dev/hda3
and chroot to that mounted directory. You can then edit your
/etc/lilo.conf and re-run lilo to install the new (modified per below)
lilo to the MBR. Be careful... your paths will be all screwed up, so
use the FULL path to the file you want to run. This mainly applies to
running /sbin/lilo. Also, you may have limited choice of editors
available...hope you can run vi grin.

You can specify the address for each card on the kernel command line,
only if you compile the drivers into the kernel

or just switch the cables on the back of your box.

Its been quite a saga - I have lost my (limited) hacking instinct.
Having failed to get ipmasq to work on 2.2.19 (possibly something to do with
eth0 eth1 being reversed i.e. eth0 on LAN side), I am now on the 2.4.14
precompiled and
hoping for better things.

I want to get on with other things, no desire to config my own
kernel, compile modules, hack the interfaces file to switch eth{0,1}
... so, please can someone offer a simple solution out of the box
solution - all I want to do is give internet access to a connected machine.
Embarrasing when it is such a no-brainer to config winroute on a
blows box.

eth0 - eth1

2001-11-20 Thread Eric Smith
According to Daniel Serodio on Tue, Nov 20, 2001 at 07:20:01PM -0200:
If your NIC's are different, try creating a file in /etc/modutils (eg,
 'nic') with eg:

 alias eth0 ne2k-pci
 alias eth1 fealnx

Run 'update-modules'. Then 'apt-get install ipmasq'. That's how I do it
(actually, I compiled my own kernel, but this should work for any kernel
where the NIC's drivers are modules).
   Hope this helped.

It works out of the box if eth0 is external and eth1 is local.
In your case you have to modify the 00Interfaces(?sp I use iptables now)

that did not work for me - but this entry in modules.conf did:

### update-modules: start processing /etc/modutils/ethernet
alias eth0 rtl8139
alias eth1 3c59x

Now I have the eth0 pointing to the cable modem and eth1 to the lan as

But I still get this kernel pollution from ipmasq:

eth1 on the server gets internet access via cable modem via dhcpcd and the

Also the default ipmasq installation results in the following kernel

Oh,

So I adapted one of the given examples thusly:

 auto eth0 eth1
 iface eth0 inet dhcp
 pre-up /usr/share/doc/ifupdown/examples/check-mac-address.sh eth0
00:50:Fc:43:Cd:F0

00:50:04:11:F3:EB
  address 192.168.0.1
  netmask 255.255.255.0
  up /sbin/dhcpcd

But still cannot switch the cards after a reboot.

Anything wrong with the above?

DHCP Servr configuration

2001-11-10 Thread Eric Smith
I am attempting to set up a dhcp server and its going rather
slowly.

Would like to have the bare minimum config for a single networked
(windows) machine which I want to give internet access to from my
debian server.

The debian runs the dhcpcd and is configured thus by the ISP:
  inet addr:24.132.170.14 Bcast:24.132.171.255 Mask:255.255.254.0
So now this machine has internet access.

I configure eth0 as follows:
 ifconfig eth0 204.254.239.10 up

Here is the dhcp.conf which I had a go at:
---
option domain-name loots.com;

default-lease-time 600;
max-lease-time 7200;

subnet 128.164.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
  range 128.164.1.0  128.164.1.20;
  option broadcast-address 128.164.1.10;
}
---
I am sure the broadcast-address is wrong.

/usr/sbin/dhcpd eth0

This manages to configure the client windows machine and I
may telnet from it to the debian. To get internet access, however,
I experimented manually adding a default route (to both eth0
and eth1 of the debian). Nothing works to give the windows machine
internet access.

What could I be missing?

IRQ conflict on ethernet cards

2001-11-06 Thread Eric Smith
I have a RealTek and a 3com card which are both sharing the same irq
viz. /proc/interrups:

   CPU0
  0: 899149 XT-PIC timer
  1: 20820 XT-PIC keyboard
  2: 0 XT-PIC cascade
  6:106 XT-PIC floppy
  8: 1 XT-PIC rtc
 10: 0 XT-PIC eth0, eth1
 13: 1 XT-PIC fpu
 14: 90746 XT-PIC ide0
NMI: 0

Here is the grepped /proc/ioports:

f800-f87f : eth1
fc80-fcff : eth0

and part of the dmesg:

3c59x.c 18Feb01 Donald Becker and others
http://www.scyld.com/network/vortex.html
eth0: 3Com 3c905B Cyclone 100baseTx at 0xfc80, 00:50:04:11:f3:eb, IRQ 10
  8K byte-wide RAM 5:3 Rx:Tx split, autoselect/Autonegotiate interface.
MII transceiver found at address 24, status 7849.
Enabling bus-master transmits and whole-frame receives.
rtl8139.c:v1.07 5/6/99 Donald Becker
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html
eth1: RealTek RTL8139 Fast Ethernet at 0xf800, IRQ 10, 00:40:f4:2e:41:c8.
eth0: Initial media type Autonegotiate.
eth0: MII #24 status 7849, link partner capability , setting half-duplex.

I can get both eth0 and eth1 to work (support a network connection)
strangely but not simultaneously, although modprobe only works on eth0
and not eth1.

I did all I could on the simplistic CMOS that I have but I cannot
allocate IRQ specifically to ports. I also ran the reltek dos
diagnostics and setting utility and all is fine but I cannot
change the IRQ from 10 with it.

How do I manually force the IRQ to be different on the two cards?

Thank you.

Re: IRQ conflict on ethernet cards - a solution

2001-11-06 Thread Eric Smith
According to Oleksandr Moskalenko on Tue, Nov 06, 2001 at 12:05:43PM -0500:

Eric, I had such a problem and solved it by changing the IRQ on a 3Com
card. Their diagnostics and install floppy works wonders in most cases.
Have you tried that one? This is the way that I've seen advised on this
 list many times.

Thanx to you and schnobs - good answers.

I solved the problem soon after sending the email by disabling
irq 10 in the bios, then one card caught irq 9 and the other 4 -
I thought there was meant to be some science in this stuff ;)

ciao
