resources you need to touch in order to get the color combination you

From my personal experience, aptitude works much better if you use it as
your package manager since the moment you install Debian than if you
migrate to it after some time of using apt.

Usually the debian menu will be there, if it's not you'll have to look
at the wm docs and learn how to tell the menu where to find the menu
entries.
To add the wm to gdm check /usr/share/xsessions .
