Re: Need help to install gnucobol

2023-04-18 Thread Jerry Mellon

Hi,

I am new to Debian and I would like to install gnucobol. I see it is in
Debian 10 but not 11. I tried to download the Debian 10 gnucobol, but I
get a message that the package is broken. Could you tell me where else I
might obtain a compatible cobol compiler?

All,
New drive install this morning, appears tobe functioning without a
problem. I had some hicups with the fstab file at to the layout, but got
it after some head scratching as to the layout of the file.

Again thanks to all for the great help.

Yes, or stranger things -- which is why 'cat /proc/partitions'

Re: Add a hard drive to existing system??

2021-01-17 Thread Jerry Mellon
Hi,
The Asus that I have is G75V series. It has 2 hdd bays onboard. The
500mv is the drive that is current installed and Debian 10.7 is
installed. I have purchased another 2T Segate drive that will go into
the empty bay.

I don't want to do anything fancy, just install and update fstat. The
question is what do I do in fstat to set it up. Currently the fstab file
reads as follows.

Disk /dev/sda: 465.8 GiB, 500107862016 bytes, 976773168 sectors
Disk model: ST9500325AS
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x0d0d6868

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sda1 * 2048 951703551 951701504 453.8G 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 951705598 976771071 2506547412G 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 951705600 976771071 2506547212G 82 Linux swap /
Solaris

Do I set the new drive as /dev/sda6 , 7 , 8 and would it be a
single partition?

As always any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Jerry

Re: Debian 10 64bit

2020-12-18 Thread Jerry Mellon

Well all I can say is, it works.

The Disks I purchase were from https://ShopLinuxOnline.com/ . Received
16disk and did not have any problems with them. They were all marked
Debian 10.6 Buster 64 Bit(amd64) with the Debian Logo.

I am the only user on my laptop, an ASUS gaming machine Core i7. I gave
up on Windows 10 after one of the so called updates corrupted the system
so bad I could even boot. So I switched to Linux and I am learning a
lot, mostly from the Debian-user list.

Thanks again.

Debian 10 64bit

2020-12-14 Thread Jerry Mellon
I finally got around to installing debian 10 on my 64bit system(thus
removing the i386version I had originally instaled). The install went
well and I asked for a seperate Home particion. When I booted the system
and try to do "apt-get update and apt-get upgrade" using "sudo" it would
not let me do that. Said I was not a sudo user. I then tried "su root"
which failed as well as it said I was not a sudo user. I went to the
sudouse file and changed it to make me a user. Sudo as myself worked
fine but su root still did not work.

After seeing the email concering problems with sudo and su root I
decided to reload. I did but did a use whole disk (no home part).
After booting I did have to go to the sudouser file an change it again
but the su root worked with out a problem.

Only saying all of this because of the email chatter on sudo and su
root.

Thanks for the attention a great info.
