Dovecot does not require mysql. The dovecot-common package
*recommends* dovecot-mysql. Apt installs recommended packages by
default, but they are not required. You can exclude recommended
packages with --no-install-recommends. The only technical downside to
having mysql-common and libmysqlclient16 is about 5KB of disk space.

The 295.40 driver suffers from performance regressions on GeForce
6xxx/7xxx, see #668854?. ?Upgrading to 295.49 in unstable should help.

This doesn't fix the bug that causes the slow tab switching in Chrome.
The following fixes it for me:

nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=0

This needs to be ran each time X starts. I haven't tried to find a
permanent fix yet.

The command cp * will not recurse into directories without -r or -a

Perhaps missing from Lenny, but the arp manpage in squeeze include
information on it.

- -f filename, --file filename
Similar to the -s option, only this time the address info is
taken from file filename. This can be used if ARP entries for a
lot of hosts have to be set up. The name of the data file is
very often /etc/ethers, but this is not official. If no filename
is specified /etc/ethers is used as default.

The format of the file is simple; it only contains ASCII text
lines with a hostname, and a hardware address separated by
whitespace. Additionally the pub, temp and netmask flags can be

Looks like this bug was reported on the avahi upstream mailing list [1].

The person responding indicates a kernel problem, which makes sense when
you actually get a kernel panic as a result. This was also indicated on
this list.

The 'reportbug' tool will include quite a bit of information for you in
the report, so adding additional logs to the bug report may not even be
needed.

However, it appears that the log you included was the custom kernel you
attempted to use as directed by the others on this list. Make sure you
when you report the bug, you include relevant logs for the kernel
packaged by Debian.

Disabling support for ipv6 can actually be done via a kernel parameter,
so recompiling to remove ipv6 support should not be needed. Use the
kernel parameter ipv6.disable=1.

Good luck!

critical - makes unrelated software on the system (or the whole system)

No errors in the xorg.conf. However, I see that your initial error was
reported as a bug: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=586025

The maintainer indicated that the required steps are described in
/usr/share/doc/gsynaptics/README.Debian.

If you find that your answer is not there, I would provide feedback to
the bug report.

If you are looking for something to get the macro keys to work, I would
try g15macro. I would guess most of the g15 utilities should work fine

For the majority of packages, this is already the case. There are
exceptions, when packages have large amounts of documentation they can
be split into a separate -doc package (eg. aptitude-doc-en). AFAIK,
there is no easy to way to handle automatic installation of the -doc
packages.

need a 2.6.33 kernel, I suggest you install Squeeze rather than Lenny.

This is backwards. The udev in squeeze requires a newer kernel with
CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED=n . The squeeze kernel works fine in lenny, and
is even available in Lenny backports. You just can not go the other way
around (Lenny kernel on a squeeze machine).

The .32 kernel is also available in the kmuto Lenny installer.

I am a regular help on the Debian IRC channel, and I can say that I am
not sure unetbootin works for anyone. I have tested once myself, and I
had the same issue has the floods of users on IRC. failed to find cdrom

Yes, the java alternatives command just groups multiple alternatives
into links into basically three categories (sun, gcj, and openjdk).
Selecting one should update all java-related alternatives to that

I am not sure the exact reason, but I am betting on something along the
lines of the usb stick being formatted in a non-UNIX filesystem, such as
vfat. I know this is often the case when preserving permissions, which
you are not... So perhaps the time preservation?

Jordan, what do you mean by time preservation? The time of the file is the

That was really a shot in the dark with that statement. I had hoped
someone with more insight would chime in with more information. Anyways,
my thought was that modification time on UNIX filesystems were different
in way that rsync fails to preserve the modification time when copying
to vfat.

An easy way to check this would be to compare the modification times of
the two copies.

For this, you will want to check the BTS and changelog of the package to
see if there is a reason that it is not included. If you don't find a
reason, it should be safe to file a bug. If you do find a reason, you
could file a minor bug against the documentation.

In this case I can see that it is Contents-i386.gz (apt-file), but the

Does this break functionality of the package?

user). It would be best if this is done in a testing environment,
outside of the actual production machine.

For me it something that I just cringe to see. I realize that in

This reads like a bug report (with some missing information). Are you
trying to ask why it segfaults?

What version of samba-common or samba-common-bin (backports only)? What
about libc6? Have you been mixing releases?

The rest are less useful, and generally imply a limited, incomplete,
or flawed understanding of one or more of the tools you are using.

I no longer configure my machines in a way that it allows a user to gain
full root via sudo. However, when I did, I found sudo -i to be more
appropriate than sudo su which seems to be more like su -l. Of
course, you could always do sudo su -l.

- From the manpage:

- -i The -i (simulate initial login) option runs the shell specified in
the passwd(5) entry of the user that the command is being run as.
The command name argument given to the shell begins with a ‘-’ to
tell the shell to run as a login shell. sudo attempts to change to
that user’s home directory before running the shell. It also ini‐
tializes the environment, leaving TERM unchanged, setting HOME,
SHELL, USER, LOGNAME, and PATH, and unsetting all other environment
variables. Note that because the shell to use is determined before
the sudoers file is parsed, a runas_default setting in sudoers will
specify the user to run the shell as but will not affect which
shell is actually run.

Nobody has any right to monitor somebody else without consent or a
warrant. This is a very grey area companies play in and one the supreme
court and others are trying to address and have been trying to address.
In some states (especially the state I'm in) even monitoring your kids
or wifes activities can cross the line into being criminal, if you're
not careful, especially if you break some kind of encryption to do so.
 I'm no lawyer.

You also have to look at it from this perspective. Its his home and his
network. He may be held liable for things that pass in and out of that
network. If the user is engaging in illegal activities, it will be the
OP's internet who gets cut off (and potentially worse).

Not that monitoring will really help this scenario, as the damage will
have already been done.

I would recommend locking the network down over a monitoring solution.
Not only will it can it be more effective, but it does not require the
invasion of privacy. You can use a web proxy, such as squid, to
whitelist allowed sites.

A quick google search turned up this that looks interesting:

Try the kmuto[1] installers. They have up-to-date kernels that are more
likely to support new hardware. If that is the case, just install the
lenny-backports kernel after installation is complete.

 Hi,

some months ago. I had numerous problems because of RH (I don't like RH
 at all, actually).

I often install Debian on different computers, but I noticed, this time
(I'm using a netinst, as always), that, as always, in the partitioning,
it asks for `what you want to mount where.' That is, you can choose, for
 every partition, the `mount point.'

First, I always found the `mount point' expression weird in this
context, because, for me, the mount point _is_ always the partition,
during the installation, but this is not the problem.

The biggest problem is that you are able to choose between, say, `/',
 `/var/', '/usr/', `/home/', etc. But, without thinking a lot, `/'
*habitually* contains the rest. So, mounting say `/' on hda1, and
`/home/' on hdb1 could appear as weird for the user, at first glance (only).

What do you think about this? (I'm known for my outlandish ideas, so,
don't be angry if I'm wrong.)

IIRC the guided partitioning recommends a single / partition for new
users. What would you suggest is changed?

between the `/' as it is normally in Linux filesystems, and the `/' in
the installation process, which is actually everything except what was
asked to be put on other partitions.

I don't understand where the difference is. The installer treats it the
same as a Linux system would. / would contain all files and directories
that are not located inside of another mounted partition. I don't see a
distinction to make? When you are selecting mountpoints, you can just
think of that as a TUI for fstab configuration.

What would you suggest to present the user differently?

Stable volatile versions

2010-06-24 Thread Jordan Metzmeier
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Last night I was attempting to install spamassassin on my Lenny box. I
had some difficulty doing so because it turned out that the volatile
version had a lesser version number.

The only ways I found to get the volatile version to install was to pin
the volatile repo to 1000. I then found that this is the same case
with tzdata. Here are examples:

tzdata:
  Installed: 2010a-0lenny1
  Candidate: 2009l-0lenny1.1
  Version table:
 *** 2010a-0lenny1 0
500 http://ftp.grokthis.net lenny/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2009l-0lenny1.1 0
   1001 http://volatile.debian.org lenny/volatile/main Packages

spamassassin:
  Installed: 3.2.5-2+lenny1.1~volatile1
  Candidate: 3.2.5-2+lenny1.1~volatile1
  Version table:
 3.3.1-1~bpo50+1 0
  1 http://ftp.backports.org lenny-backports/main Packages
 3.2.5-2+lenny2 0
500 http://ftp.grokthis.net lenny/main Packages
 *** 3.2.5-2+lenny1.1~volatile1 0
   1001 http://volatile.debian.org lenny/volatile/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Why are volatile versions made in a way so that using them is a
downgrade? Is it possible that a Lenny point-release has obsoleted a
volatile version of a package?

Something just did not seem right about this...

Why are you still running etch? Etch is no longer supported.

You want exec startxfce4 in your ~/.xinitrc. On Lenny (possibly also
etch) you can make this global with update-alternatives --config
x-session-manager.

In this case, because the fix is in the same upstream version, I would

backport the squeeze version yourself.

is that enough? or the system logs somewhere else?

Can anyone post a link, to a good howto, how to:

 - turn off logging to console
 - turn off logging to files [/var/log/messages]
 - turn off all logging

Reason: because Lenny is not on a normal HDD, so i don't want to write
to often. And i don't need any logging on it.

 Thank you!

chmod -x is not the proper way to disable a startup service. I recommend
using sysv-rc-conf, which has an easy-to-use interface.

Not all applications use syslog and will need to be disabled on a
per-application basis.

My only guess is that at the time Lenny froze, pidgin had not yet
implemented support. Backports are fairly safe, especially for desktop
systems IMO. You will also find that some of the protocols (yahoo IIRC),
is broken in the Lenny pidgin due to the service changing their protocol.

I recommend grabbing it from backports.

This makes me fear for next versions of iceweal and icedove...

Sunbird from upstream likely comes in statically-linked binaries. This
means the required libs would be included in the .tar.gz they distribute.

I am sure someone else can explain static linking much better than I
can, as I only have a basic understanding.

Have you tried using locate? locate builds a database of files (using

IMO find is best used when you want to perform some action on the files

I use ssh to access the guests. This is not necessarily a limitation of
Debian's package, but a limitation of the OSE version. You can get the
proprietary version from upstream (free non-commercial use):

What does one do now, run update-rc.d as before and then

I am not sure how dependency based booting changes things, but the

Please note that this program was designed for use in package main‐
tainer scripts and, accordingly, has only the very limited functional‐

to use update-rc.d to manage runlevels. They should edit the links
directly or use runlevel editors such as sysv-rc-conf and bum instead.

I would try one of the alternatives.

The option will likely be the --force-confmiss dpkg option.

From the IRC bot:

The reason you have to use dpkg --force-confmiss is because whenever
your config files (conffiles) are gone, dpkg assumes you deleted them
on purpose, and that you want them to stay deleted. You can also
reinstall them using the following apt-get line: apt-get -o

using aptitude, aptitude -o DPkg::Options::=--force-confmiss reinstall

Sorry about splitting this into two emails, but the reason that it wants
to remove those packages is because they are automatically installed
either via recommends or depends. You can mark them as manually
installed with aptitude unmarkauto package. Sometimes you can easily
unmark many packages at once with aptitude keep-all (by removing the
package with dpkg so that the other actions are pending as far as
aptitude is concerned).

You can however do almost the equivalent of an emerge world in Gentoo. You

two yellow ports? If so, plug your drives in the orange ports to use

the vast amount of options traditionnally present in a DFI LanParty

The ICH10R only provides 6 SATAII ports, and the JMicron controller is
there to provide 2 additionnal ports.

Yes, the PLUS is the correct model. I will have to look into it again,
but I have 3 drives so they could not all be in the two yellow ports.
This may also explain why fdisk lists my drives in the order: sdc, sdb,
sda. Running lspci -k, I don't recall seeing ata_piix at all.

Thanks for the input, I will have another look tonight.

Re: Unable to connect to my home wireless

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you don't actually set
preferences to install recommends. This is now the Debian default. You have
to explicitly turn them off if you don't want them.

To avoid this, you should place these lines in /etc/apt/apt.conf:

APT::Install-Recommends 0;
APT::Install-Suggests 0;

I agree -- recommends are not depends, and they should not be automatic. And
yet they are.

(Also note that I have the above lines in my apt.conf and I *still* got
network-manger.)

James

The IRC bot in #debian has this to say about why recommends:

From lenny onwards, apt-get and aptitude both install Recommended
packages by default. From policy section 7.2, Recommends, declares a
strong, but not absolute, dependency. The Recommends field should list
packages that would be found together with this one in all but unusual
installations. You're not that unusual, trust us. By not installing
recommended packages, you will be missing functionality.
