Dovecot does not require mysql. The dovecot-common package *recommends* dovecot-mysql. Apt installs recommended packages by default, but they are not required. The command cp * will not recurse into directories without -r or -a to enable recursion. The * is expanded by the shell and is passed as arguments to the command. The person responding indicates a kernel problem, which makes sense when you actually get a kernel panic as a result. This was also indicated on this list. The 'reportbug' tool will include quite a bit of information for you in the report, so adding additional logs to the bug report may not even be needed. However, it appears that the log you included was the custom kernel you attempted to use as directed by the others on this list. Make sure you when you report the bug, you include relevant logs for the kernel packaged by Debian. Disabling support for ipv6 can actually be done via a kernel parameter, so recompiling to remove ipv6 support should not be needed. Use the kernel parameter ipv6.disable=1. Good luck! Note that because the shell to use is determined before the sudoers file is parsed, a runas_default setting in sudoers will specify the user to run the shell as but will not affect which shell is actually run. - -- Jordan Metzmeier -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.9 (GNU/Linux) iQIcBAEBCAAGBQJMUazIAAoJEKj/C3qNthmTW7EQANHKUy7UW/YWxax3W5Z6C9nF T+0JP2a79FlwaQABCP3+0CLWlk4QGB+Oa9UqnttQP6SjE5dLz8oA27tJO2NQTAe+ /ZeiFFnAF3jAOlG7BTDxl4QolPJgqZ6cOkp8qcRSdOJdFDrvmk0NeF9JszRl8Amn 5LqnI0M8GVRvsdutDn50bEyi4LO3rLKsSEQuZNYl45tVRFjFB9ZgaAuINbj4FDF/ yya3NMT11B1ApSzwAWg1HZ8myTxIklJxJc3Hk/gfBsmdhfLtI0egxY4q5yJ7iuvx Q1mOFef2zrvT9l2fnxyplHCbMlgugwvAiTgZE9YBr3U1NGo85jCNVLjY9r2auh5+ hnz+uWflwi4y0bDiUiQnzJvnlM80NImyblyiqhY1FiOu7/D+Q94dWfhUEGcXxN+M rApuz+CCYjoHIxMV28nOIxtIYhlmXRnLjKh2OTTDzZqQXOdYKaxBS+k5l4n+jjfm LbZqlpAuOlXncgPn1BiB81f3nbthPsdGeCi14PF/5HjgqGpdOyy7lN14WOyWbzPO ny7UbY/knlJy+bdwFUQNMzXkpuEW57dB60KuAPlaoAf4VVCHME2nl7XJulwcM3Pw LTiM5phh4XrzPvEifzWI8fQhLbccCweHNy0tGbyaLlDwizbgzNTs0aojuYZSiWi7 L7L+ToFAZ1QSOLwcPEXY =9EEK -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. This is a very grey area companies play in and one the supreme court and others are trying to address and have been trying to address. In some states (especially the state I'm in) even monitoring your kids or wifes activities can cross the line into being criminal, if you're not careful, especially if you break some kind of encryption to do so. I'm no lawyer. You also have to look at it from this perspective. Its his home and his network. He may be held liable for things that pass in and out of that network. If the user is engaging in illegal activities, it will be the OP's internet who gets cut off (and potentially worse). Not that monitoring will really help this scenario, as the damage will have already been done. I would recommend locking the network down over a monitoring solution. Not only will it can it be more effective, but it does not require the invasion of privacy. You can use a web proxy, such as squid, to whitelist allowed sites. Our software consists of 4 packages, 3 real ones, lets call then package1, package2 and package3 and a overall package that exists to bring in the three packages at a specific version to make a overall version of our system - gets call that package-system. The local repository consists of many versions of each of the four packages. When asking apt to install the very latest version of package-system, everything works just as it should. But when asking apt to install a specific older version of package-system (which we sometimes need to do), apt complains and says the dependencies cannot be met. Assume we have What about a system similar to say, debian kernels. You can add the versions to the package names so they become distinct packages eg. package1-2.1.88. I had numerous problems because of RH (I don't like RH at all, actually). I often install Debian on different computers, but I noticed, this time (I'm using a netinst, as always), that, as always, in the partitioning, it asks for `what you want to mount where.' That is, you can choose, for every partition, the `mount point.' First, I always found the `mount point' expression weird in this context, because, for me, the mount point _is_ always the partition, during the installation, but this is not the problem. The biggest problem is that you are able to choose between, say, `/', `/var/', '/usr/', `/home/', etc. But, without thinking a lot, `/' *habitually* contains the rest. So, mounting say `/' on hda1, and `/home/' on hdb1 could appear as weird for the user, at first glance (only). What do you think about this? (I'm known for my outlandish ideas, so, don't be angry if I'm wrong.) IIRC the guided partitioning recommends a single / partition for new users. I don't understand where the difference is. The installer treats it the same as a Linux system would. / would contain all files and directories that are not located inside of another mounted partition. I don't see a distinction to make? Re: Unable to connect to my home wireless
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you don't actually set preferences to install recommends. This is now the Debian default. You have to explicitly turn them off if you don't want them. To avoid this, you should place these lines in /etc/apt/apt.conf: APT::Install-Recommends 0; APT::Install-Suggests 0; I agree -- recommends are not depends, and they should not be automatic. And yet they are. (Also note that I have the above lines in my apt.conf and I *still* got network-manger.) James The IRC bot in #debian has this to say about why recommends: From lenny onwards, apt-get and aptitude both install Recommended packages by default. From policy section 7.2, Recommends, declares a strong, but not absolute, dependency. The Recommends field should list packages that would be found together with this one in all but unusual installations. You're not that unusual, trust us. How did you manage to, under Th. 3? I don't remember exactly, but I believe somewhere the was an option to accept the security exception permanently. Thanks. I just verified, and it is surely not implemented in my Icedove's version. I should get the new one (which is not in stable branch, evidently). You are better off using the upstream tarball of thunderbird then trying to backport Icedove from squeeze/lenny. Install to your homedir or /opt. As long as your user has write perms to file, it has an update manager that can upgrade itself (somewhat eliminating the need for package management). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: Launch some command and leave the console, the command still being executed

(This is also the case with `gedit', which is not astonishing.) Is it even possible? Thanks folks. You want something more like: `gedit disown`. The disown will detach all background jobs currently attached to the terminal session. This _might_ be specific to BASH since it is a BASH builtin. Also, you may want to look into tools like GNU Screen. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Re: Lenny to Squeeze upgrade problems
This issue is because the new udev requires a .31 kernel with sysrq_deprecated=n (I am going off memory here so don't quote me). This means you need to first upgrade to the squeeze kernel, reboot, then upgrade udev and proceed with the updgrade. -- Jordan Metzmeier

You want i386 (32bit) or amd64 (64bit). There are still minor issues with 64bit desktops.
