Well, I solved this. I decided to leave the laptop alone for a while. After doing this, I had another go at installing Debian, and it found both network devices (the Broadcom and the wireless), and the Debian Installer obtained the non-free driver for the wireless that I provided on my usb-stick.

Well, I solved it. Apparently this happens when the serial speed is set too low. So, after setting it at 115200, from 9600, and after restarting my computer, it now syncs. I discovered this tidbit at Debian bug #396751. So, anyway, all is well now, and I can now get organized. Mark -- To
