Help with compiling X 4.2.0

2002-03-19 Thread Matt Jones

I am trying to compile X so that I can use my Geforce2 video card.
I am running debian 2.2r2 and did a clean install yesterday.
I put the source code on the drive and began compiling. The make World
worked fine, but when I did make Install I recieved the following errors...

...
rm -f gunzip.o
gcc -c -O2 -fno-strength-reduce -ansi -pedantic -Wall -Wpointer-arith
-I../../../include/fonts -I../include -I../../../programs/Xserver/include
-I../../../include -I../../.. -I../../../exports/include -Dlinux
-D__i386__ -D_POSIX_C_SOURCE=199309L -D_POSIX_SOURCE -D_XOPEN_SOURCE
-D_BSD_SOURCE -D_SVID_SOURCE -D_GNU_SOURCE -DFUNCPROTO=15 -DNARROWPROTO
-DFONTDIRATTRIB -DBUILD_SPEEDO -DBUILD_TYPE1 -DBUILD_CID
-DBUILD_FREETYPE
-DFONT_ENCODINGS_DIRECTORY=\/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings/encodings.dir\
  -DX_GZIP_FONT_COMPRESSION gunzip.c

make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/matt/xc/lib'
make[1]: *** [install] Error 2

How can I fix this error, or is it an error I can fix?
Does anyone know what this means?

Thanks

Make sure you enable initrd when you are doing the xconfig. It is not
something that stands out greatly and I missed it a few times. After
enabling the initrd I was able to compile with no problems at all.

kernel 2.4.7 questions

2001-08-08 Thread Matt Jones

Hello,
I would like to update my kernel and I have tried before and it wouldn't
work because of the initrd problem that seems to be rather common. What
exactly needs to be done? I have found Howtos for redhat and others but they
do not work. Is there a Debian kernel howto?
I last tried upgrading the kernel just after 2.4.6 came out and ended up
reinstalling everything because nothing worked.

I have a P3 733mHz with an Adaptec 2940u2b scsi and a Matrox G450, the dist
that I have is potato 2.2r2 if that helps any.

Another problem I have is updating the packages. I do not have a web
connection, so I would have to download everything on to zip from school and
bring it home. How can I get apt-get to find the packages on the zip disk?

Thanks in advance,
Matt

kernel 2.4.6

2001-07-17 Thread Matt Jones
I have a problem. I have been trying to get the recent version of the kernel
into my box. I am a relatively new user so I have not done this before. I
used a kernel-update guide and followed all the directions and everything
worked fine until I rebooted. When I did it gave me the following message:

...
VFS: Cannot open root device 800 or 08:00
Please append a correct root= boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:00

I have not changed much in lilo.conf except the name of the new kernel, but
the system can no longer find something or I have done something wrong.

Matrox G450 and X

2001-06-29 Thread Matt Jones

Hi,
I tried to install Debian on my P3 box. Everything went well, anXious
detected the video card, but when I started X it was in 16 colors. I used
xf86config to change the default server to the SVGA rather than the VGA16,
and now the screen gets all screwed up and then it freezes and I cannot do
anything except reboot.

Is there any way I can config so that X will work with my video card? Or do
I need to go pull my Mach64 out of my other box?

Thanks
