IP Chains question

2002-01-31 Thread Matt Kopishke
I have set up a firewall using ipchains and the bridge patch
(bridgein) under potato (2.2.19). The one snag I had was although the
firewall works well only letting the world see certain ports (80 443),
it doesn't let the servers behind the firewall get out. I set up a rule
that allows all traffic that originated behind the firewall out, but
because we only have a couple of ports open, and we have no clue what port
the reply packets are going to come on, the reply packets get denied.

I was wondering if there is any way to mark out going packets so we can
let them through on their way back?

Thanks,

Matt

Exim Errors

2001-03-12 Thread Matt Kopishke
Hi, I keep getting errors like this:

Mar 12 09:42:56 Jekyll exim[7309]: 2001-03-12 09:42:56 14cTXE-0001tt-00
Cannot open main log file /var/log/exim/mainlog: Too many open files in

This is on our main email server, which gets hit pretty hard. Does 2.4 up
the open file limit?

Two nics, two networks question

Multiple Nics/ Net Connections

2000-10-19 Thread Matt Kopishke
Hi, I seem to be having some very odd Nic/Net connection problems.
What I have is a server with 2 Nics. One (eth0) is plugged into a cable
modem that we are planing on using as a back up connection. The other
(eth1) is plugged into our T1 and is our main connection. The problem is
that when I enable the T1's card (eth1) we can't get to the cables device
any more from the T1 side. It's acting as if there is some weird internal
routing going on, but there isn't from what I can tell.

Any ideas?

Exim and multiple domains

2000-10-13 Thread Matt Kopishke
Hi, I have a machine that is serving multiple domains. What I need to
have is some sort of separate configuration for each domain. Or what I
am really getting at is that I need a separate aliases file
(/etc/aliases) for each domain, and some sort of control over who gets
mail from a given domain. (I hope this is not to confusing...)

Firewall Box

2000-09-13 Thread Matt Kopishke
Hi, I need to implement a firewall at work. It will be for the most part
a pretty simple set up. I am going to set one of our Linux Boxes between
the Router and the Switch. The Box has 3 NICs, one for the router side,
one for the switch, and one for a backup cable connection. We have a
block of IPs, and we will need to get to machines behind the firewall from
the out side so I don't want to use ipmasq. What I plan on doing is just
using ipchains to shutoff any unused ports, and strip the box of any
questionable software (ie ssh instead of telnet). Has any one tried such a
set up? And if they have could you pass on any pointers or things to
watch out for? I also see there are a few packages out there to aid
setup, how well do they work?

Thanks,

Raid 1 Problems

2000-08-15 Thread Matt Kopishke
Hi, I am running potato and a 2.2.16 kernel on our file server. I
have two raid 1 devices set up, each 10 gigs big. The problem is that it
does not seem to cleanly unmount/update the superblock when I
restart/shutdown (although it says it does). So what happens is each
startup it needs to run chkraid, which on two 10 gig md devices, takes a
while.

Back up ideas???

2000-07-24 Thread Matt Kopishke
Hi, I am trying to set up a flexable backup system. This requires that
the software is multi-platform (Win 98/NT/2000 Linux and maybe MacOS),
and it (the server) must be easy to access remotely. What I have now is a
decent Machine Running Linux with a lot of disk space. What I would like
to do is have every one make a backup of the work they are doing daily,
then I can burn a cd weekly for an archive. Is there any thing out there
right now that can do this type of job.

Thanks,

HD Troubles

2000-07-07 Thread Matt Kopishke
Hi, I have been having a odd hd problem.

I have a machine that has 2 Promise Ultra 66 cards installed plus the
on board interfaces. The first card (hde - hdg) works fine. The second
card (hdi - hdl) on the other hand does not. When booting the kernel
finds the card, and the hard drive attached and sees the partition on
it. When I go to format the partition it says that the device is not
configured. fdisk also fails. The devices are there (in /dev), I created
them with MAKEDEV after installing the card.

This is a bit frustrating, it seem like it should work!

Thanks,

Demand Dialing with pppd and ipmasq

2000-06-06 Thread Matt Kopishke
Hi, we are trying to set up a box that acts as a router for our office. I
have ppp and ipmasq working. When I configure ppp to demand dial (the demand
and idle options in /etc/ppp/peers/provider) we seem to run into
problems. I start pppd with pon, but when I want to activate the dial up
(ping a ip etc) nothing happens (ie no dial out). A ping gives us a not
permitted error.

Thanks,

Is there a smart mirror?

2000-03-27 Thread Matt Kopishke
I currently maintain a small debian mirror for a local computer user group.
I run mirror daily to keep up with the latest version of potato and
woody. We have one problem, mirror is quite good at getting the newest
packages, but it keeps the old ones. This is quite a problem if you are
working with limited disk space. So, what I am asking, is there a smart
mirror like program out there?

Thanks,

Video For Linux

1999-09-01 Thread Matt Kopishke
Does any one have any experence with video4linux, or really what I am
looking for is bttv. I have a ADS Tech Channel surfer (w/o the radio), it
has a BT848 chip set. I tried the drivers in the 2.2.12 kernel with out
any luck (I am using xawtv out of potato), I then grabed the latest source
from the BTTV home page
(http://www.thp.uni-koeln.de/~rjkm/linux/bttv.html). I did not edit the
makefile because my card was not listed, so I just compiled, and installed
the modules. Now I have video, but it's BW, and I don't have sound (this
could be a OSS problem?). I have made all the odvous changes in xawtv
(set every thing to NTSC and Cable) but I still have only BW, sound less
video, can some one help?

Phantom Port problems

1999-08-24 Thread Matt Kopishke
We have a server set up that does IP-Masq and Firewalling for a internal
office network. The odd thing is that it has been broadcasting on port
1033 to 255.255.255.255:1478 (the world ?). There is no entry for ether
in /etc/services and lsof can't find any thing runing on those ports, but
syslog seems to tell a different story. It seems to run in spurts, both
the broadcast and the listen right one right after the other.

I had this problem, it is when I upgraded to a new machine, but I used the

What ended up being the culprit, was my video card, wich ran w/o a hich

with a new one, and haven't had a problem since... Barrow a card from

Rather Odd freeze ups (and more :)

1999-04-07 Thread Matt Kopishke
I have a not so related Linux question (with the exception that I run
Linux) about some really weird, hard, lockups. Here's the deal:
I had a ageing Cyrix 586/120 that started to seem *really* slow. Any how,
I bought a Abit-BH6 Board, a Intel Celeron 300A, some PC-100 RAM, and used
the following hard ware from my old machine : A S3 Trio 64v+ video card,
Maxtor HD, and a 3.5 Floppy (there is other stuff, but I don't have it
installed to help trouble shoot). So, I plug every thing in and it works,
I Recompile my kernel for the PPro, ran some other CPU intensive apps,
every thing seemed great, and very quick. That is untill I ran netscape,
then the machine crashed (yes crashed!) hard. I can't restart it with the
good old ctlaltdel, I have to use the hardware rest switch, and then
I found out that other graphic intens apps did the same thing (Gimp,
Eterm, etc). It does the same thing in Win95 (I now 95 dies often, but
most of the time you can reset it with the ctlaltdel), and I am now
completly clue less what to do next.

What I have done:
I got mad, thought it was a HW problem, and sense the other stuff I had
from the other machine was running great untill the day I took it apart,
so I sent it all back, and recived new parts, but have all the same
problems. At this time, I am thinking video may be the problem, but any
suggestions would be greatly appreached, oh, and I am not overclocking
it...
Thanks,

-Matt-

Dumb X terminals

1998-08-08 Thread Matt Kopishke
Hi all, Here's the story:

We (A high school) just received a bunch of 486/66 Compaqs. The idea is
to turn them in to dumb X terminals (running StarOffice, and Netscape).
They have small hard drives (200mb), 16 md of RAM, 3 Comm Ethernet cards,
and vga (svga?) + Monitors. I was thinking that the base system could
sit on the drives, and maybe some of the X files (hehe, sorry). But when
xdm fires up X, I would like it to connect to our Linux server, (not the
local machine). Is this possible, can some give me a few pointers.
Thanks

DInstall will not partion

1998-08-08 Thread Matt Kopishke
Hello, I have been working on a machine for a week, trying to install
Hamm from a Cheap Bytes Beta CD (I Don't have the full release). First
of all I could not get it to boot from the rescue floppy that was on the
CD. So I downloaded the new (2.0.10) base files you would need to
install the base debian system from a dos partions (resc1440.bin,
base_2.0.tgz, drv1440.bin, loadlin.exe, linux, root.bin, install.bat)
threw them in a folder in the \ of c: (c:\linbase), dropped in to DOS
mode, ran install.bat, now I get all the way to dinstall! But now I
can't partions my drive (after setting up my keyboard) instead of
starting the partioning program it drops me right back in to the dinstall
right back were I was (add a Swap)! I have tried every thing, even
removing card (all I have is a graphics card). I had BO running, and had
it upgraded to Hamm using this CD, but I can't install. Help, I have
taxed my brain, done every thin I can think of, and nothing works!

My HW:

586/120
S3 Trio64
ne2000 10/baseT
Maxtor Diamond base drive

Some one, help would be appreciated (a lot!)

Weird Rescue Disk problems

1998-08-05 Thread Matt Kopishke
Hello, I am trying to do a fresh install of Hamm (2.0 Beta cd from Cheap
Bytes). My harware does not support cd booting, and I don't have dos
drivers for my CD rom, so I need to use a Rescue Disk to get thing going.
But I make the Disk from 1440.bin with Rawrite2, reboot, watch it load
root.bin, then load Linux but then I get this error (I included the last
line thatt was completed for references):

VFS: mounted root (minix filesystem)
Bug in Dynamic linker ld.so ../sysdeps/i386/dl-machines.h:
307:elf_machine_lazy_rel Assertion '!unexpected PLT reloc type' failed!

I installed Bo on this machine with out a hich, and had it upgraded to
Hamm using the same CD, but I wanted to do some re partioning, and now I
can't install Hamm on my new partions! This is a Cyrix 586, I have heard
of problems with the Cyrix's and floppys, could this be it, or is there
somthing wrong here?
Thanks,

-Matt-

1998-06-27 Thread Matt Kopishke
I have X (finally) working on my machine (bo), I am running FVWM2 and was
wondering what I do to add a pattern or color (prefer pattern) to the
desktop. I now you edit the fvwm.rc file, but what do I edit, what
format file do I use for the pattern, and were would I put it?

Re: a few more questions

1998-06-19 Thread Matt Kopishke
Could you help me with the following:

1. how can I, using Linux and X11 read e-mail from other people who send it
to me via my ISP (uses POP)

Try Pine, works for me.

2. What is a good soundcard which is $40-$50 that works well in Linux and
Win95?

No Idea.

3. Does Netscape 4 install correctly under Hamm? I would like to try to
install the .deb file containing this program but I know that it is an
installer, and when I had BO it complained about not being in some temp
dir. What if any, is the special config for this?

Sorry, haven't installed it yet.

Re: emacs *very slow* to launch

1998-06-17 Thread Matt Kopishke
This is the behavior I've come to expect from emacs. Eighteen
Megs And Constantly Swapping.
It's a huge app! What sort of hardware do you have? What version
of Emacs? I wouldn't run it on anything sub-pentium, myself.

I run Emacs on 586/120 an it seems very snappy... Mabe try fireing up
dselect and reinsalling it, or updateing it if there is a later verison.

XFree86 problems

1998-06-14 Thread Matt Kopishke
I have been having problems with X, the last time I installed Linux, I
installed the XFree86 packages that as far as I can see are required to
run X (the Standard Fonts, FVWM, the svga server, and what ever eles
dselect told me I needed), but after runinng XFree86Config, when it goes
to graphic mode, my screen goes crazy, it has many moving, blue lines,
and it even messes up the other terminals. Should I fire up dselect and
try to get a new (if ther is one) copy of XFree86, and if so what should
I get? Or use what I have and find out it was some stupid little thing I
for got/did not see?

Oak Tech SVGA card
