Subject: Fingerprint recognition (on power button)

I am thinking about buying a:

KUU-K2 14.1" IPS Screen All Metal Shell Champagne Gold Office Notebook Intel
Celeron Processor J4115 8GB DDR4 RAM 256GB SSD Windows 10 Laptop Computer with
Fingerprint Unlock Backlit Keyboard

https://www.newegg.com/champagne-gold-kuu-k2-
workstation/p/1TS-00BK-00024?Item=9SIANGPBUS2481

(Currently on sale for $306 with free shipping.)

The one potential problem that I see is that it (optionally?) allows locking
based on your fingerprint on, iiuc, the power button.

Does anybody (here) use or know much about fingerprint recognition? I'd prefer
not to enable that if it is an option or not supported in Debian -- it just
strikes me as another potential point of failure that I don't need.

Asides (that you don't need to read):

It meets most of my criteria (at least 8 GB RAM (I'd prefer more, I'll look
into expandability), reasonably fast (2.5GHz. 4 Cores and 4 Threads),
sufficient
size hard / ssd drive (128 GB would be sufficient), and type C USB port to plug
into a docking station that I already have.

(I'd prefer AMD as a processor, but ...)

(Aside: my intent would be to keep Windows 10 for the one application that I
use every 4 to 5 years (updating the map(s) in my Garmin GPS unit (even though
I know I can install a "free software" map instead). but basically to install
Buster to do some development that requires C++17, and, incidentally (if I am
successful with that development) possibly take the laptop to make
presentations at various sites.)

AFAIK, no one has ever died as a consequence of using an OS with systemd. So,
no,
you don't "have to" switch to another distro. You can do as most have done,
fondly
or not so fondly remember sysvinit, and accept the change, whether for better or
worse.

OTOH, would switching to Devuan really be "switching" to another distro? That's
like "switching" to any of the zillion distros based on Debian that include
Debian
repos in sources.list. They're mostly Debian but with different defaults,
different far more the interface than the guts that make Debian debian.

Hello Friends!

I'm running:
Kernel: 4.19.0-6-amd64 x86_64
bits: 64
Desktop: Xfce 4.12.4
Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)

My printer is an Epson L220. It's connected to my laptop's USB port.

The command lsusb shows:
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 04b8:08d1 Seiko Epson Corp.

Therefore in the file, /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf
I added this line:
usb 0x04b8 0x08d1

The printer can print just fine, but ImageScan and XSane would not run.

ImageScan says:
Could not send command to scanner. Check the scanner's status.

XSane says:
Failed to open device 'epkowa:usb:002:003':
Access to resource has been denied.

Thank you for your time!

Looks like xbindkeys is available in stable, but not in testing (though
it is still in sid).

According to https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/xbindkeys (and in particular
to
https://tracker.debian.org/news/1070102/xbindkeys-removed-from-testing/,
linked from there), this is because of bug #885239; that doesn't look
severe enough to warrant removal to my eye, but I'm far from the
greatest expert on such things.

Off topic it is indeed but... local ?
Gene have you got the slightest idea on how much who gets elected in the US and
his/her ideas and plans has impacts on the whole world ?
With such a great power it wouldn't be unfair to make everyone in the world
vote for the US president.

I have to play Sam Elliot here, John, reminding us that it took a special
kind of stupid to elect what we did elect in the last poll. From their
treatment of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, very few of the 537
winners deserve another chance to eat at the public trough.

But like all politics, this is local to us, here in the USA and off topic
fot the list.

What didn't click in mind for the first response I posted was that we
were possibly both talking about PNG files. My copy failed while
trying to click open then edit some Xfce4 printscreen PNG files by
right clicking from within Thunar file manager.

So the purging the other day meant I had to reinstall SOMETHING in
order to possibly help test why GIMP's upgrade failed. I decided to
reinstall the upgrade so I could next gain the skill of a hopefully
successful downgrade.

Reinstalling the buggy upgrade triggered TWO MORE package
downloads/upgrades just now: libgegl-common and libgegl-0.4-0. They
must have been the problem because my copy works for PNG, JPEG, and
XCF files all opened again from within Thunar.

So maybe that will help you now? If not, there's still always those
nice bug reporting directions that were in the COOL popup that *my*
copy presented, anyway.

PPPS Learned something else on the fly here: Installs WILL occur even
if specifically requested after apt-mark has been used to mark
something on hold. That's nice to know. It was a thumbs up since I DID
want to install a package while knowing that package had been
deliberately placed on momentary hold... purely because we can.

It was all about poking around under the Debian hood again since this
upgrade fail opportunity unexpectedly presented itself. I think this
may be the first package crash I've EVER experienced. Ditto on the
*thumbs up* for that because my email inbox hints that time span may
go back almost TEN YEARS. :)

S regarding my downgrade attempt the other day: If this Debian
wiki page is anywhere near correct, I keyed in the right command the
other day so I don't know WHY my GIMP downgrade attempt failed:

https://wiki.debian.org/RollbackUpdate

I'm going to tinker around with that again just for fun and 'cause it
left the taste of #FAIL in its tracks.

Hi MMIROJV,

Please report bugs in Kali Linux to the developers of Kali Linux.

This is a Debian user mailinglist - feel free to share _user_
experiences with other users here. That inlcudes experiences using
Debian in the derived form as redistributed by Kali Linux, but in that
case please beware that you are targeting a wider audience, so please
mention explicitly - in context, not only in subject - that you don't
use regular Debian.

So, dear list,

this is just a quick followup on discrimination practices employed by
GitHub.
Today it was brought to my attention that GitHub has restricted access
to users who live in countries that have US sanctions applied - [1].

Therefore, if somebody is still had any doubts that GitHub does not
respect software freedoms - leave any hope. GitHub is unsuitable for
hosting free software.

If someone is shoulder-surfing, and really wants the password, she will just
watch your fingers, Renato. Slightly harder but not hard, especially with
video cameras the size of a grape now being easily available.

I am aware that I am not really addressing the original poster's
question, but possibly helpful anyway:

I can suggest to consider options where typing a password is replaced by
presence of something physically, using packages like these:

libpam-biometric / libpam-fprintd - fingerprint
libpam-blue - bluetooth device
libpam-p11 / libpam-pkcs11 / libpam-poldi - smartcard
libpam-ssh-agent-auth - user-to-root access
libpam-yubico / libpam-u2f - hardware dongle
libpam-script - custom routine

I am curious which solutions you end up with for your father, as I am
working on streamined¹ setup of similar use cases.

I would also appreciate constructive² opinions and feedback from anyone
experienced with these various ways of sidestepping password-based
system login.

You forgot that Rasbian is Debian for Raspberry pi + Desktop autologin by

For the use his old father might do with a computer I think that cheap board
could do.
Plus, it's used by babies can be used by everyone.
Plus, it's ready out of the box for the use it's meant.
Plus can be customized for his father use like a tailored tuxedo (better in
some ways than a computer they are probably sharing).

If the machine is physically secure, I'd find out about automatic login
(aka autologin) to X (check the config of your display manager, you
might conceivably want to use a different displaymanager) .

For root access, check out man sudoers, the EXAMPLES section will get
you started, find out about NOPASSWD.

If the machine is NOT physically secure, think long and hard about what
you will do.

I think /bin/login isn't set up to allow that (at least that's what a cursory
reading of its man page tells me). I fear the only way for you would be to
modify its source and recompile...

Subject: How to have password shown?

Hi all...

Is there any a way to have my user-password shown when logging into Debian in
tty console, or also within X system when changing to root? It is for my old
father... it'd be easier for him to see what he's typing. In internet I found
some procedures to have asterisks shown; would it be possible to have a clear
text as well? Maybe it isn't as I understand...

Thanks for any help,

Cheers,

Rodolfo

That is preparation for updating the openjdk-8 package in *current* stable,
i.e.,
squeeze, rather than Buster.

I never installed it to begin with. And my primary browsing has been in
google-chrome-stable for quite some time now, mostly due to the fact that
at the time I switched over, Firefox's javascript performance was simply
too slow for the kinds of web games I was playing. Firefox's unilateral
out-of-nowhere decision to stop supporting the vast majority of user
add-ons wasn't a plus, either.

When I do youtube stuff in google-chrome-stable, it just works, and I've
never had to mess with anything other than un-muting and raising the
volume through alsamixer. At least not on my last couple systems.
(Before those, I had a system with on-board audio and a sound card, and
ALSA had to be beaten over the head to tell it which device to use.)

So, ALSA is definitely not perfection, but I've heard far more horror
stories from Pulse Audio users than from ALSA users.
