Any special reason to install lenny? The intel audio
 drivers have seen
some improvements until squeeze. Even if you need lenny,
 try the 2.6.32
 kernel from backports.

 Regards,

I have problem with squeeze too
The motherboard (with sound chip) works even in sarge
which use kernel 2.4

The mplayer/mencoder documentation has a detailed chapter
on ripping a dvd. It is really worth reading before

If I give enough details, can you help me out?

If my memory doesn't fail, there are only 2 directories in DVD, I copy them to
/mnt/dos4/1415

And I can use vlc to play by just specifying directory.

After conversion, I wish frame size is about 384x288. The film is 90 minute

be played in Windows and Linux.

Encoding DVD to a file is a complex subject.

The code below will do a two pass encode from your file to
 a 263 avi file.
When done it will play the file. You can ctrl-c to stop
 the encode at any
 time.

mencoder /mnt/dos4/1415 -oac mp3lame -ovc lavc -lavcopts
 vcodec=h263p:vhq:vbitrate=629:vpass=1 -vf
 scale=854:480,pullup -sid 0 -o
 /output.avi

mencoder /mnt/dos4/1415 -oac mp3lame -ovc lavc -lavcopts
 vcodec=h263p:vhq:vbitrate=629:vpass=2 -vf
 scale=854:480,pullup -sid 0 -o
 /output.avi

 mplayer /output.avi

You were specifying what size the output file should be,

specify the size of the input file yet. Thus he was asking
 you for the
size of the input file and other things because without

Since you suggest to someone trying to help you to read

Re: how to use mencoder to record TV program

2008-11-05 Thread Serena Cantor
I am too tired and let's end this thread. Thanks!

There is a long way to go to meet my goal:
1) the output is playable on Linux and Windows
2) the output is two to three megabytes per minutes, frame size is 384x288, my
CPU is P3/550

Replacing with -oac copy does not work. Audio still can't be heard after some
effort. All the switchs used by mencoder still seem foreign to me. Maybe I
should read mplayer manual. The learning curve is not smooth. Mplayer is in
beta stage, and a/v synchronization problem often occurs.

I am quite happy with helix producer that uses real media format. producer
works well in sarge (kernel 2.4) and meet my goal. So why should I try so hard
using mplayer?

ByeBye!!

 Serena Cantor wrote:

It works now though it has many programs! Thanks!!!

After running 2 sudo commands given by you, your
 mencoder command can
record. I don't copy sudo output, because 1st sudo
 merely says insmod
  snd-mixer-oss.ko and snd-pcm-oss.ko and 2nd sudo has
 no output at all,
  though I have /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer after running 2
 sudo. I change
/dev/dsp1 to /dev/dsp in your command, and run it. It
 records, and I can
hear TV audio. After about 15 seconds, I press Ctrl+C
 to end recording and
play output.avi. I find that TV audio is NOT recorded
 (TV video seems OK).
I have to add -vo x11 to mplayer
output.avi to play it. vlc player
can't play output.avi, even video is not shown.

So now you have video but no audio. right? But when you
 watch TV you hear
 sound.

may be try first instead -oac lame and -lameopts -oac copy.
 means replace

 '-oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=64'

 with

 '-oac copy'

I think though that the problem is another one, but try
 this first and tell
 me if it works.

If it's not working you may also try to add following
 to the tv driver line

 'forceaudio:immediatemode=1:forcechan=2:audiorate=44100:amode=1:audioid=1:adevice=/dev/dsp'

notice the forceaudio command and the immediatemode. The
 immediate mode
(look in man mplayer) is the option that we need I think.
We can try add alsa and replace adevice=/dev/dsp with
 adevice=hw=0.0 or
adevice=hw=0.1 I don't remember which was correct for
 capturing.

 'forceaudio:immediatemode=1:forcechan=2:audiorate=44100:amode=1:audioid=1:alsa:adevice=hw=0.0'

I'm not familiar with vlc, but after you manage to
 record your first video
with sound you can play with the different options of
 mencoder and try to
find a way that records or converts videos to something vlc
 would like.

When I record movie and check the file type with file it
 says

 file 20081014-201413.avi
 20081014-201413.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 720 x
 576, 25.00 fps,
video: FFMpeg MPEG-4, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 1 or 2 (stereo,
 48000 Hz)

I usually convert them after this with mencoder

 file 3SAT_Effesos.avi
 3SAT_Effesos.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 720 x
 576, 25.00 fps,
 video: FFMpeg MPEG-4, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 48000
 Hz)

When recording I use -oac copy ( means no conversion of
 audio stream)
Then I convert with mencoder and do higher compression of
 video too.

Re: how to use mencoder to record TV program

2008-11-04 Thread Serena Cantor
It works now though it has many programs! Thanks!!!

After running 2 sudo commands given by you, your mencoder command can record. I
don't copy sudo output, because 1st sudo merely says insmod snd-mixer-oss.ko
and snd-pcm-oss.ko and 2nd sudo has no output at all, though I have /dev/dsp
and /dev/mixer after running 2 sudo. I change /dev/dsp1 to /dev/dsp in your
command, and run it. It records, and I can hear TV audio. After about 15
seconds, I press Ctrl+C to end recording and play output.avi. I find that TV
audio is NOT recorded (TV video seems OK). I have to add -vo x11 to mplayer
output.avi to play it. vlc player can't play output.avi, even video is not
shown.

I read manual at www.mplayerhq.hu to find a mencoder option that sets recording
time length so I needn't press Ctrl+C to end recording, but can't find it.

FYI my TV card is made by Lucky Star Image World ConferenceTV, I should use
modprobe bttv card=21, but they say my card is a clone of Flyvideo, and I
find modprobe bttv card=8 works better. The TV audio output of TV card is
connected to Linein of sound card. This is very common in Bt8x8 TV card.

Re: how to use mencoder to record TV program

2008-11-03 Thread Serena Cantor
Thanks! It's not easy to use mencoder. I copy and use your script, mencoder
report error when parsing -tv option. Then I remove channel=$CH from -tv
option, mencoder report Unable to open /dev/dsp and 0 frames successfully
processed, 0 frames droped

It's too hard to use, I'd rather give up.

Re: how to use mencoder to record TV program

2008-11-03 Thread Serena Cantor
The command you gives does not work.
It seems to me that you miss -tv, so I add it, mencoder says sth. wrong with
audio device.
I think I can omit chanlist and channel specification in mencoder command,
because I can use the command below to watch TV:

mplayer -tv driver=v4l:width=640:height=480:outfmt=i420 -vo xv tv://

Maybe mplayer can manage to do its job with defaults. Omitting them will make
things a little easier for me. I'm in China, which use china-bcast in xawtv.

I try a command in page below, it seems to have similiar problem:

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/tv-input.html#tv-examples

Below is output of your command after adding -tv:

 hi,

 I missed the -tv indeed

What about the mencoder commands there from the link
 http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/tv-input.html#tv-examples

do they don't work? I guess no, because otherwise you
 wouldn't be posting

Can you try this command and replace CHANNEL with
 the channel you want to
record? If you miss the channel then I guess the last one
 you've tuned the
 receiver will be captured.

When recording no other application should be running that
 uses your tv card
like xawtv or similar. May be you have tried to watch and
 record at the
same time? If you want to do this you better start mencoder
 to record the
stream and run mplayer output.avi to watch the stream while
 recording.

I changed the v4l to v4l2, because I think the howto is a
 bit outdated. You
can try both if it's not working and if you want. I
 also added the chanlist
and autoaspect option and instead cropping I use scale
 filter.

I hope this will work. Have a look at the output.avi file
 and post output if
there are problems like you did now.

I add snd-sb16 to /etc/modules, it now can detect my card automatically. Thanks!

Hi Serena. I have an SB16 ISA card on the machine
 I'm posting from (FC2),
but it's only set up for one of the distros on the
 machine as a second
soundcard on the Fedora Core 3 install. The other
 distros use an Ensoniq
(ens1371) soundcard. I'll reboot into FC3, and see
 if there is anything
in /etc/modprobe.conf that might help you. If there is
 you could add the
lines to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, which may resolve
 your problem.

I'm not sure how it may work with Etch, as I
 don't have it installed on
  this machine.

  I'll post back later.

  Nigel.

Hi Again. I rebooted into FC3, which has both the Ensoniq,
 and SB16 soundcards
configured. Both cards work fine after the reboot.

The output from cat /proc/asound/cards is below. The only
 problem that I had
when I added the SB16 card to this machine, and then ran
 alsaconf, is that it
insisted on being card0. The Ensoniq card had been card0,
 but after running
alsaconf for adding the SB16, the SB16 was set as card0,
 and the Ensoniq card
became card1. Not a big problem, and I did try to change
 it, but with no
 success,

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [S16]: SB16 - Sound Blaster 16
Sound Blaster 16 at 0x220, irq 5, dma
 15
 1 [AudioPCI ]: ENS1371 - Ensoniq AudioPCI
  Ensoniq AudioPCI ENS1371 at 0x1080,
 irq 11
 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$

Moving on to /etc/modprobe.conf , there are 2 lines that
 alsaconf has set for
the SB16 card, and its worth adding these to your
 /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
file, as it may fix your problem. See below.

 alias eth0 3c59x
 remove snd-ens1371 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store /dev/null
 21
 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-ens1371
 alias usb-controller uhci-hcd

 #alias snd-card-0 snd-ens1371
 #alias snd-card-1 snd-sb16
 #options snd-ens1371 index=0
 #options snd-sb16 index=1
 # --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
 # --- ALSACONF verion 1.0.9rc1 ---
 alias snd-card-0 snd-sb16
 options snd-sb16 isapnp=0
 # --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

The 2 lines that you need to add to the
 /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file are,
 alias snd-card-0 snd-sb16
 options snd-sb16 isapnp=0

As you can see from my /etc/modprobe.conf file above, these
 were created when
I ran Alsaconf for the SB16 soundcard.

As I said. I don't have Etch installed on the machine
 with the SB16 card, so
the suggestion above, may, or may not work.

 Nigel.

Re: how to convert several .flv files to a real media file?

2008-10-24 Thread Serena Cantor
Thanks a lot!

I use the command you offer. There are many issues to be solved. I use mplayer
to play it. I have not installed ffmpeg. Mplayer can't forward seek when
playing it. vlc play only video, not sound.

Besides, mencoder can encode .flv. See its usage page:

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/menc-feat-selecting-codec.html

At the end of the web page above, it has an example how to convert a avi file
to a .flv flash file.

I had the same problem a while ago.
After some googling I ended up with the following solution:

$: mencoder -oac copy -ovc copy -idx -o out.avi in1.flv
  in2.flv
 in3.flv etc...

I used it to join some 12 .flv files into one single .avi
 file of
approx. the same size as all twelve added up. As I
 understood it well,
mencoder cannot output .flv format (but a lot of other
 formats
 indeed).

For me there was no reason to convert the out.avi to
 out.flv, using
ffmpeg, as it only results in poorer quality. Besides that,
 I found
ffmpeg deleting some frames while converting. So I stuck
 with the
.avi file. I use ffplay on the command line to watch the
 .avi video
(ffplay is part of the ffmpeg package):

 $: ffplay -x 640 -y 480 out.avi

If you ensist on having a .flv file, you can use ffmpeg
 like this:

 $: ffmpeg -i out.avi -sameq out.flv

 Greetings, Manon.

Hi Serena. Is the e100 module loaded? Post the ouput of
 lsmod please.

I know that I had some problems with the driver not being
 loaded for my
Realtek 8139 network card, and had to add 8139too to
 /etc/modules.

If the module is not seen in your lsmod, su to root on the
 CLI, and do a.
modprobe e100, then check lsmod again.

If the network card is now showing in lsmod, add it to
 /etc/modules, and when
you reboot, it should be loaded automatically.

 All the best.

Merging translation text with real media file will make distributing it

Do you already have the subtitles in the language of your choice? In
that case, many players will be able to display the subtitles when
playing the movie. Try mplayer with the -sub option.

Unless you plan on watching the film on a standalone hardware player,

you do not really have to encode the subtitles into the film.
If you really want to do that, you can use mencoder (installed as
 part
of mplayer, if you compile from sources)

I have a TV card. I use a audio cable from TV audio out to sound card
line-in.
I often recording TV, so I want to find out sound card performance
during TV recording. Which program can test it?

I have 2 sound cards: one is ISA SB16 (which use sb module), the other
is PCI Cirrus Logic Crystal CS4281 (which use cs4281 module). Which one
is better for audio recording?

I use producer from real.com which use real media format. Sometimes
producer warns :Channel 0 clips moderately. What does that mean?

need help on getting CD-Writer working in etch

2007-12-22 Thread Serena Cantor
I attach a CD-Writer(hdb) after installing etch on hda

According to /usr/share/doc/wodim/README.ATAPI.setup:

If you have just one CD writer in your computer, CD-writing should
work out of the box. There should be a symbolic link /dev/cdrw which
points to your actual CD-Writer's device (e. g. /dev/hdb). If the link
is not present (eg. the system is not using udev/devfs) or if you want
to use a different device as default, you can configure the device in
/etc/wodim.conf:

  CDR_DEVICE=/dev/hdd

Surely it isn't that simple.

If I attach CD-Writer before installing etch, maybe it will be
configured correctly.

During boot, I see CD-Writer detected as hdb, I know it should be
ignored and use scsi-emulation. I just don't know how to do it.

Learning to use new software takes time. Last time I used mencoder and
ffmpeg, they have video/audio synchronization problem, according their
manual.

Now I'm happy with real producer and player.

In my opinion, even better than using the RealPlayer at
debian-multimedia, would be to get a recent mplayer,
ffmpeg and w32codecs from the same place. I have had
mplayer perform better than realplayer on problematic
realvideo files. I am not sure if mplayer was using an
ffmpeg version of the codecs or if it was using the
Windows DDLs and the player itself is simply better.
 But it was definitely better.

 Cheers,

2007-11-27 Thread Serena Cantor
Thanks for your advice!
I have tried and been disappointed by gentoo.
I have used File Runner before. It's not as intuitive as Explorer of
Windows.

To me, any interface that's different from Explorer will make me
uncomfortable.

--- Haines Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 practical.

For a GUI file manager, the one named thumar is often
praised. Midnight Commander (mc) works both text-based and GUI
interface, and I've used FileRunner for years. In none of these cases
do you need a desktop environment.

As for text-based applications, there is clex and MC, but I've been
looking at putting emacs into a file manager mode. Here there seem to
be three choices: a) Norton Commander (nc.el, which uses MC
 commands),
Evening Commander (ec.el, which is less complete), and Sunrise
Commander (sunrise-commander.el, which is based on dired
commands). You can even run these emacs modes from a console, as far
as I know, which for me is a big advantage (independent of the X
 windows system).

I have used Linux for 8 years.
I have not found any suitable file manager(FM).
I use twm. I don't use KDE or GNOME. so don't recommend any FM based on KDE or
GNOME
I still use command line. I will prefer GUI FM so my life can be a little
easier.
I use sarge and etch.

Maybe the Chinese font has Latin characters that have somehow become
the default. I've received email with large line-drawing-style
characters, and I believe those have come from people using a big5
charset. You can force iceweasel/icedove to use a specific font with
something like the following in profile/chrome/userChrome.css:

 treechildren {
 font-family: Nimbus Sans L !important;
 font-size: 14px !important; }

That *should* set the font for everything -- menus, pages, dialogs --
but I'm not positive. Unfortunately, the last I looked Mozilla's
 chrome was essentially undocumented.

how to check TV card?

2007-11-23 Thread Serena Cantor
I have TV card that uses bt848 chip. It's LuckyStar card. I have been using it

system halt. I mean it stop responding to keyboard input. In Windows 98, it
seems to halt more
quickly.

I often use driver for bt878 card. Could that damage my card?

I have changed motherboard and test memory, both seems OK.

My question is how to verify (or test) that the problem really is with the TV
card. If so, I'll
have to buy a new one.

Mostly I modprobe input, hid and mousedev.
Then I use cat /dev/input/mice to test it.

OK. Then what's the question? What error messages are there?

  I remove hotplug,
modprobe input hid and mousedev, all seems OK.
then I use cat /dev/input/mice to test mouse.
The usb mouse does not respond to movement.

Does X work? I've never used cat to test a mouse. I'd use a terrier.

If the latter, then kernel command lines won't do anything. You'll need

Not that I know how to do that.

In fact, in /boot/config-2.6.18-5-amd64 I see that most of the IDE lines
are listed as modules and that they are in
 /lib/modules/2.6.18-5-amd64/kernel/drivers/ide/

Since the initrd setup tells it to load most modules on boot, my guess
is that this is the problem.

 How old is the system?

I've found that linux tends to drop support for old hardware as time
passes. It could also be a hardware problem.

However, before you throw out the drives or the system, I'd suggest, as
a fast and easy test, grabbing the OpenBSD floppy42.fs bootfloppy
(assuming that the old box boots from floppy) and try booting it. If it
completes booting, go to a shell and check dmesg and the logs to look
 for any errors.

If there are errors, then it may be a hardware issue. If there aren't,
it may be a linux kernel driver issue.

Yes you can! Just use fdisk to delete /dev/sda2 and rectreate it with
the same starting point and the new size (that includes the free space)
Then use resize2fs to resize the filesystem to the new size. You might
also want to look into gparted, as it has a very nice gui that is a lot
less intimidating than fdisk. You can even boot off a gparted livecd and
 fix your partition.

Saving data and reformatting /dev/sda2 and reinstalling sarge takes too
  much time.

Even though gparted and the fdisk method have never failed on me, I
usually backup my most critical data when I muck around with the
partitioning. If you have enough space on another disk or on a remote
machine, you might want to consider clonezilla-live take a backup. It
uses partimage and is much faster than cp, tar, rsync or dd.

You can find gparted and clonezilla live cds at
[gparted|clonezilla].sourceforge.net (a multi boot cd offering both is
 also available)

You are fair in being paranoid about the drivers or for any other software
 for that matter. That
is the advantage of Free Software as it allows for you and many other users
 of that software to
delve into the source code and examine it for any security flaws.

However, that is the ideal situation. A regular user ideally cannot examine
 the source code of
every software he/she uses. Thus, the best one can do is to examine the file
 I/O and network I/O
when the specific software is in use. In your case, when the driver is in use
 you can check the
outgoing network connections and file I/O if anything suspicious is going on.

I don't remember of the top of my head the commands to check network and file
 I/O but I have
read them in the OpenBSD afterboot man page.

 http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=afterbootsektion=8

 Good luck,
 Amit

Thanks! I am busy putting mplayer and tvtime to work. I have just installed
vlc, its configuration
is not that easy. I will try later on. I have to sign off the list. Thanks
again!

I believe VLC can do that, although I don't have a card (yet). It will
also do deinterlacing, and since I'm running with the nVidia driver it
 happens in hardware.

why jdk1.3 fail?

2007-10-15 Thread Serena Cantor
On sarge I install jdk1.3 from sun, and get error below when running it:

/usr/local/jdk1.3.1_20/bin/i386/native_threads/java: error while loading shared
libraries:
libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory

On sarge I have installed jdk1.2 and 1.4 from sun and they all work well. I
wonder why jdk1.3
fails.
Which package should I install?

Can you be more clear? If you want to run a command every time you
logout, you can add it to ~/.bash_logout file (Assuming bash is your
login shell). If you are running a command in the background and you
want it to keep running even after you logout, you can use nohup.

My xorg.conf has the following (USB mouse connected to PS/2 port):

 Section InputDevice
 Identifier Configured Mouse
 Driver mouse
 Option CorePointer
 Option Device/dev/input/mice
 EndSection

and lsmod says that I have the module psmouse loaded.

how to set up a Web server thru a wireless router

2007-10-05 Thread Serena Cantor
I have 2 PCs that are connected to wireless router, which is connected to a
cable modem. Now I
want one PC to be a Web server, so people all over the world can access it on

two PCs form a private network, how should I set up?

Or should I connect the Web server directly to cable modem, and use Linux

Internet access to the other PC?

Most routers support port forwarding. If yours does that, then you can
forward all the tcp traffic on ports 80 (http) and 443 (https) to the
machine you want to act as the webserver.

Or should I connect the Web server directly to cable modem, and use Linux
  Masquerading to
 offer
Internet access to the other PC?

I prefer the former option where possible, since it provides an
 additional layer of security.

seeking advice on free dns

2007-10-05 Thread Serena Cantor
I have asked many questions on the list, many are not debian specific, not even
Linux specific,
but I get a lot of help. Thanks

I have just registered a domain name. The registrar provides DNS service, but
asks me to go to
government web sites to apply for approval, because I am in China, and the
government want to
monitor Internet. Then I use google and find free DNS service like afraid.org.
How good is DNS
service provided by free DNS server like afraid.org? Should I use them?
