Cannot connect to a website from debian linux box
Hi, I am facing a problem in connecting to a website from my linux box. I use dialup connection through my ISP or log on to my work(via dialup). The strange thing is that all machines at work are able to access the website (sun or windows), by my linux box cannot. If I boot the machine in windows, then I can connect to the website either thro work or ISP. The website is running https, so I try the following on the sun box: $ ping dcu.fi1.net .. ICMP Communication Administratively Prohibited from gateway vifi-gw.customer.ALTER.NET (157.130.98.254) for icmp from bethsun02 (172.25.200.51) to dcu.fi1.NET (206.150.183.205) .. If I do the same thing, from my linux box, it just does not respond. Now if I run telnet dcu.fi1.net 443 on sun box, it connects. If I run the same thing on linux box, it does not. I am running Linux 2.4.3 (Linux home 2.4.3-686 #1 Mon Apr 16 10:25:24 EST 2001 i686 unknown) - Debian testing/unstable. Any help is greatly appreciated. Netscape color problem ..
Hi, I have a peculiar problem running Netscape 4.75 on my potato box. Netscape comes up with all icons in monochrome. It is really not a color map problem as all the sites/pages are rendered in color !! All of the netscape icons ( like back/forward/home etc ) are all in monochrome. I downloaded 4.73 version also from Debian site, it has the same problem. ( I have Helix gnome also on my box, but the problem is there even if I have an icewm environment). Has anyone faced this problem? Thanks, Shaji

It looks like your chat script is not set up correctly. What program exactly are you using to make your connection? Is it pon, wvdial or a homebrew bash script? Send the list the actual chat and ppp options lists that you are using. Most ISPs are using PAP authentication, but your chat session is sending the username and password. This method went out of favor several years ago. Try making a manual connection using minicom to learn the details of how your ISP authenticates and starts the ppp session. See the PPP HOWTO for details of how to do this. Dwight -- Dwight Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi, I am using Potato, and using the default scripts in /etc/chatscripts/provider and /etc/ppp/peers/provider with appropriate changes. The only addition to /etc/chatscripts/provider is the lastline 1006. The ISP is starpower.net and they say they are not using PAP/CHAP. Also if you observe the chat session, it says entering PPP session, and assigns an IP address. Is there anything which could be going wrong? Re: PPP session not established correctly
Hi, The problem is resolved, thanks to the FAQ page of the modem manufacturer (Actiontec - well they should have specified that in the printed manual). I had to set some serial parameters to the device using setserial, namely spd_vhi skip_test auto_irq autoconfig. Now the problem is that it occasionally gets disconnected. I will try to figure this out. -Thanks, Shaji From: Dwight Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: Dwight Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Shaji N V [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: debian-user@lists.debian.org Subject: Re: PPP session not established correctly Date: Sun, 15 Oct 2000 13:42:31 -0700 (PDT) I suggest deleting the '1006' line from /etc/chatscripts/provider and commenting out 'mtu 1006' from /etc/ppp/peers/provider and then try connecting again. Send the log results to the list. Dwight -- Dwight Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Suggestions for buying a modem
Hi, It turns out that I have a lucent winmodem which will not work on Linux ( I have done around 2 weeks of research on it !!). So I have to buy a new modem. Any one has any suggestions/for a cheap, good modem available in Best Buy/Circuit City etc.? And it should work with Debian 2.2 -Thanks, Shaji _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Problem with Lucent winmodem on debian 2.2
Hi,I am trying to configure Lucent Winmodem on my HP Pavillion (6735) box withDebian 2.2. I have followed the instructions from www.linmodems.org for installing the binary only driver provided by Lucent, but still have problems in loading the driver. The following bits should tell the story.. Can someone help me out? Themodem is working fine with Windows ME. I am not able to understand what exactly the problem is. 1. Why kernel module is not getting loaded. (Lucent's driver is supposed to support shared IRQ - Shouldn't it probe for the IRQ? Windows ME uses IRQ 3) 2. Why setserial complains about "No such device" Thanks in advance,ShajiFrom insmod -f ltmodem--Using /lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/ltmodem.oWarning: kernel-module version mismatch/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/ltmodem.o was compiled for kernel version2.2.12-20while this kernel is version 2.2.17/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/ltmodem.o: init_module: Device or resource busyHint: this error can be caused by incorrect module parameters, includinginvalid IO or IRQ parametersFrom cat /proc/pci-- Communication controller: Lucent (ex-ATT) Microelectronics Unknowndevice(rev 0).
