SCCS question
Does anyone here know of someone sympathetic to free software development who might have access to a machine that runs SCCS? I want to know because of work needing to be done on CSSC, the free equivalent. As you know, a lot of GNU software is useful to Debian users. So, I was hoping someone here might be able to help. Regards Tim
Linking with X
I am getting this link error /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so: undefined reference to `getpwnam_r@@GLIBC_2.0' Does this mean I need an extra library? If so, which one?
Re: debconf problems
Joey Hess It would also help if you can figure out where that copy of base.pm came from -- did you locally install it by accident, via CPAN, or something? You're not the first person to run into this problem. I think /usr/lib/perl5/base.pm is from perl 5.004.04-7 I would tentatively suggest that the new version of debconf be made to depend on perl 5.6.0 to avoid this problem. Regards Tim
X and Netscape key problem
I am having problems with the delete key. I can use an xmodmap to map keycode 22 to 0xff08. Although xterm and emacs cope with this, Netscape does not. Thus I can delete correctly in both xterm and emacs. Has anyone any idea what might be causing this? Is this a known X problem? In /var/log/xdm.log I have an error message sh: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/xkbcomp: No such file or directory Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap I guess this could be the problem. How can I generate the appropriate keymap? Which program is trying to run xkbcomp using the wrong absolute filename?
dpkg bug?
I think I have hit a bug in dpkg. I try to install an older version of xlib6g but I get a failure because xlib6g depends on libxaw6. However, I think only the new version of xlib6g (4.0.2) depends on libxaw6. The old version (3.3.6 from potato) does not depend on libxaw6. (Please can someone with potato verify this.) So, this makes me think that there is a bug because dpkg should realise that the destination version of xlib6g has no requirement and thus should not fail. Below is the output from dpkg just in case I have misread it. I assume I can force the downgrade to succeed with the appropriate force flags but I do not like this solution. I have dpkg version 1.6.15 installed. Any suggestions anyone? Should I contact the maintainer for dpkg to ask for a fixed version? xdm font failure
Okay, I solved the perl problem and managed to configure debconf. I will explain the debconf resolution after I have got X working... Now, I have a problem with xdm not working. It is xdm version 4.0.2 and it fails with the following output: How can I get xdm (or the X server) working? debconf problems
I am having problems configuring debconf. I need debconf because I have upgraded X and need to upgrade xdm as well. xdm is currently not working. Here is the output from dpkg --configure debconf. What can I do to fix this? Output: Setting up debconf (0.9.21) ... debconf problems
Delete the old verson of base.pm that is installed somewhere in the directories listed at the end of perl -V, but is not part of a debian package. It would also help if you can figure out where that copy of base.pm came from -- did you locally install it by accident, via CPAN, or something? You're not the first person to run into this problem. Okay, here are the directories returned by perl -V: @INC: /usr/local/lib/perl/5.6.0 /usr/local/share/perl/5.6.0 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.6.0 /usr/share/perl/5.6.0 /usr/local/lib/site_perl/i386-linux /usr/local/lib/site_perl /usr/lib/perl5/5.6/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/5.6 /usr/lib/perl5/5.005/i386-linux . These are the two base.pm files that I have found out of those directories: /usr/lib/perl5/base.pm /usr/share/perl/5.6.0/base.pm My question is: Which of these should I remove? How can I tell which is not part of a debian package? Is there a command that I should use? As to where it came from, well, I am not sure. I have just been adding and removing debian packages from www.debian.org and so I assume that both files are from packages. What is the next step? Thanks for all the help so far.
Netscape problems
Hello! I installed netscape-base-4_4.76-1.deb and netscape-base-475_4.75-2.deb to try to get the 4.75 Netscape running. However, I have done this and I do not seem to have a netscape executable any more. Are there other packages I need? If so, what are they?
Netscape problems
I am having trouble using the debian website. Could someone use it to tell me where on the debian FTP server I can find the package files (.deb files) for these two packages: libstdc++2.9-glibc2.1 2.91.66-4 libxpm4 Thanks
Netscape
Is anyone using version 4.6 of Netscape? I get a crash when downloading http://www.ishipress.com/chess.htm Do anyone else get that? If so, can you email me with your version of Netscape? Does Netscape 6 have this problem? I am considering upgrading, particularly if crashes have been fixed.
recording problems
I have a Blaster 16 PCI card. The rec command does not seem to be working - could it be that playing works but recording does not? I use the play command to play back the file but all I get is some clicking noises. Does this seem like a familiar problem? I have a 2.2.17 kernel. Regards Tim
Re: Sound testing
Krzys Majewski wrote I use saytime. For example: I tried running saytime but it did not work. Nothing sounding like the time came out of the speaker. cat /bin/bash /dev/audio gives white noise from the speaker so something is working. Is there likely to be problem with my installation of sound? Regards Tim
Re: Sound testing
Chris wrote /dev/sndstat was never meant to be relied upon and is now listed as obsolete in my kernel source (2.4.0-test7). Has it been superceded by something else? If so, what? Tim
Re: Sound testing
I upgraded to a 2.2 kernel and got the sound card working to a limited extent. However, /dev/sndstat is not working. Any suggestions? # cat /dev/sndstat cat: /dev/sndstat: No such device Tim
Sound testing
I am trying to get my Sound Blaster card working. Can anyone suggest a simple test program that I can run to prove that it is working? I seem to have four different possible sockets for the speakers. black, green, red, blue Any idea which of these is the one to use? Regards Tim
Re: Sound testing
Oswald Buddenhagen wrote cat /bin/bash /dev/audio :-)=) this sound really rocks! *lol* What does this sound like? I have no /dev/audio. What do I do? there are usually tiny icons engraved into the plate the sockets stick out. my card uses the black one for speaker output. Yes, I have those icons but I cannot make much sense of them. What does the icon next to your black look like? Regards Tim
Re: Sound testing
Oswald Buddenhagen wrote not good ... try /dev/dsp if you miss this one too, then something is wrong with your setup. then you should have a look at MAKEDEV. I have created audio. Now I get ~ cat /bin/bash /dev/audio /dev/audio: Device not configured. Any ideas? Is it possible that I need something extra configured in my kernel? Regards Tim
List archives
It's broken. The administrators know about it. Is searching the archives likely to be fixed soon? I have problems when I do not select the latest quarter. If not, is this due to lack of time to fix the bugs? If so, would it be possible to volunteer to help fix the bugs? Regards Tim
Re: Sound testing
Michael Merten It has no amplified output for speakers, which is what your black jack is (i believe). I use the green jack with a pair of cheapo amplified speakers Thanks for that. I located the documentation for Blaster 16 PCI and it seems that the green line out is what I need. However, the documentation does not give the default settings for I/O Base and IRQ. I think this is why the device is not configured. Does anyone know the default settings? Failing that, I may have to try to call technical support. Regards Tim
Some questions
What is the support status of slink (Debian 2.1)? Will packages for potato install on slink? Will they work on slink? Searching the list archive gives links to cgi.debian.org which do not work. I wonder whether this is actually a problem in my Netscape browswer. Should I report this problem with the search mechanism to Debian? Regards Tim

Flushing drives
I have noticed that with my new kernel, I no longer get the following when I shut down my machine: GDT: Flushing all host drivers .. Done I use shutdown -h now What is GDT? Is this message important?
Kernel change
Okay - I have solved the xdm problem. I needed to link PS/2 mouse support into the kernel. I found this out by looking at the output of xdm. I have now configured ipchains as I want including running it automatically on reboot. Thanks for the help.
possible pppd bug
Sometimes when I dial into my ISP, there seems to be a problem getting fully connected. Is this a known pppd bug? The symptom is that the dialup seems to be working but one part of the process just hangs. Any ideas on this?
Boot commands
Where is the best place to add commands to be done by root on booting? Somewhere in /etc/rc I guess.
Kernel change
I have just built a new 2.0.36 kernel but, when I boot it, xdm does not work. I switch back to my standard kernel and everything is okay. Am I forgetting to select something related to X or something? Is there a web page detailing standard kernel things? I am looking at /usr/doc/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO-4.html currently.
securing ports
Is it possible to secure the ports on my Debian machine so that other machines on the internet cannot get through? Is there some way to configure pppd to block packets?
List
Is there a general linux discussion list which is active? (Not usenet)
Mail front end
Hello. I am trying to get Ishmail to work. If Phillip Deackes or anyone else with experience with using Ishmail, can help me, I would be grateful. Ishmail seems to require popclient to get mail but on my system popclient is just a symbolic link to fetchmail which is quite a different program. How do I get Ishmail to read mail?
fetchmail problem
Thanks for all the help, people. Your advice about how to fix the clock problem was spot on. Now, another query. If I do a fetchmail and it reports, say, 30 mails, sometimes these mails can be transfered to my spool file in batches. So, I get the first ten and then I have to wait a few minutes for the next ten. I guess that there must be an explicit delay somewhere. Does anyone know where this delay might be? Cordially Tim
Clock problems
I am having problems with the clock losing time after I have shut my system down overnight. Is this to be expected? I thought that there would some way round this. Or is the only way simply to keep the machine running all the time? Cordially Tim
Mail front end
Hi. Does anyone know of a good front end for email? I do not like elm, mutt or XEmacs. I am looking for something like MS Exchange with folder and such. Please email me off-list if you have any ideas. Thanks.
