protecting web directories in apache2

2012-11-27 Thread Zachary Uram
Running Apache2 on Debian testing release. Say I have a directory
http://www.website.org/files/
And I want to let a user download a file:
http://www.website.org/files/example.txt
But I don't want them to be able to browse the directory and see the
other files in there.
So how can I protect the directory?

I cut/pasted some text from a RTF document and when I load the

even added:

problem with awstats

2010-11-11 Thread Zachary Uram
Running Debian testing, installed awstats package and configured it
for use with my apache2 name-based virtual hosts (I have
/var/www/domain1.org, /var/www/domain2.org etc), but when I go to:
http://domain1.org/cgi-bin/awstats.pl or
http://domain2.org/cgi-bin/awstats.pl it gives the error:

Error: SiteDomain parameter not defined in your config/domain file.
You must edit it for using this version of AWStats.

Setup ('/etc/awstats/awstats.conf' file, web server or permissions)
may be wrong.
Check config file, permissions and AWStats documentation (in 'docs' directory).

I *do not* want it checking file /etc/awstats/awstats.conf! I setup
/etc/awstats/awstats.domain.conf for each domain so how can I force it
to use that?

Here is the relevant info from one of my /etc/awstats/awstats.domain.conf:

LogFile=/var/www/oggthebase.org/logs/access.log
SiteDomain=oggthebase.org
HostAliases=www.oggthebase.org
DirData=/var/lib/awstats/oggthebase.org

# ls -l /var/lib/awstats/oggthebase.org
total 32
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6322 Nov 10 23:17 awstats102010.oggthebase.org.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12397 Nov 11 07:17 awstats112010.oggthebase.org.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4853 Nov 11 04:17 dnscachelastupdate.oggthebase.org.hash

# ls -l /var/www/oggthebase.org/logs
total 96
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 66306 Nov 11 08:05 access.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 21056 Nov 11 02:14 error.log

BTW each hour cron runs this script:
/usr/share/doc/awstats/examples/awstats_updateall.pl
-awstatsprog=/usr/lib/cgi-bin/awstats.pl now /dev/null
So it should be updating all of them and when I look at the DataDir
the stats appear to be there.

IIRC, that's the standard way for virtual hosting. You have to specify
the site you want to get the stats for.

But all the awstats documentation I've read (that included in the
Debian package, stuff I found on google) says the other way should
work.

  But if I enter
  http://www.oggthebase.org/cgi-bin/awstats.pl?config=oggthebase.org;; it
  gives the error I mentioned.

Both links are the same :-?

Sorry a mis-paste. I meant I get the error which I mentioned in my
first message if I enter: http://www.oggthebase.org/cgi-bin/awstats.pl
From everything I've read this *should* work but it doesn't. Instead
it reads /etc/awstats/awstats.conf instead of reading
/etc/awstats/awstats.oggthebase.org.conf

/etc/awstats/awstats.conf should only be triggered if someone on the
local LAN entered the localhost name since the relevant entries in
/etc/awstats/awstats.conf are:
LogFile=/var/log/apache2/access.log
SiteDomain=localhost
HostAliases=localhost 127.0.0.1
DirData=/var/lib/awstats

Since I *only* use vhosts for my domains there is no one SiteDomain
for my web server. Thus I setup each of the separate .conf files for
each vhost. I'm not sure if awstats is expecting something else in
this default awstats.conf file or if some other part of the
configuration is in error. From everything I read I setup everything
correctly as detailed in my first message and the stats are generated
and are accessible using the
http://www.oggthebase.org/cgi-bin/awstats.pl?config=oggthebase.org
method but again from everything I've read documented the
http://www.oggthebase.org/cgi-bin/awstats.pl method should work. It
just bothers me that this doesn't work.

Some more info. I looked at my access.log for oggthebase.org.

When I went to http://www.oggthebase.org/cgi-bin/awstats.pl it generated:

[Mon Nov 08 10:56:52 2010] [error] [client 72.0.209.165] File does not
exist: /var/www/oggthebase.org/cgi-bin

So it is going to /var/www/oggthebase.org/cgi-bin

I do *not* want to have a special cgi-bin for each vhost. I only want
it to use the system's /usr/lib/cgi-bin

How can I make this happen?

chroot problem

2010-07-09 Thread Zachary Uram
i upgraded from vista to win7 on my pc which dual boots debian squeeze
so it wiped away the grub2 boot loader from MBR
so i burn copy of Debian Live (also tried Ubuntu 9.04) boot disc:

in order to get it working i tried to mount the root partition :
# mount /dev/sda5 /tmp/mnt

that is fine, but when i run chroot i get weird error:
# chroot /tmp/mnt
# chroot: cannot execute command '/bin/bash' : Exec format error

Both the Debian and Ubuntu Live CDs are x64 architecture, my Debian
squeeze kernel is x64 architecture too
so I reallly don't understand this problem!

I even tried running non-interactive chroot such as:
# chroot /tmp/mnt update-grub

Any idea how I can solve this and run update-grub on my root partition
to restore GRUB?

Weird issue with windows since I installed ATI driver

2009-11-17 Thread Zachary Uram
I installed the Catalyst driver (from manufacturer) for my ATI Radeon
HD 4550 card and it is working (X acceleration works, good resolution,
etc.) but I noticed something weird. Now when I move a window it no
longer shows the window static as it is being moved, it's like it
keeps redrawing it as I move it. So as I drag it it will move it a
little then redraw the window, move it a little, then redraw the
window, etc. Also I noticed in Firefox when I scroll it does the same
thing, instead of keeping the text fixed it redraws the text as the
scroller moves. i really don't like this. It didn't do this in Ubuntu
and I used to same driver. Is this an X thing or a metacity thing or a
gnome thing? How can I fix this? Here is my /etc/X11/xorg.conf

some lenny problems

2009-11-11 Thread Zachary Uram
Ok I just did a fresh install of lenny (so using default gnome
settings, default metacity settings, default X settings) and I have 3
problems.

1) There is no bottom gnome panel only the top panel. I want to add
the bottom panel which shows the minimized windows, the virtual
workspaces, etc.. And I want this to show up in every session.

2) Common packages I could find easily in Ubuntu 9.04 are not in my
package caches (and yes I just ran apt-get update) such as xchat and
epic4. I know Debian is more restrictive but what can I add to my
/etc/apt/sources.list to get these and other apps. Here is my
sources.list:

#
# deb-src cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.1 _Lenny_ - Official
Multi-architecture i386/amd64/source DVD #1 20090413-04:09]/ lenny

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.1 _Lenny_ - Official
Multi-architecture i386/amd64/source DVD #1 20090413-04:09]/ lenny

deb-src http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main

deb http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile lenny/volatile main
deb-src http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile lenny/volatile main

3) Some apps start up with window dimensions that are larger than my
screen height and thus fall off the bottom of the screen! This
happened with Iceweasel. How can I fix this so that *all* apps will be
forced to resize their window dimensions so as to fit within my screen
resolution?

Thanks!

weird networking issue on lenny!

2009-11-11 Thread Zachary Uram
Greetings!

I just did fresh install of lenny, I have a DSL modem and run a static
IP setup so I manually set up my route (DHCP was enabled by default)
by killing the dhclient process and then setting up /etc/resolv.conf
and /etc/network/interfaces and doing /etc/init.d/networking restart
and it went fine, but suddenly after 30 minutes I suddenly lost
internet connectivity and here is what I saw then:

# route -n
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface

As you can see there is no longer a routing table!

# ifconfig

wi-fi security?

2009-08-05 Thread Zachary Uram
Got a new laptop and was wondering about wifi security. I've never
used wifi before. I wanted to go to some of the local coffee shops
that offer free wii but I need to know:

1) How do I setup wifi in Linux?
1) How do I detect and connect to public free network(s)?
2) How do I make my laptop more secure so others on wifi network can't
steal or sniff my packets?

I heard many people using free wifi get heir passwords sniffed, etc.

Running Ubuntu 9.04 and Debian 5.01 triple boot with Vista Home Premium.

Any Linux programs for detecting available wifi signals and connecting
to them and any wifi security apps?

Also another problem is that when at home I want my laptop to be able
to share my DSL connection, right now my desktop is connected directly
(static IP, no PPoE just raw ethernet frames) to the DSL modem and I
was hoping I can keep this setup and find a way to attack my laptop
when I want to use it at home so what hardware would I need and how
should I set it up?

So right now I have:
phone jack UPS DSL modem desktop NIC

I setup the networking manually by editing the appropriate files. I
want the laptop to automatically connect to the wired network at home
when I connect it and to wireless networks also, not sure if this can
be done.

Installing Debian alongside Windows Vista?

Hi,

I have a 500GB disk which has Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium

I assume it is NTFS. Can someone please tell me exactly what I must do
to shrink the Vista install by 50% and install Debian squeeze (64bit
AMD) on the 250GB partition that will be freed. Also what do you
recommend for swap size (it has 4GB ram) and just have 1 big root
partition with everything on it or split 125GB for root / and 125GB
for /home partitions. Also how do I setup GRUB to then dual boot Vista
and Debian? I've only used LILO as my boot manager in the past?

2009-06-22 Thread Zachary Uram
Anyone know how I can get cmucl to be totally removed? Some problem in
the packaging script I guess. I am running Debian squeeze.

ideas for Linux router?

2009-05-06 Thread Zachary Uram
Hello,

I got an awesome deal today on a Linksys wired Etherfast Cable/DSL
router and 4 port switch - $5 USD at our local Goodwill Computer Store.
They get donations and then sell them (they are a non-profit corp. that helps
the disabled). The model number is: BEFSR41 version 3.

What exactly can I do with this in Linux? I have 2 computers and would
like to network them using this.

It came with a 6 foot ethernet cable and a 12V power adapter. Any ideas
and/or pointers on what to do to set this up in Linux would be great.
Right now I have raw ethernet frames being sent to my laptop which is
using static IP so I have nothing in the way:

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface
66.93.172.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 eth0
0.0.0.0 66.93.172.1 0.0.0.0 UG0 00 eth0

My eventual goal is to setup a DMZ network and route my public network
traffic behind that but for the present I just want to get my 2
computers sharing the DSL line using this router I got.

Here is my planned DMZ setup:

PS: The Goodwill store has a 20 port Agilent switch (still wrapped in
plastic in the box) for $20.
Is that also a good deal?
