VMware, and acceleratedX
Has anyone used this combination before? I would like to be able to use full screen, or atleast be able to make the window larger than it currently seems to allow. Also, I'm using vmware to access a windows98 partition on a dual boot system. Right now windows finds all this new hardware, is there a way to make windows see the same hardware it usually does so this doesn't happen? -Aaron Solochek [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: VMware, and acceleratedX
You need to use Hardware Profiles to prevent it from finding hardware etc at every boot. I couldn't get VMWare to work right with AccelX. It never detected the video right. VMWare is rated only with XFree86, AFIAK. I believe accelerated XFree86 servers are supported. RTFM for dual-booting a Win98 raw partition - hint: mutliple HW profiles. -- Karsten M. Segfault with acceleratedX Xsetup
I've had similar problems in the past when I tried to upgrade to potato, but this time all I had was a base slink system. I have the termcap compatibility installed, so thats not causing it. This is a big problem for me, potato isn't work anything to me without X. And I'd rather not use xfree. -Aaron Solochek [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: AcceleratedX
I would like to put debian on my laptop but my chipset is not supported by Xfree in the accelerated mode. Will Accelerated X Laptop Server work with debian?? Yes, it will. Just make sure to install AccelX server ONLY. (Well, may be also fonts, if you like). DO NOT INSTALL their X libraries. Be aware that AccelX is still libc5-based so you will need to install libc5, xlib6, xpm4.7, etc Debian packages (libc5-based compatibility libraries). But look at Metro-X (www.metrolink.com) first. AcceleratedX and xfs
That's nice to know. Maybe I should tell Xi Graphics support about this solution. As a commercial server, I can't say for sure they'd feel bound to honor a standard call. Maybe I've lived too long in an M$ dominated world. All I can say is they didn't suggest it to me when I asked them how to make their product interact properly with XFree86 3.3. I had no previous knowledge of xfs. If I get brave, I'll give it a try...naah, my setup isn't broke so I'd better not try to fix it :-). If so, you need to go into all of your font directories and gunzip the fonts, then ncompress them if you have it, then do the mkfontdir step. AcceleratedX can't do gzipped fonts, but it does understand compressed fonts. If this is your problem, I can forward you a message from Xi Graphics support that gives you the step by step details. But that doesn't matter if you use xfs for the fonts. Just configure xfs, set the FontPath of the X server to tcp/localhost:7100 and you're all set. Then xfs will handle the fonts (gzipped or not) and the X server uses a standard protocol to ask xfs for them. Switching from AcceleratedX to new xserver-svga killed meta.
I just switched to xserver-svga from AcceleratedX, and everything wen't smoothly, except that Meta no longer works right in emacs. I can't say things like M-q and have the right thing happen. I thought uncommenting the /etc/X11/XF86Config line LeftAlt Meta would fix it, but it didn't appear to have any effect. Is there something else I need to do?
