proper format for /etc/networks

whats the proper format for /etc/networks in debian? i've never had to use this file before but it looks like i do now in order to use certain options with snort. theres no manpage on it, i looked at the solaris version of networks and tried to do the file that way but it didn't seem to work

This morning I asked what needs to be in the /etc/networks file for a box doing dialup via ppp and masquerading for a winbox via eth0. I have yet to receive an answer. Maybe this will help. type cat /etc/networks if you have a system somewhat as described above then hit enter
