Use 4MB. Theres a bug in the server. Use the SVGA server. So either use 4MB
or set the option for SW_CURSOR

Subject: AGP S3 Trio 3D 8MB video card

Hi,

just installed this video card (AGP S3 Trio 3D 8MB) and tried to
configure it for the X environment, but I can't find the proper sever
for it.

This is the output from SuperProbe:

First video: Super-VGA
Chipset: S3 (chipset unknown) (Port Probed)
Signature data: e18a1302 (please report)
Memory: 4096 Kbytes
RAMDAC: Generic 8-bit pseudo-color DAC
(with 6-bit wide lookup tables (or in 6-bit mode))

which is strange as it doesn't seem to recognize the card and just sees
4MB instead of 8MB.

Which XServer should I use for it? If this Xfree version doesn't have
support for this cards, which xserver could I safely use until I
upgrade?

The sistem is:

Debian 2.1
Linux 2.2.10
glibc2.1
xfree86 3.3.2.3a-11

Please, Cc: me as I'm only on the digest list (and would like to get the
answer as soon as possible). TIA.

kept my pci S3 Virge 2MB and save the money!

XFree86 didn't even start to support the S3 Trio3D until version
3.3.4, IIRC, and the stable X releases have only spotty support at
best. (I've heard reports of the server refusing to work except at
very specific modelines, but my [PCI] Trio3D refused to work even
then.) You can get either X source or binaries of the X server from
xfree86.org, or upgrade to the current Debian release-in-testing
(frozen/potato, which has XF86 3.3.6); use the XF86_SVGA server.

If you're feeling more adventurous, the latest beta of XFree86
(3.9.18) also supports the Trio3D, and it seems to work better than
just about anything else I've tried (performance beats XF86_FBDev, and
stability/workingness over other things). You can get a snapshot
(source only), again from xfree86.org, but you'll need to build this
yourself (took me about a day on a P100).

what's that SW_CURSOR option and where can it be set?

I'm afraid you're right but...

Well, I'm prob'ly wrong (hence not sending to the mailing list), but I'd say
that you'd use the generic svga server.

somehow right but...

I ran xf86config and chose the SVGA server. Since the card is not
listed, I chose a generic S3 TrioV2 (don't ask me why).

The boot would give me a HUGE (and I mean huge) screen for X, so I went
through XF86Setup:

for every mode with a colour depth of 32bpp, 24bpp, and 16bpp I always
get:

Attempting to start server... (twice)

-X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
...

for every mode with a colour depth of 8bpp I always get that HUGE
screen, which is actually just a part of the screen.

I've tried with modes as high as 1600x1200 and as low as 480x300 (and
some others in between), but the result is always the same.

Now, upgrading to potato's 3.3.6 might be a choice, if the upgrade was
straight forward, but we all know this is not so and many things may get
broken. I went through my small private hell when I upgraded to
glibc2.1 and several other potato's libs and progs. I'm just afraid
that this time might be similar somehow (not being adventorous, I know).

Any thoughts?
