When trying to use gtkam I found the cursor disappeared and I had to either exit X altogether or revert to the console and then go back to X before it would appear again.
After some fiddling I found that the problem was in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, where the mouse device was given as /dev/mouse. This is a symlink to /dev/ttyS1. I changed the entry to /dev/ttyS1 and the problem went away. I thought this might be of interest to anyone who has encountered the same effect.
