I use NFS for Linux and Samba for Windows for more than 15y already. If NFS is too slow use the SAMBA in Linux too. I split my setup of two machines into a server and desktop. I can execute tasks on the server too, start VMs there or whatever - same for the PC. It works very good.

Would you recommend me to use SAMBA for all of that? All data partitions are NTFS and there's no need to set permissions since all data are audio, video, image and document files and the only user is me. At first I thought to use both SAMBA for LINUX-WINDOWS and maybe NFS for LINUX-LINUX but I used NFS long time ago and it was slow as a turtle. Is there another networking service available that runs faster only for LINUX-LINUX or it is better to use SAMBA for everything_ Good nite all

I'd like to have a way to transfer files between the Linux boxes (currently ~this~ desktop, with two users, and a laptop, with only myself). Am I over-thinking the means to xfer files to and fro? Seeing as I'll be on a secure wired LAN and no more than two rooms separating the desktop and laptop, I'd like to do this without having to resort to ssh, ftp, or emailing files to and fro. I'm also having quandaries with other servers (specifically pop3 service offering to the MS and Mac machines) but will address them in another post. Greetings, the t in my apt commands is so from attempting to get the testing version of these packages. I've attempted to install nfs* pkgs from both stable and testing with the same post-install errors. There appears to be a problem connecting to RPC services. I've done the following ~before~ posting to the list: 1. Attempted to install stable version of nfs-user-server. Result: error as before 2. Purged above package and attempted install of nfs-kernel-server. Result: same error 3. Purged all nfs-common, nfs-*-server, and portmap, then attempted fresh install. Result: same error 4. Step 3 repeated but attempting testing versions. Result: same error A bit of a patter developing. I've also disabled portsentry while installing -- thinking that it was interfering in the process. At this point all I can think of is that my ~limited~ ipchains rules are somehow interfering (although they shouldn't as I have unrestricted traffic on the lo interface). Still looking for advice, pointers, fm's, etc. Thanks anyway, C-Cose On 04-05-03, Hanasaki JiJi transmitted the following; % apt-get remove --purge nfs-kernel-server nfs-user-server % apt-get install --reinstall nfs-kernel-server portmap % % dont mix in all that -t stuff.. ya dont need it. if you reply to this, % reply to the list so others can see/help you. % % C-Cose Masters wrote: % Greetings, % % I'm having difficulties installing nfs- (user-server | kernel-server) % through apt. Linux! Linux!
I met some of you at the Linux World conference. Here is a little tough: Linux World Conference It was a pleasure to see so much enthusiasm about an alternative to the current proprietary systems that keep fighting each other and limiting our freedom (http://www.linuxworldexpo.com/). While it seems like the roots for a great open source system is well being taken care of with the many Linux projects, there is not enough going on to take advantage of this awakening to do Wright this time. Lots of talk about compatibility, transportability, multiple platform, etc., but missing the fundamental: no standardization = no functional commonality = no design driven software compiler = back into the agony of the current proprietary systems. I hate to insist, but if we do not have a Functional Thesaurus for functional standardization, leading to a System Design Methodology (SDM) which guarantees integration of the software elements and software/hardware elements, the future of LINUX is compromised. See www.stargate-se.com Forum. The current path will lead to Applications (database, word processing, Internet development and browsers, multimedia, h/w components, peripherals, etc.) which cannot provide the needed standardization for the user. One must understand, first of all, that the application requiring extreme specialization to make it productive is yesterday thinking. The great number of user (99 of every 100 users) cannot afford the specialization. They need to be productive with multiple tools that must allow the integration the resulting data. On the other hand, the creation of the Functional Thesaurus and SDM will lead to the ultimate software development environment. Graphical user interface, like today's Visual C++, is just a small token into the total graphical functional software development tool needed. Join that revolution at the Stargate Forum, discussions and projects. I would be interested in getting some help from you, as well as maybe provide you with support at the design/documentation level. from Humberto W. I have an 486 box that i would like to set up as debian linux and establish a parallel port cable connection with another linux box. Get a Laplink cable, the netstd.deb, netbase.deb packages, and the PLIP-Howto (or mini-Howto). I don't have the Howto handy right now, but I got a plip working pretty quickly once I had all these.
