Re: NEEDED: not quite current buisnesscard and netinst iso images

2013-03-24 Thread Rick Thomas

Hi Richard,

Did you ever get this working for you?

Did you notice the --scan option to jigdo-lite? It might allow you
to use your DVD iso's to avoid downloading a lot of stuff you already
have. I seem to remember that internet bandwidth was a problem for you.

Note: I believe that the powers-that-be have decided that supporting
the businesscard images is not going to be done in the future. The
suggestion is to use netinst instead. It's not much bigger than
businesscard and it allows a fairly complete minimal installation
without requiring network access, which businesscard did not.

Enjoy!

Rick

For outside reasons that project has been pushed into the
background.

I'm also rethinking my goals.
I've been sort of following various threads about Wheezy and
suspect some of my original motivations will evaporate with
the release version. I'll wait for full release and
availability of DVD sets. Suspect better understanding of
preseeding will be what I should have spent my time on.
We'll see. Thanks.

You should be able to issue the following command to generate a
netinst ISO image (after installing the jigdo-file package):
jigdo-lite --noask
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/archive/6.0.5/i386/jigdo-cd/debian-6.0.5-i386-netinst.jigdo

For the business card ISO the command is:
jigdo-lite --noask
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/archive/6.0.5/i386/jigdo-cd/debian-6.0.5-i386-businesscard.jigdo

Thanks for the quick reply, but that's where I started ;
I also followed multiple paths starting at

I suspect someone has been quietly doing some needed

more used to it.

As a relative newbie, how? One of my motivations is learning
guts of Debian. As a retiree I have time available.

But a custom mix can not really meet my current project goal

it does work :)).

I'll try it after lunch. I had been avoiding jigdo as I
understood its use was being discouraged - there had been a
discussion on some list or USENET group I'd been reading.
[It apparently was NOT this list. I just did a Google search
of the archives] Also statements on related sites painted a
discouraging picture:

Currently, the system works, but is not yet very
comfortable to use because the download manager application
is not finished.

This software is now in maintenance mode, development has
stopped. Unfortunately, this means that various parts (in
particular the GUI download tool) will remain unfinished.

Also, at the moment only the shell script jigdo-lite can be
used for downloading. Unfortunately, the jigdo GUI download
manager shown below never reached a usable state.

That is the archive. You want the current images.

  http://www.debian.org/releases/

Select stable takes you to:

  http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/

Selecting installation information takes you to:

  http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/debian-installer/

And on that page are ISOs of images. I recommend the netinst amd64
image. It is a direct link. Just download it.

http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/6.0.7/amd64/iso-cd/debian-6.0.7-amd64-netinst.iso

 # jigdo-lite debian-6.0.5-i386-netinst.gz

should download and build an appropriate ISO image (I just tested it,

Using jigdo also works well. I like using it with a networked template.
For CD#1:

  # apt-get install jigdo-file

  $ mkdir jigdo-stuff
  $ cd jigdo-stuff
  $ jigdo-lite --noask
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/6.0.6/amd64/jigdo-cd/debian-6.0.6-amd64-CD-1.jigdo
  ...lots of output...

  $ ls -ldog debian-6.0.6-amd64-CD-1.iso
  -rw-rw-r-- 1 678428672 Jan 8 13:56 debian-6.0.6-amd64-CD-1.iso

For the netinst image same thing but:

  jigdo-lite --noask
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/6.0.7/amd64/jigdo-cd/debian-6.0.7-amd64-netinst.jigdo

I'll try it after lunch. I had been avoiding jigdo as I understood
 its use was being discouraged

It is still very much supported. But the Internet has no delete
button and there was much discussion of early problems that were
eventually fixed. How old are those postings? I would definitely
recommend jigdo when using a fast local mirror. When used on the
mirror machine itself it is extremely fast! :-)

You can use jigdo-lite to build any of the images that are needed even
though the mirror does not keep full ISOs around. Because of the
caching of smaller individual deb files it is more resilient to
stopping and starting.

A large DVD ISO it is only useful if you have the whole entire file.
Change one deb and the whole entire file is needed to be downloaded
again. Whereas with jigdo only the one deb needs to be downloaded
again. An incremental update is much faster using jigdo.

Currently, the system works, but is not yet very comfortable to use
because the download manager application is not finished.
 http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/

Who needs a graphical download manager? Simply use the command line
as shown above.

You have been railing against having a network but you require a
mouse? That seems very inconsistent.

This software is now in maintenance mode, development has
stopped. Unfortunately, this means that various parts (in particular
the GUI download tool) will remain unfinished.
 http://atterer.org/jigdo/

Likewise. There is no itch to scratch. It works. Software maturity
is a good thing not a bad thing.

Also, at the moment only the shell script jigdo-lite can be used
for downloading. Unfortunately, the jigdo GUI download manager shown
below never reached a usable state.
 http://atterer.org/jigdo/

GUI, GUI, GUI. Writing a novel with the mouse is like using a bar of
soap on a window. The keyboard is much more efficient. Take that
mouse and throw it away! :-)

Most of the time the problem is just getting *any* working example.
After having a working example it can be modified into other use
cases. That is a pretty basic premise for anything.

The above is a perfect example of this. An example was given. It
wasn't a perfect match but close enough to deduce the correct match
for you. The pieces were provided among the responses. All it needed
was basic assembly. I don't want 6.0.7, I want 6.0.5. Okay. Then
use 6.0.5 then. I don't want amd64, I want i386. Okay. Then use
i386. That isn't rocket surgery.

With volunteer help there is almost never going to be a perfect match
handed out all of the time. People providing help is great but you
must be able to do some of this work yourself. What goes around
comes around. You get what you give. Be a help to society not a
burden.
