Maybe you should start from the beginning and check if modules for
your sound card are loaded.

$ lsmod | grep snd
$ cat /proc/asound/cards

If they aren't, maybe installing alsa-utils and running alsaconf as
root could help.

No volume control elements and/or devices found after upgrade to etch

2006-02-11 Thread Luc Saffre
Hello,

I am running Debian on a Dell Latitude 110L notebook. Recently I
upgraded from sarge to etch. Now my sound system is dead. On each start
of either KDE or Gnome I get a message box No volume control elements
and/or devices found.
The same box comes also when I invoke the menu command Applications /
Sound  Video / Volume Control.

I found the following thread :
http://groups.google.com/group/linux.debian.user/browse_frm/thread/fff05336bb96e850/7ea739ca71c5b55e?lnk=stq=etch+%22no+volume+control+elements%22rnum=1#7ea739ca71c5b55e

Like Chinook I also have a kernel 2.6.12-1-386.
Unlike Chinook my message does not specify to run gst-register.
I had gst-register already installed.
I tried gst-register-0.8 as root. Lots of messages about Adding
plugin, ending with:

  Rebuilding user_registry (/root/.gstreamer-0.8/registry.xml) ...
  Loaded 135 plugins with 276 features.

Oops, that wasn't probably necessary to be run as root. I run it again
as luc.
Similar output.

Reboot the notebook. But the problem persits.

Please help me! What can I do next?

Luc
