My ISP recently had some problems with their dialtone provider which meant
I often had to make several attempts before connecting. Like you, I
didn't want to wait for PON to start over. You have two choices:
1.) You can remove the 'persist' option from /etc/ppp.options_out (bo) or
from

PON will have already stopped because of the carrier detect
falure, but will come back in little while with a different PID.
Try removing the persist flag, if it's enabled anywhere. You won't
get automatic redials, though.

Solution B: Edit the PON scripts
My telephone has an answering service which beeps if I have messages when
I pick up the receiver. This is the same phone I use for the computer.
If I forget to check the line, or if there is a time out disconnect, and
there is a message(hence a beep beep beep) the scripts setoff by PON will
not
