Between an A2000 and a 386SX25, both running linux, I get about 19k.

1998-01-28 Thread Gerald Wann
Hi -

I have an 486 box that i would like to set up as debian linux and
establish a parallel port cable connection with another linux box.

Could someone suggest the best way to accomplish this please?

Thanks

Jerry

I have an 486 box that i would like to set up as debian linux and
establish a parallel port cable connection with another linux box.

Get a Laplink cable, the netstd.deb, netbase.deb packages, and the
PLIP-Howto (or mini-Howto). I don't have the Howto handy right now, but I
got a plip working pretty quickly once I had all these.

The Howto will tell you to recompile the kernel with plip as a module, to
some ifconfig's and some route's and presto.

1) Read /usr/doc/HOWTO/mini/PLIP.gz

2) Compile your kernel with PLIP support:

CONFIG_PLIP=y

Hi,

By the way what is the data transfer rate of such connection?

Sorry to jump into your discussion,
Sasha.

 Hi,

By the way what is the data transfer rate of such connection?

Sorry to jump into your discussion,

Actually ... the PLIP_howto says that you should enjoy rates of 40 kB per
second, but with my link from my Dos box to my Linux machine I only see
rates from say 88 BYTES per second to at most 1 kB per second (if the moon
is in proper alignment with Mars and my cable).

Does anyone know how to fix this?

 Hi,

By the way what is the data transfer rate of such connection?

460kbit/sec i.e. about 40+ kbytes per sec

see you ;)
