Camiel:

I have a K6 350 in a ASUS P5 MB with 128MB RAM and an ATI 2MB video
card (I dont'have video card info, can look it up if need be.)
and Adaptec 2840 scsi controller.

I had irregular freezes that I could only recover from by reset
until I killed xdm. I use startx to crank up X now, and don't have
those freezes. Never did figure out what was going on.

I leave my machine on all the time, so startx once in a while is no
bother.

You might try killing xdm.

It is hard to diagnose a problem without knowing anything about
circumstances. Is it happening at random or while you run a particular
program? Check the logs after the restart, and ~/.xsession-errors file
to see what can be potentially wrong.

don't know, but you still can telnet your box and run halt or kill xyz
or you can use the sysrq key to sync/unmount/reboot. the sysrq key is
available as a kernel option (2.2.x).

I can't help you with a solution to the freeze problem. However, if
your X-windows freezes, you can probably shut down X-windows only, by
pressing ctrl-alt-backspace simultaneously. In this way you
don't have to reboot your system with the reset button.

Although, since the keyboard is locked, this isn't actually an option.

I had a similar problem recently (Bug#47988) I was resetting my computer a
few times a day - but it went away, and I don't know why...
