Ok, I had edit headers on, so that's why it didn't work... This is just a side effect of losing the functionality of being able to edit your headers in the composing editor. If you set edit_headers, then you don't get the early prompts but go straight into your editor screen where you can fill in the headers using whatever tools are available in your editor. When you exit the composer, you go back to mutt's screen and here you can type, say, t to change to To: field. NOW you get mutt's alias/tab facility.
