Is the partition mounted with the noexec flag?

aha, I had mounted my 'work' partition viz

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/work/Fortran$ grep work /etc/fstab
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/work ext2rw,user,noauto 0 2
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/work/Fortran$ mount|grep work
/dev/hdb1 on /mnt/work type ext2 (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,user=mkb)

by appending 'exec' to the mount options it does not indeed work,
thanks!

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/work/Fortran$ grep work /etc/fstab;mount|grep
work; ./simple.out
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/work ext2rw,user,noauto,exec 0 2
/dev/hdb1 on /mnt/work type ext2 (rw,nosuid,nodev,user=mkb)

gfortran Permission denied

2008-05-07 Thread michael
I've just installed, without error, gfortran on my AMD64

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/work/Fortran$ dpkg -l|grep gfortran
ii gfortran 4.1.1-15
The GNU Fortran 95 compiler
ii gfortran-4.1 4.1.1-21
The GNU Fortran 95 compiler
ii libgfortran1 4.1.1-21
Runtime library for GNU Fortran applications
ii libgfortran1-dev 4.1.1-21
GNU Fortran library development
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/work/Fortran$ uname -a
Linux amd64 2.6.18-6-amd64 #1 SMP Thu Apr 24 03:57:46 UTC 2008 x86_64
GNU/Linux

and it seems to compile a simple code okay:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/work/Fortran$ cat simple.f90 ; gfortran -o simple.out
simple.f90
program michael
implicit none
write(*,*) 'hi'
write(*,*) index('hi','!')
end program michael

but it won't run!

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/work/Fortran$ ./simple.out
-bash: ./simple.out: Permission denied
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/work/Fortran$ ls -lt ./simple.out
-rwxr-xr-x 1 mkb mkb 10039 May 7 23:41 ./simple.out*

but it's totally unclear to me what the problem is

All ideas welcomed, M

Works for me on x86-32 Sid. Maybe the /Permission denied/ is on a
library instead of the main routine?

Use gfortran 4.3 (the latest version). It is much better than 4.1. But that
is not the cause of your problem.

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/work/Fortran$ ./simple.out
 -bash: ./simple.out: Permission denied
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/work/Fortran$ ls -lt ./simple.out
 -rwxr-xr-x 1 mkb mkb 10039 May 7 23:41 ./simple.out*

Are you able to run any other executable (say from a C program) or any other
script (say a bash script) from that directory?

but it's totally unclear to me what the problem is

 All ideas welcomed, M

This is not a gfortran problem per se. The problem is somewhere else.
