I can sign on via a terminal session, so it isn't a userid or
 password problem.

Something similar happened to me many a moon ago, and it was due to the
fact that I had inadvertently turned on Allow to control the pointer
using the keyboard in

System - Preferences - Keyboard - Mouse Keys

(Gnome)

I turned off what I'd accidentally turned on (you may be wondering how I
fortuitously turned on such a functionality, buried as it is deep in a
configuration menu, but I managed to do it with a series of not very
felicitous keyboard combinations while editing a file or playing Bzflag
or something.)

I should have added that to explore this and other possibilities you'd
log on to the terminal, get root, run 'service gdm3 stop', then log out
of root and run 'startx' as a regular user, thus entering gnome and
bypassing the greeter entirely.

only GDM3 greeter screen works

Hello,

Apparently I have mucked something up. The GDM3 greeter screen (i.e. the
screen that displays your name, and solicits the password) functions,
but it will not sign me on.

I can sign on via a terminal session, so it isn't a userid or
password problem.

I've run dpkg-reconfigure gdm3, but that didn't help.

I've run /etc/init.d/gdm3 restart, and that didn't help either.

Any ideas?
