Most probably it's due to the following bug
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=452454

If so, then the fix is easy - add yourself to the scanner group,
re-login and try running hp-toolbox again. Worked for me with an hp
officejet 5510 all-in-one.

I had the same problem.  IIRC, I got over it by deleting .hplip.conf
from my home directory.  I /might/ have deleted ~/.hplip too, I don't
remember.

The safest method would be to rename the file and directory and then
start hp-toolbox.  If your printer is set up with the hp: device,
sounds as though it is, because it was working through hp-toolbox
before, it should be found.
