There is no contest between MS and Linux. As Linus stated some time a go, the

 Just had to ask ;-)

This GUI admin tool has:

2. Network Configurator.(adding virtual hosts and/or dialup to an ISP.)
3. Package Management. (sorta like a graphical dselect.)
4. Apache Configurator. (add virtual web hostings, etc.)
5. File System Configurator. (mount/unmounts filesystems and NFS.)
6. Runlevel Editor. (Edit the runlevels of the system.)

Hell, it's so easy to dialup to an ISP using this thing, we could then
elimanate maybe 20% of the topic here in debian-user mailing list about
how to connect to an ISP. :)

I think, that's one strength of Redhat compared to Debian.

Webmin and Linuxconf has the same idea. Maybe we could tinker with it and
start from there.

Any Ideas?

You are absolutely true. My first Linux was SLS back in 1993. After
a period of 2.5 years of not using Linux due to limited hard disc
space I started with the SuSE distribution. Some month later I tried
Red Hat 4.2 and Debian 1.2 and finally stuck with Debian. It was the
only system that had both the advantages of both a good package system
and a fine-control on configuring the packages. For example, compare
the SuSE tool Yast which configure ALL the package with a huge
/etc/rc.config file and the package-related /usr/sbin/packageconfig
idea found in Debian.

If you aren't a newbie then you'd already have a good idea of what the
best would be.

If you are a newbie then the question is irrelevant. Just get a Linux, any
Linux and learn it. You won't find too much that you can't unlearn later

I use Debian of course (other list addresses snipped). I moved to Debian

Re: Which Linux distribution???

1998-02-05 Thread sawitt

Debian Linux, of course, is the best distribution :). But I really do
believe that or I wouldn't be using it.

To determine whether your hardware is supported or not you should
consult the HOWTOs. A HOWTO index is located at
http://www.linux.org/help/howto.html. Look through there until you
see the Hardware Compatibility HOWTO. Coincidentally I'm resarching
this issue myself for a RD networking lab I'm building at work that
will use PCs/Debian as hosts. As far as I know, I don't think there
is anything on your list of hardware that will give you any trouble.
I don't think your video card is supported by the current release of
XFree86 (for X windows), but it is supported (pretty well to all
reports) by the S.u.S.E. project -- visit http://www.suse.com.

Of course any problems/questions you encounter along the way will be
answered promptly by this list's membership. Another great reason to
 choose Debian.

 Good luck!
