I am running the nouveau driver now for the past couple of hours. I
can say that it works for a regular use. I tried glxinfo but it
segfaulted. The output is shown below.

You were absolutely right. I had installed that one to play with KMS,
but 2.6.32.4 solved all the problems...

After reading NEWS.Debian.gz for xserver-xorg-video-radeon I followed
the suggestion to turn off KMS by editing
/etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf. I could then switch back and forth
between X and VT without problems.
