[libreoffice-design] TDF logo proposals

Hi Rizal,
as I told at Telegram channel I send my thoughts per email.

First: I'm happy that you take care of this. It was one of my long time
projects to get a TDF logo.

Second: Per se I really like the idea of a roof in the logo. A roof is
(for me) a very strong symbol for TDF: a pars pro toto [1]. The TDF is
the house of LibO and DLP, it is its protection. Perhaps you can work
with this figure.

Third: There was a discussion in 2016 [2] that we (especially the
Marketing team) need a squared or nearly squared logo. When we have the
logo with a written text of "The Document Fountation" it will getting
very stretched and perhaps unreadable.
So the logo should work with the text and without the text. It works
like a blazon (coat of arms). It should be recognizable as "this *is* TDF".

These are my 2cts.
I hope you can understand my thoughts. And I hope to see many more very
good suggestions on this topic from you.

I don't work with Reddit so I need the channel name.
And I thought it lasts for 24 hour, so no time frame?
At least I think it will get too big and too much info. But we will se.

But this part is odg (and not svg). So everybody, who has Vegur
insatlled, can change it or play with it.

The banner itself should link to the Reddit AMA meets Libo 6.1. Or to a
website, where we provide all the infos (@Mike S.?).

[libreoffice-design] Cover for GS 6.0 - New proposal

after working with the old theme for our documentation covers I make 
another proposal. I "steal" Doğa Deniz's idea from a poster and make a 
new cover design for our Getting Started 6.x [1].

LibreOffice better.


I'm graphic designer (speciallity webdesign) and I've got a suggestion 
to share, based on the nice work done by K-J.


It would be good if you share your thoughts and suggestions. I have 
learned many here in project by the others' comments, thoughts, 
suggestions and improvements. And getting advices from a professional is 
much more worth to listen.

though has the typical problem of simple rectangular gradients: It looks
star-ish for some reason (optical illusion?). Probalby it is better to
gaussian-blur it or so.

Heiko provided the new series 6 for branding [1]. Thanks for that.

I played a little bit with the image [2] and the banner [3]. It isn't 
final but only a proposal to work with if you are interested.


IMO we should be consequent in our design and leave the "5" branding.

Of course. And especially the marketing team uses this or that or an 
other font for their stuff. Mostly without providing or even telling the 
font.
If we have a second default font (e.g Liberation Mono or something else) 
for our marketing things we would get some continuity.
Or we make a list of fonts which should/could be used in official LibO 
flyers, banners, annual reports etc. Otherwise we will get some day an 
official Comic Sans flyer.

called it: "Libellula" and so we get to "LibO".


It is an animal which we can find all over the world (except Antarctica).

Thanks for the link.
Some first thoughts:
- Text "TheDocumentFoundation" should not be green as TDF does not only 
respresent LibO (=DLP).

- The text will be unreadable when the symbol is very small.
- The question is: Is this document logo a logo of LibO or of TDF? DLP 
uses a kind of other (stilistic) logo. So the used logo is affiliated 
with LibO.


What do you think about a minimalistic logo like "TDF"? Maybe with 
different letter sizes?

I try to come here with some proposals.

[libreoffice-design] Why are not all dialog boxes are resizable?

Hi all,
starting with a discussion on German ml [1] about different sizes on the 
dialog box of "Export as PDF" in different UIs (bug 95178 [2]) Thorsten 
recognizes that 275 dialog boxes aren't resizable, others are resizable.


Is there any reason why they aren't resizable or can they be switched to 
resizable by default?

You are right: It was a mistake to not ask the design team but it was 
necessary because of lack of time. But this is an other problem.
Let me say: the design team for VI wasn't able to organize it in that 
fast time. Kendy was overswamped by UX and other work and we have no 
other design team lead for VI (as we don't have anyone who really makes VI).


We should do it better organized for V6.


If we’re to keep an obsolete UI paradign such as the splash screen, it
should at least be minimal, as Mirek suggested years ago [1]

What shall I see here?


When we talk about the splash screen, we should not only talk about 
design but also about marketing:
To have the "5" is a big marketing strategy against others who are in 
4.x. To symbolize that is very important. We should show it on every 
edge. And so I'm glad that not only designers but Charles and Italo as 
marketing team have a look at this thread.



I will vote for a configuration switch as mentioned above in the thread.

TDF-pad seems to be really better than G.

Some thoughts for workflow:
- How can someone find the link to discussions? Wiki, Redmine? So: how

- Is it possible to make a sign in with an tdf-account or an other 
account (I know there is no need for an account):
-- The problem is that no one can see who was making notes, if all do it 
without account (It's a fact of discipline).

- Is it possible to archieve it?

symbol to show the relationship they have to it without adhering to the 
above guidelines. Examples of derivative logos are logos of the 
individual LibreOffice modules

Another thing:
I have a big problem with Impress 4.4.1 under WIN 8.1 (and 4.5.0 alpha 
under WIN10 Preview) but have no time to look deeper:
The text and the footer at the first page won't be displayed when I do 
the presentation. Copying the first slide I will see the content at the 
second page.

It is reproducebale with the existing conference presentations.

I had thought we would make it really inclusive (i.e. inviting everyone
to vote); is it not desirable?


I don't think that it is a good and community friendly choice to vote at 
one of the weekly hangouts. I'm e.g. not able to attend.

We should vote on ml as we did many times before.
I think a little group of Design and Marketing people should have a veto 
against a template. This can happen on PM with the rule Jan mentioned:

for each template that arrives, either a general
consensus on the given template, or it is not included for 4.4.0 (and
can be re-evaluated for later inclusion)..
If we get too many proposals the Design and Marketing team can make a 
selection to vote on.


The last big vote (4.0 branding) was (on my opinion) a real desaster: A 
hurry-up voting and discussing at Google+, stopped by BoD, after that 
voted at google docs (). The winning object broke the defined and 
branding rules (which is up to now not solved in a good way).



4) deadline and scheduling.


Needs to happen in time for RC2 (beginning of January), so that there
is still chance to do changes for RC3.  Of course, if any good
templates arrive later, they'll be still appreciated, and can be
included in later versions (4.4.x).


I don't think that we have to hurry so. We shouldn't do it. If you start 
the contest mid/end week 51 (if you have discussed and fixed the rules 
in that time), promotion should happen in week 51/52 between all the 
christmas mails and songs and so on. The RC2 is in week 2, the RC3 is 
two weeks later. For voting you need about one week. There would be no 
time for discussions, improvements, especially it's holiday time and 
some people are on vacation starting December 20th.


So:
Start the contest before christmas with 4 weeks open to get proposals. 
Promote it before christmas and after holiday (January 5th) again.

Deadline: January 18th
One week for discussion and opportunities to improve the proposals.
Maybe two days for the defined group to veto.
Vote (on ml) for one week.

So we have a result earliest January 27th and we get in 4.4.1.

Sorry for the late response.
I found some things:
+ It' a very simple (=danish) design
+ Using the silouette
0 Maybe change the silouette to a single green line without green area [1]
0 Do everybody know where Aarhus is? Maybe there should be some hint to 
Denmark
0 I personally would like to have the original logo with the The 
Document Foundation

0 I don't know if the orange 2015 fits with the green coloured silouette
0 The right font does not seem to be Vegur, but something similar. Or 
it has been drawn and squat in the width. The 2015 is another font, so 
you have three fonts.

- There is no timestamp (22th to 25th september)
- The 2015 doesn't line to Conference. And Conference is a bit too 
near by the green line.

- The LibO logo is too close to the left border
- The white bottom border is much bigger than the others.

Putting some things together I made an own proposal based on the logo of 
2011 to 2014:

I think the problem is: I have no rights for the whole project

I think that for the most people who will do design work, there will be 
 in future no need for a wiki account because the whole workflow will 
be in Redmine. Only a few (the design admins) have to work on the main 
descriptions for our work. And these will get smaller when we use 
Redmine (and Redmine has a Wiki, too, if we need one).
For me, as I don't do UX but only marketing material, Bugzilla isn't 
necessary for my design work. And I think, if the design process will 
work in Redmine the punchs for Buzilla will get smaller. AFAIK our 
infrastructure team works completely in Redmine.


When is a Bugzilla account necessary in design workflow?
Only when I have to discuss with the developer. So only for UX as a 
(big) part of our design team. VI works almost without Bugzilla.
As long as we do our design work process, there is no need for a 
Bugzilla account.

So how many Designers, who will get new in here, need a Bugzilla account?

And so a new member of the Design team first needs a ml-account and a 
Redmine-account.


As I said above: Every argument against Redmine is an argument against a 
forum and Google+ etc. So if you think Redmine isn't our workflow 
program because you need a new account, the others aren't too. And we 
have to stay with what we have. But I see many advantages to give the 
TDF-Redmine a try for design workflow.



*) As Dennis mentioned the infrastructure team provides to make an own 
Open-ID or something similar to have only one account for all things for 
the TDF.

- up to now you need an external Open ID which I don't want to use
- what about archiving and finding?
- How to get a message that something new is in there as long as I'm not 
directly involved?


IMHO we will get the biggiest advance by a redmine project. There we can 
ticketing, sheduling, archiving, linking, assigning, observing, etc.

I requested a design project in redmine as supposed [1] [2].

Ok, I missed the point that you talk about design bugs, I thought you

I won't call it lead but projectée.
There should be some profiles for a projectée:
- He/She should have contributed time and intellectual design work for 6 
months. The best will be, he/she is a member (as it is told in our 
statutes § 10 Board of Trustees).
- The person should have led more than one design project for LibO as 
described by the Whiteboards
- He/She should be voted, not elected: There will always be only one 
person for one position to be voted.
- It won't be an official position (so the projectée can't do 
dictatorial work) but he/she have a voice to stop things which will go 
in wrong direction.



I personally don't think that we need leads because we have no 
contributors to be led. We have some merited Design members who guide 
us. I for my part will say thanks to Mirek and Astron who do a very good 
job here.


As you said we need structural positions and I think you (and Astron) 
should go on to work on it. I can put in my personal 2 Cents as border 
worker between Marketing and Design. Maybe we find an instrument to work 
on it.
Wasn't there an idea to make a Design meeting in South Tirol (with 
Italo) some times ago (two or three years)?

I like this concept.
But IMHO it is a little bit colorless.
I think the 2014 is too near by the B so I would align it to the flag.
There is no date stamp.

A red cross isn't Swiss and won't be recognized as this but as Red Cross 
Movement [1]

in the logo is not a good one. (Safwan's logos use two, Eleonora's seem
to use four, yours [KJ's] uses three).
