[Design-team] Introduction for Thorsten Panknin (thopan)

Hi,

just subscribed to this list after joining the Matrix chat.

I'm from Germany, so not an English native speaker.

I'm new to the Fedora community and currently figuring out what I could 
contribute to. Besides text-related work like translations and editing 
German texts, I'm currently getting back into design.


I completed a two-year occupational retraining as an online media 
designer 20 years ago (yes, really), but never worked in the field due 
to health issues. I am still, or rather again, interested in basic 
vector stuff with Inkscape, especially since the multi-page feature got 
introduced. I contributed a few vector works to the Openclipart project 
eons ago, which are still available and stem from my time with the 
German Inkscape forum back then. I'm not really a raster design person, 
I actually don't like pixel work much.


I just installed Penpot locally (thanks to the great Podman article by 
linuxgl) and would like to get into grid-based design work, too, 
say a 12-column design grid. I love it when stuff is aligned to other 
stuff and to the page. And I like basic typography. I'm not a great, 
creative designer I'd say, meaning that my stuff is mostly 
informational and a bit neutral, maybe using some nice font and color, 
but not creative as "make a funny page about cats, it should be cute an 
colourful". Not sure if you get what I mean.


I sometimes translate rules-light roleplaying games to German and 
mostly provide a PDF as well, but mostly as ashcan versions without 
much image design, because I lack the routine. If you're interested in 
seeing some of my PDFs, please ask. I'd rather noch put links to my 
stuff in here unsolicited. I'm currently applying a 12-column grid to 
my stuff so I get some rhythm to my designs. Looking forward to 
Penpot's release on Jan 31st when new layout features should be 
released, including a Flex-based layout. Hoping that will make 
multi-column text frames possible.


I sometimes suffer from Imposter syndrome and would love honest 
feedback, because mostly I work alone and that can be hard.

My name is Judah, but you can call me Velocity if you'd like.
I've recently got into Fedora, but I've been with Linux for 5-6 years (I moved 
from Manjaro to Silverblue).
Some of my interests are (obviously) computing, music & composition, 
programming, and design.
I'm really excited about Fedora's mission and would love to give back to the 
project. So I decided that I was going to find a way.
Since I really like design, I've decided that the design team is probably the 
place for me.
I'm great at branding and marketing, but I'm lacking in my artistic design 
skills.

Hello all,
My name is Ryan Gorley. I'm working out of Utah in the United
  States. For the past 11 years I've run a small creative agency
  called Freehive.
  A few years ago we transitioned to using free and open-source
  software exclusively. I show up at conferences a couple times a
  year to talk about that and encourage others to try kicking the
  proprietary software habit. Prior to starting Freehive I worked
  several years in various design and marketing roles. Lately I do
  mostly art direction, design, animation, and (some) front-end
  development. I did most of the creative work on the GNOME 40 release video,
  which I imagine some of the people here may have seen because of
  the Fedora 34 connection. I also volunteer for the Inkscape
  project where I started their outreach team.

I'm not sure what volume of creative work I can contribute with
  my current workload and other volunteer commitments, but I'd like
  to pick up creative tasks when I am able. I'd also happily provide
  constructive feedback and encouragement to those here who are new
  to design or new to using free software. That said, I have much to
  learn too, so I hope to likewise benefit from the expertise of
  this community along the way.

Hi!

My name is Fred and am excited to contribute to Fedora in anyway I can. I've 
been using Fedora since my college days. Design has been my interest for 25 or 
so years. I started out as a dev, as much as I enjoyed that, decided UX/UI was 
more rewarding. So that has been my career for the last 15-20 years. Most of my 
experience in that time has been in creating desktop/web/mobile ui, usability 
testing, and branding. Currently I am a university instructor. Teaching classes 
in user experience, graphic design, and front-end web development.

My name is Kristina Millona, a 26-year-old girl, originally from Albania but 
currently living in Serbia. 
I am interested to apply in this internship for two reasons: 

- firstly, because I am a supporter of open source software and have been 
contributing to some Wikimedia projects, also have attended some meetings of 
Fedora community in Albania. Therefore I would like to get to know better 
Fedora and become more internalized with its work. 

- secondly, through my experience working as project assistant for an 
international organisation in Belgrade, I assume I am skilled at project 
management and communication tasks (designing newsletters, media visuals for 
different calls etc).

[Design-team] Introduction (Outreachy Applicant)

[Smera Goel]

Hi! My name is Smera, and I’m from India. I have been dabbling in art for
as long as I can remember. While I prefer the traditional mediums like
watercolours, sketching, etc., I have also started learning about digital
design, doing mainly illustrations, typography and graphic design.
In my free time, I like to paint! I have an art page on Instagram where I
post my work.

I currently study Computer Science and Design and up till now I have
studied drawing, visualisation, visual design and communication, design
perspectives and processes and currently I am studying human-computer
interaction!

I do not have any prior experience contributing to open source. I did learn
a bit about the Fedora open source community last year (I was really
intrigued by the Happiness Packets Project)

I’m really excited about contributing to this community. I always had the
misconception that open source contributing was always tech related, but
I’m really glad that there’s a design part too!

Hi all!  My name is Danny Lee and I’m a new volunteer, whose also new to 
Fedora’s Silverblue.  In fact, that’s how I came around to reading up on the 
awesome work you guys do and also, the awesome amount of work to be done, so I 
thought I’d come and lend a hand.  

My background is varied and I have an visual arts degree, but I’m actually more 
of a technical/handy person.  I have some experience doing real estate 
marketing flyers and the like.  I also did some printing for events so I have 
experience (good and bad) with setting up files for printing (color matching, 
resolution, edge bleed requirements) and let me tell you, some of them did NOT 
come out good (cmyk vs rgb – it’s part of the learning curve)  

Otherwise, I’m always ready to lend a hand and brainstorm with people, patient 
with criticism and open-minded to suggestions.   

I’m interested in helping out with whatever I can.   I’m looking forward to 
being part of the team.

I actually came by here after Benson Muite suggested from the marketing list.

Hi everyone!

My name is Grace and I'm from the Boston area, and I'm interested in
working with the Fedora design team community.

I am currently pursuing a BFA in Graphic Design, and so I have a strong
background in fine arts, print design, branding design, and some web
design, as well as some experience with back-end programming. I am most
interested in working on UI/UX/web design projects.

I have little experience with contributing to open source projects, so I
may need some guidance/correction, but I am very excited to begin.

college in Brno. I've joined your team for 2 week placement (in RedHat) and

[Design-team] Introduction

Hello everyone,
I'm Varun, a Computer Science Undergrad working around with Linux for 1.5+ 
years. So far I've used CentOS, RHEL 7, Ubuntu, Manjaro, Fedora, Zorin, Mint, 
and Kali. Currently, I'm using Fedora 25. I joined the Fedora Project as I'm 
enthusiastic about open source and I wish to contribute my efforts to this 
community.

I'm a blogger. I create and write articles for https://www.technotification.com 
and been doing so since Dec '13. I have intermediate experience with System 
Administration on Red Hat based systems, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.

I've created the account at FAS and I look forward to contributing to Fedora 
QA, content writing, and design.

[Design-team] Introduction :)

[Chhavi Shrivastava]

Hello :)

I am Chhavi, a pre-final Bachelor's Design student from IIT Guwahati,
India. I am newcomer, both to FOSS and writing an introduction to send out
to a mailing list of designers (very intimidating, both).

I have courses ranging from elements of design, graphic design, animation,
to UX and HCI. I mostly dabble with projects involving UX :
- I designed the UX of an e-governance portal for our state with a team of
developers
- An extensive app for a global insurance firm during my summer intern.
Not showing off but I might have designed t-shirts and posters for
advertising too. :)

I documented it on my portfolio website
 which
I built this summers (HTML/CSS and twitter bootstrap framework to make it
look good on mobile as well). It would be kind of you to check it out. I
made a profile  on github too, though
presently it has only my attempts to learn React and a side project
that is my current love (a
collection of interviews about girls in IITs, since girl boy ratio is 1:10
here and there are a lot of stereotypes in India about it).

All in all, this has made me realize how design has the power to impact
communities and how it's more about learning from people and their
contexts, than books.

I stumbled upon Fedora Design page while exploring Outreachy. I would like
to start helping out with what I can do, and learn from the community (the
word is "contributing", so I have learned by lurking on IRC channels). I
have read through Mizmo's blog about Fedora Hubs, and the links her blog
took me to. I would be happy to help with any part of the design process
that is going on.

Phew. That would be all. I apologize for the length, nowhere did they
mention rules about this so I took the benefit of doubt. :)

[Design-team] Introduction - Elio Qoshi

[Elio Qoshi]

Hello there!

Elio here, 21 years old open designer, grown up in Germany, but currently based 
in Tirana, Albania. I'm pursuing my Bachelor at the University of Arts in 
Tirana for Multimedia, but spend my time mostly within open source projects. 
I'm board member of Open Labs Hackerspace [1], a non profit in Tirana devoted 
to promote FLOSS and open source. I'm also a Representative at Mozilla [2] 
where I mostly am involved with design and lead community efforts regarding 
everything design.
To make a living, I work as a freelance designer and author, mostly for 
SitePoint [3] where I lead the SitePoint Ambassadors volunteer program as a 
Community Manager (with inspirations from Fedora Ambassadors, I must admit).

I have been contributing to Fedora mostly locally in the last year, doing 
promotional materials and images for our events at Open Labs, organized by Jona 
Azizaj, fellow Fedora Ambassador in Albania. Although I still need Adobe 
Illustrator and Photoshop in my daily life, I am in the early steps of getting 
into GIMP and InkScape in order to disattach myself from proprietary software 
even more. I also speak about Open Source Design at many events, where I 
emphasize the importance of bringing designers and developers closer together, 
having a better and more open work ethic and using open formats and licenses. I 
pride myself thereof to be part of the Open Source Design organization [4] with 
which I recently gave 2 talks about at FOSDEM 2016 [5].

I write about Design, Mozilla, and Open Labs mostly on my blog [6] and post 
some design snippets on my Dribbble from time to time [7].

I'd be happy to contribute with some of my time to Fedora, as I love the 
feeling of belonging in an open source community, and Fedora is one of them 
which stays true to its ideals.Although there might be some struggles until I 
fully switch from Adobe Illustrator to InkScape, please don't hesitate to 
assign design tasks to me to have a go at.

We don't get involved with the icons or desktop design. We do design the 
default wallpaper though. If you're interested kn desktop design, I think the 
workstation working group is the place to be involved.

[Design-team] Introduction from Matt Allen

[Matt Allen]

Hello all,

Just dropping a quick email to say hello to the team and to see what's going on 
and if there is anything I can help with. Would be nice to become part of the 
team.

Main skills are in product and interactive design, examples of which can be 
found on my website http://itsmattallen.co.uk.

If there is anything anyone needs a hand with at the moment or if there is 
stuff in the pipeline coming up let me know. I have checked out the design 
tasks list but was unsure what's been done and what hasn't as some stuff that 
I've seen on the wiki finished is still in the list as unassigned so wasn't 
sure how it all works, so just thought I'd drop you all a line.

Based in the UK so will try and pop into the IRC one evening this week.

[Design-team] Introduction

Hello everyone! My name is Nick and I'm here to help out in any way
possible. I primarily have not that much Linux experience, but have a lot
of experience with video production and would like to help out in any way I
can. Please let me know anything it is I need to learn and some tasks that
would help out. My goal is to help with the design team while I learn to
program and then hopefully one day move over to the OS development team.

Hey all,
I'm a student studying Computer Information Technology (CIT) and Graphic
Design at University. I've learned the Adobe products pretty well
(notably Photoshop and Illustrator) for class but would like to be just
as familiar with the FLOSS equivalents. I've also done some web design
(just hand coded HTML/CSS) and interested in getting involved! So yea, I
guess I have to go though this in order to join the group. Hope to start
working on some cool design projects soon!

Architecture student with such a long history of using Fedora! 

Part of the process of joining the team involves claiming a ticket. I
would be more than happy to help you pick one out; depending on your
interests and experience I think some tickets might be better than
others. Do you have any specific design interests (web design, icons,
wallpaper / artwork, cd art, brochures, poster, etc.) or is it all good?

Uhm, I prefer to work on vector drawings and I have a bit more
experiences with logos, banners and also prints in general.
It would be really useful your help, it's not very clear to me how does
the system work.

 Our normal process for joining the team is that we ask new recruits to
 take on a minor ticket in our tracking system as sort of
 practical/applied introduction to how the Fedora community works. You
 end up making connections and learning the Fedora infrastructure through
 that which powers you to taking on bigger projects.

 I don't know if the design ticket has been filed yet, but the Fedora
 infrastructure team (#fedora-admin on irc.freenode.net) yesterday was
 talking about needing a Fedora skin for a stickynotes web app they're
 looking to deploy. A test instance of it is available at:

 We'd want, at a minimum, for the design/template to match our newer
 Fedora infrastructure templates such as for Fedora packages (I did the
 skin for this one):

My name is Alex or Foolishfox, my most notable work was the icon for Nuvola
Player.
I'm new to the fedora design sphere(came from ubuntu) so I'm a bit lost
with this mailing list, could some point me to the list of open tickets.
also i heard there some something about a cloud background? could someone
feel me in on that as well.
Sorry about being so vague, ive been reading the list but haven't had time

and she used ur wallpaper on her desktop. The fedora logo should be placed 
with a litte bit more distance from the top.
So as u can see in the screencast the panel hides a little bit of the logo.

[Design-team] Introduction

Greetings, Design Team.

My name is Phil. I'm quite new to fedora, but I've tried some Distros
so far and Fedora seems to be the right one for me.

My Experience: I've gotten used to Gimp and am currently working on
getting my way around Inkscape. I would love to learn more about
working at/with wallpapers and/or other artwork.

Looking through the Trac Tickets, I would be interested in working on
#209, so I wondered whether it is still recent, whether someone else
is working on it or whether it is even needed?

Hello, Design Team,

My name's Sarah. I'm rather new to fedora but have used Linux for 14
years. I met Mo (hi Mo!) earlier this month at FudCon Blacksburg. She
taught me some awesome Inkscape tips and got me really interested in
the interaction/usability process.

Experience: I know my way around Inkscape and gimp and have created
everything from basic data graphs and buttons to T-shirt designs that
combine photographs and vector elements. I'm also good at taking
written requirements/heavy technical documentation, breaking the
content down into language that is accessible to beginners, and then
creating graphics, choosing imagery and writing new content that can
be used for tutorials, presentations, websites, etc. I also know
CSS(3), HTML(5), and a little javascript.

I'd love to learn more/help out with the interface/interaction process
as well as continue to expand my graphics skills.  I've checked out
the open tickets and see some that nobody owns, but I'd also be
completely open to someone grabbing me to help them on their task.

[Design-team] Introduction to Mailing List

Design Team,

Hello. My name is Ryan. The reason that I want to help contribute 
artwork to the Fedora Project is because I like artwork (computer 
themes, wallpapers, etc.) I like to make computer wallpapers in both 
professional programs and programs like Paint.NET (Pinta in Linux). I 
like making wallpapers more than actual themes because I don't like CSS. 
I do know a little about CSS and XML, but not a lot. I think it is too 
confusing. I hope to contribute computer wallpapers to this mailing 
list, hoping that they will be seen by the administrator for this list. 
I have read and understand the terms and conditions listed in the 
guidelines section of the artwork contributor page. If you read this 
email and accept me as a contributor, I will spend a lot of time 
perfecting the wallpapers I make. I have also seen past Fedora release 
wallpapers, so I have an understanding of what they should look like.

I have worked with both Ubuntu and Linux Mint, and have contributed 
wallpapers in both of those areas. Now, I want to move on to actually 
contributing them to the operating system, not optionally downloadable 
Online. I will have a good time creating these wallpapers and desktop 
backgrounds.

dual-credit class, where we have computers and learn at our own pace
