CRAP. I apologize for wasting your time. I am only a few hours new to this

You can close this one out. The lame BIOS-based sound option was OFF, so

I have the same problem trying to connect to a Samba Share running on a
fresh feisty Xubuntu install.
What I did:
1. Fresh install of Xubuntu on server
2. Set up a SMB Share via Shared Folders
3. Add users via smbpasswd
4. Attempt to open the shared folder on either of two other laptops
