I also have this problem in 9.10 with Brasero 2.28.2.
I inserted a blank CD-R into my drive, right-clicked on an ubuntu iso
image, and clicked write to disc. The Brasero - Burning CD dialog
then appears, and hangs at Preparing to write with the progress bar
bouncing back and forth.

I second this. I came across this bug report because I got the same
error message, and couldn't figure out what icon it was talking about.
I'm a long time Ubuntu/linux user (command line). Though I havn't used
gnome or kde in 3 year.
Your average user would get really confused at that message.

I upgraded my install of 9.04 CrashBang to 9.10, and was unable to
unlock the gdmsetup ui. After reading this thread, I ran gdmsetup W/O
sudo, got an authentication gui, after which I was able to unlock Login

I redirected gdm's output to a logfile in /etc/init/gdm.conf (since it
wasn't logging anything anywhere when it failed), this is what I get

Ahh sorry about the noise then, I assumed it worked because I didn't get

I just tried your solution in #11 and had fairly good success. I hammered my
test machine with over twenty re-starts to get four failures. When I found
the unresponsive panels I tried using the #11 method. I had good results 2 out

was taken from the clip board, and the button open was pressed.
then Totem stops responding for several minutes.

Another way to trigger this crash:
1. Select any username
2. Hit cancel
3. Select any username
- gdm-simple-server segfaults and another xserver is started on the next
available vt (vt8 in my case) along with gdm-simple-slave, because the old
xserver is still running on vt7 (showing the login

I have flagged down Daniel Chen to take another look at this report,
however it is quite low on his priority list and he probably has not
looked at it yet. I'll see if I can get someone else to at least mark

System beep broken in Karmic despite heroic efforts to fix it

Binary package hint: brasero
Tried to burn a 4GB mkv to a data disc DVD; brasero showed a dialog
saying that the files on the generated disc might be corrupt but I can
play the mkv in totem from the DVD though... FWIW; when I was starting
to burn the files it did show a
