real culprit seems to be the transparency of the panel. The panel with
the wnck-applet needs to have both auto-hide and transparency enabled
for the memory

No, using gksu is a deprecated method for a long time, instead programs
are now run as a normal user, and get admin rights using PolicyKit. In
Maverick, this is for example how updates-manager works.

I forgot to update the status, the bug is still there.
Changing the port fixed it for that session as it does enabling and disabling
the account, but the problem appeared again after a restart of Evolution.

In maverick I'm getting the same behavior. And changing the fstab entry
to /dev/sdx it's not really a fix, because you lose the advantages of
using UUID info for identifying partitions instead.

Until Maverick, the build always worked. With Maverick, the build works in a
local pbuilder but fails due to xvfb and metacity (apparently) on Launchpad.
That is how I concluded that it was probably related to this bug.
