Here are the logs. The hard drive (ACER) was working at the moment, but
the flash drive and the mp3 player were not:

Not precisely...I made the command, plugged the device in, and the operation
was done before I could get the device plugged in. It lasted about 1/2 a
second. I did not get a udisk dump log, but I got this:
brandon@Theophage:~$ udisk --dump
No command 'udisk' found, did you mean:

running it as udisks --dump got this though:

This is a problem with gnome + metacity + UNR (I don't know whether it
also happens without UNR). I believe that it is specific to some key
combinations. The only key combination that I am aware of that is
problematic is the one I indicated in the bug report. It might be a
problem for some others,
In addition to synaptic, I also saw this problem in nautilus. If I
opened nautilus by clicking on one of the folders displayed by netbook-
launcher, I would see the empty space underneath the window. Maximizing
with the title-bar button was not enough to cover up the empty space.
Only clicking on
For me, the call to setxkbmap was required.
I'm not sure whether both calls to gconftool-2 were required. I will try
to remember to try this again later.

Oops ... no ... setxkbmap is not required, but both calls to gconftool-2
_are_ required. With only the one that Luca recommends, the workaround
does not achieve the desired effect.

I experimented a little more and discovered that, no, setxkbmap is not
required. The two calls to gconftool-2 are enough to enable the desired
shortcut.
