I'm reopening this as I think this problem has persisted ever since. It
has for me at least. On my Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) install the login
background and the desktop background are both clearly banded.

Christof - you might be right, but how do we find out? And if it's ugly
then it's ugly - the reason is a bit of a side issue. I can't find any
GUI indication of what my color depth is, but I seem to remember it
being 24 - does that sound right?

Ubuntu 7.04 and Kino 0.9.2 both use /dev/dv1394/0 which means that this
bug can be closed - so that's what I'm doing. It works fine for me with
my DV Camera capturing over firewire so I guess it works generally. If

I get several options and the top one is Openoffice. This might be something I
carried with me in my setting. How do I reset all file associations to default?
then I'll see if the problem is still there.

'initial reboot' is the first time I fire it up, _after_ the
instalation. This being a dapper install that it the first boot after I
take the CD out.
The version was a post flight 3 daily build. I'm pretty sure it was

As I wrote Synaptic finds a package named gamin - 0.1.7-2ubuntu1.
And I could only give a screen shot if I reinstalled the whole thing. So
I can't help you there. But it is above, and repeated below:

I am using gnome 2.10 as kept up to date by ubuntu. If I left click 'Places
4.9 GB Volume' (the USB volume in question) it opens in nautilus. If I do the
same but right click - again it opens in
() failed
messages.
This is a brand new install on my old Compaq EvoN150, which runs great
on dapper.
