Display doesn't switch back to primary when secondary monitor is
I can confirm now that this has nothing to do with the gnome settings. I
rebooted into recovery, then rebooted normally without changing
anything; and everything worked fine. Any idea where I should look now
to try to isolate the cause?

Is this reproducible?
Yes. I am able to reproduce this every time.
If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
I suppose it would be helpful if you have a laptop and an external display.
Here are the steps:
i) Configure the display to run on the external monitor only, and
does i is you configuring the display in your user session or of the login
screen?
I configured the display in the user session after logging in. The next time I
boot, if the second (external) display is not connected,
the login screen does not show up at all. The laptop display remains powered

You do have a point there. But I believe this affects the display as a
whole and is not specific to the banner. I don't know much about how
this works. If I understand correctly, the user configuration files
would not be read at all until I login right? Is it possible that the

To add to that, the problem is not just when you use the keybinding.
Even clicking on the menu button causes the crash. If it helps, the only
change I've made to the default install is to enable compositing.
