Thank you. This fixed the immediate problem of no response from the
software and no request for me to enter passwords. I assume this was
a change in the default settings between 6.10 and 7.10, since things
worked as I expected in 6.10.

Choose "connect to server..." from the "file" menu of a File Browser window. I
have access to both ftp and ssh servers (I maintain the ssh server). Attempts
to connect to both failed silently. I can access both using the terminal.
