I have noticed the same problem. I can connect to the share using
Nautilus and it works fine. It's the desktop icon that fails. Also, if

thats strange. i took a screenshot when running from the live cd (of
ubuntu 8.10). it took a screenshot, and it dod not have the .png at
the end.
to replicate:
1. open up something
2. press alt+print screen to take a screenshot of the current window
3. the Name box will be empty. enter a name
after i read your first response, i took a screenshot of gmail in
mozilla firefox, and the name box was completely empty. so then,
while i was typing you that last reply, i had to refer back to the
screen where you take a screenshot, so i pressed alt+prntscrn again,

what the hell? i thought this was supposed to be fixed in intrepid!
one of the things that gnome was bragging about their 2.24 release is that they

in the beta, ekiga 2.0.12 is bundled, which has an extremely old and

ekiga 3 was released along with gnome 2.24, and why wasnt it included
with everything else, seeing as intrepid has the latest version of
gnome?
anyway, i just downloaded the beta, and
look, i dont know what those gnome developers are smoking down there,
but i want some. just look at my attached screenshot. nobody WANTS their
icons to overlap like that, okay? thats just disgusting! your computer
should be automatically organized neatly so that you can focus and find

...and, when i insert a dvd, some flash drives, and an sd card, they
should all NOT be in the exact same place on the screen! x_x

ok, that was clarifying.
anyway, i think that a message saying the user must relogin is still
unacceptable. the problem is not that the error message doesnt contain
helpful information. the problem is that ERRORS ARE BAD. we should not
get an error in the first place. it is inconvenient and
this bug was not present in 7.10 and is therefore a regression. i do not
think that you should have to relogin/restart the computer in order to
start setting up shares, that is way too inconvenient, and you didnt
have to do that in gutsy. instead, how about automatically restarting
samba after
look i dont really care how but i just want the gnome dudes to remake
the way desktop icons are placed on the desktop, and soon (like no later
than gnome 2.26). really obvious bugs like these give linux a bad name.

also, no, i did not restart my session, and i was never told anywhere
that i had to to get it working. therefore, i still think something can
be changed here. i think that after installing samba, it should either
give u that u need 2 restart ur
gksu nautilus
but, i still agree that, if you try to mess with a file that u dont have
priveleges 4, it should say something like, This action requires root
athority or something like that, and then maybe a details thingy that
says what kind of file operation it is (i.e. move /blah/thingy.foo to
