I can confirm this bug, it appears with both Ubuntu Classic (no
effects) and Ubuntu Classic so this doesn't seem to be a compiz vs.
metacity problem.
Compiz was the cause of this bug at natty, so I had to disable effects
back then.

I confirm the workaround presented by Seb: I disabled photographs in the
message preview and had no more 'Formatting message' deadlocks (Edit -
Preferences - Mail Preferences - Headers - Show the photograph of
sender in the message preview).

thank you for your answer. following your advice I deleted all files
from the iPod (by using Gtkpod) and now manage the iPod with Rhythmobox
only. I can dragdrop files to the iPod and they save when

I experienced this behaviour today (2009-01-19) on Ubuntu 8.10:
everything worked for me after the dist-upgrade some time ago.
But, today I accidentally disabled the 'dbus' service within the
services-admin tool. The X server was restarted automatically and I was
not able to login anymore. The
